Legends of Wrestlemania roster is, well, legendary photo

When we talk about wrestling games here at Destructoid, we generally get a "wrestling is stupid" or "wrestling used to be good and now it sucks" response.

Fair enough, but we think what you actually mean is that you haven't watched wrestling since the 80s or early 90s and you don't recognize the wrestlers in the games. Or, you're uncomfortable with your sexuality and seeing guys in tights makes you feel ... wrong.

Whatever the reason, THQ's upcoming arcade-y fighter Legends of Wrestlemania has a roster that just might catch your eye. Truly, all of the legends are here. The Ultimate Warrior, Hulk Hogan, Mr. Perfect, Ric Flair, Andre the Giant, The Rock, Arn Anderson, Jake "The Snake" Roberts ... this goes on. A NeoGAF user pieced together a roster of over 40 superstars, which you can see after the jump.

Come on, provided the gameplay isn't completely terrifying, this is kind of cool. Right?

ACtually for us hardcore wrestling fans we are disappointed with the Addition of Kamala and Yokozuna. Two of the legends that stole the show at Wrestlemania 3 were not included, that being Ricky The Dragon Steamboat and Randy Savage. You'd think that they would be in the game. Their match was bigger than Hogan and Andres.

I'm sure I'll rent/possibly own this game, however I will shake my fist with anger that I can't play as Steamboat or Savage.
Guess I'll have to continue my domination with the Million Dollar Man.

I never would have expected the Warrior on the front page, glaring at me like that. I love Dtoid.

It kinda sucks to look at this list and think of how many of these dudes are dead.

I grew up on wrestling and got into it again during the NWO years, then the steve austin, rock years, but in the last years. I stopped watching it. I've never really been into wrestling video games, but you know what? This lineup is so amazing. I just might buy this game, just to have a wrestling video game that has every famous wrestler ever.

Randy Savage could always be added later in DLC.

You have me in a difficult position d-toid. I want to say so badly "Wrestling is stupid", but you've preempted my attack. And I would love to add that it's not as good as it was back in the 80's and early 90's, but you've spoiled that for me as well.
I'll only buy it if they add a feature that lets the computer do all the work while I sit with my controller and press buttons pretending to play. Then I could fake play a game where fake people fake fight, fakedly.

Yeah, where's the Macho Man? Or Hillbilly Jim?

Though...with the exception of those two glaring omissions, I might pick this one up on the nostalgia factor alone. I remember getting completely psyched up when noon would roll around on a Saturday, 'cause that's when cartoons would stop and WWF would start. And how my cousin got in trouble for dropping an elbow on his brother from the top of his bedpost, nearly giving him serious head trauma...

Memories.

Does anyone know if it will be based on the Smackdown vs. Raw engine from '09, or? I didn't mind the mechanics on the demo...could make a decent game for this one right?

The reason you don't see Mick Foley on the roster is because of his jumping ship to TNA. A few other people they should have put in this game include
IRS
Hillbilly Jim
Owen Hart
Chris Benoit
Demolition
Dino Bravo
Eddie Guererro
Harley Race
Nasty Boys
Tito Santana

I mean those guys deserve some love. But then again, the roster is pretty solid, even though WE STILL WANT MACHO AND THE DRAGON

"but we think what you actually mean is that you haven't watched wrestling since the 80s or early 90s and you don't recognize the wrestlers in the games"

Outside of the campy classic wrestlers of the 80's and early 90's, the majority of the "big name" wrestlers of the mid-to-late 90's are active and still wrestling as part of ECW/Raw/Smackdown (of course the dead wrestlers don't count).

Hell, 5 of the wrestlers in that list are still around (though I'm not sure if I should count Hacksaw Jim Duggan's appearance a few weeks ago on Raw).

Repo Man, Doink, Papa Shango, umm...Giant Gonzalez.

I actually Googled "dumbest wrestlers" to find some more, but I don't care enough to follow through with it.

Mick Foley isn't in it because he works for TNA now, and WWE isn't going to put their competition in their own games.

It would be nice to see Owen Hart and Eddie Guerrero in this one, but looking at the full list, I think they already made their "dead wrestler quota". Which is astonishing, cause none of these guys would even be that old, if they were all alive.

@ Omega-

After the last UFC PPV I watched, the channel was looping PPV commercials and I saw Mick on one for a TNA pay-per-view. So I'm going to go ahead and guess that he and Vince aren't seeing eye to eye.

Im SO looking forward to this game! I've reverted back into a kid again hearing all of those names. And yes the lack of 'Macho Man' Randy Savage and Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat does aggrivate me quite a bit (see: WrestleMania III), but the game itself looks like its a perfect hybrid of the two best eras of wrestling ever.

But now I'll be able to recreate some epic matches from the past; Bret Hart vs Steve Austin, Hulk Hogan vs Andre The Giant, HBK vs Bret Hart, etc.

Plus I'll be able to finally get to see a few dream matches; The Rock vs Ultimate Warrior & Undertaker vs Andre The Giant.

This game would be more exciting if the roster was full of guys who hadn't appeared in a wrestling game since the NES/SNES days. But they've been putting a lot of these guys in the Smackdown games for years now.

You could actually play as Andre The Giant in WWF No Mercy on the N64.

I really have to go with kwaselow. The omission of Mick Foley will prevent me from picking this up. No one gave more of his heart and soul to the organization. You send Cactus Jack packing, he's taking my viewership with him. It's a shame that Vince destroyed ECW, sent off The Dudley Boyz, Foley and Paul Heyman. The inclusion of all in this game would have made this a must buy for me.

It's criminal that Macho Man isn't in this game. He was one of the greatest of all time.

Ricky Steamboat would've been an alright addition too.

Serious lack of tag teams too. They used to be great in WWE, even though they suck now. Demolition should've been in there. Strike Force would've been a nice addition too. Hopefully DLC will release more characters.

I consider myself a wrestling fan, more so during the 80's and 90's...
This game looks cool, but I know it's going to play like shit.
If only THQ would bring back the control style Aki/Asmik perfected!
Man, No Mercy was so much damn fun, even my non-wrestling friends would play it!
