Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword looks incredible on PC photo

PC? Yeah, PC emulation. Those naughty kids using the Dolphin emulator to play Wii games are now enjoying The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword in all its high-resolution glory, running at 1080p. Yes, there are emulation bugs, but users have reported beating the game using the emulator without crashes.

You'll see the screenshots in our gallery below. They're Beautiful. If the stills are this good, I really want to see this in motion.

Should you have the proper rig and want to try, you may want to review some of the settings and specs covered by other emulator users.

First of all, why the hell are you advertising pirated software for a game that isn't even out yet and encouraging people to use it.

Secondly, all the images in the gallery aren't even HD.. They're horribly low quality.

@Starblinky - There's a button to view the images in full resolution... They're 1080...

And Dolphin can be used by anyone with a computer, including people who didn't pirate. I'll be trying this with my copy of the game.

This looks amazing and would most likely run on Wii U hardware without much effort, which is why Nintendo will never make it happen.

I'm so tempted to try this. If only the setup wouldn't be such a pain in the ass. Can I even hookup a sensor bar to a PC? How does that work? Should I buy a PC-compatible one?

"First of all, why the hell are you advertising pirated software for a game that isn't even out yet and encouraging people to use it."

The software isn't -necessarily- pirated, as some legitimate copies of the game are out there. I also don't see anywhere where the staff said people should pirate the game to emulate it. If you rip your own ISO, you aren't doing anything wrong at all.

I have been playing this on the Dolphin Emulator-15 hours in- Looks great and plays wonderfully (Using a classic wiimote + motion plus addon).

Those interested, should google "Dolphin Emulator" and check out the forums- they can help get you set up or answer any questions you might have. With that said, NO ONE will help you pirate the game. The Dolphin Community is very Anti-Piracy. Buy the game, buy a compatible DVD-ROM drive (If you already do not have one) that can read/rip Wii Games- put in your Wii game of choice, and enjoy it on the emulator in 1080p.

What you will need:
Bluetooth (Integrated or a USB adapter)
Wii-mote (Some games CAN use xbox 360 controllers but for Skyward Sword- you cannot.)

Motion plus (Or Wiimote motion plus) for games that need it (Such as Skyward sword)

Sensor Bar.

That's it.

The latest version of Dolphin does have some slight issues playing the game- completely playable, but at times may show "banding" on textures. But, the previous build of Dolphin (7719m)runs the games nearly (if not) perfectly.

No ones talking about stealing the game, You can play it right off the disk on your PC. It shouldn't matter what you play it on as long as you bought it.

@Ronin4life the Dolphin community is very ANTI-PIRACY. IF you even mention of the forums that you are planning on pirating games- no one will help you during the time it takes to ban you.

The correct way to use the emulator is to have a compatible DVD-ROM drive that can read wii games- you can then read the copy of the game you PURCHASED.

If you are wondering how people are playing this already (Such as myself)Skyward Sword has released in a lot of European countries- and Americans such as myself, who didn't want to wait for the 11/22 street date, imported the game LEGALLY.

@killias It's really easy to pair your wiimote to you pc via a bluetooth adapter (or notebook if it has it built-in). The sensor bar for wii doesn't actually do anything, it just reflects the IR back to the wiimote so the wiimote knows where its pointing. It only plugs into the wii for power. If you remember, back when wii came out people were using weird shit like candles and tinfoil to make DIY sensor bars.

@Killias @PwnTang is correct. You can use two candles about a foot apart to act as a sensor bar. I didn't believe it until I saw it! Although, you can always just pick up a wireless sensor bar at Walmart/Best Buy/ Gamestop for $14.99 (don't forget the batteries!)

The problem with things like this is it requires a pretty damn powerful PC to do and a lot of fanagling and even then you still run into performance issues, not really worth doing unless you REALLY REALLY need 1080p. Ultimately for me, it boils down to performance, and when I play it on Wii it will play perfectly and I know tha.

That being said, this looks pretty impressive, and it'd be great if the Wii U can do something like this natively.

so basically sell your low def wii and just buy a pc and emulate wii games, cause they are far better on a pc than the actual system they are made for.

thats pretty sad.

People tend to forget that, while you can legally purchase the game, you're never buying the hardware required to play it. You're still doing a disservice to Nintendo since you are essentially stealing a Wii to play this.

I've been playing the demo through PC emulation, and my mind has been blown away every single time I do.

I swear, this just gets me more and more pissed off at the Wii. The games look GORGEOUS in 1080p, and yet the hardware can't even handle its own games well enough.

@KingSigy Most people on the Dolphin Emulator site (Myself included) own a Wii. You emulate it because it looks better- but you have your Wii because there are indeed games that are either extremely demanding to emulate, or do not emulate well, or not at all. You are buying these games after all- so if you are unable to play it on your PC (For the better resolutions) then you just pop it into your Wii. OR, in my case- you import the PAL version of the game, and cannot play it on your US Wii (Unless it's soft modded, which mine is not)- so you just play it on your PC.

Have they worked out the whole exporting saves to an actual Wii console yet? I know saves FROM a console work in Dolphin, but I can't get any exported Dolphin saves to work on the Wii hardware itself.

@Ronin4life You absolutely can be anti-piracy. I own a Wii- so do most of the people on the Dolphin site. You buy the games, and the ones you cannot emulate or that do not emulate well- you just play on your wii- since you are buying the games to play them.

The benefits of playing it on the PC are the increased resolutions and graphics. To some people, it's not worth the trouble just for a higher resolution. But to some of us, it is.

No one doing this is bad, and maybe the majority of users do own a wii. However, it is still illegal, and by supporting it you are supporting those whose intentions aren't as moral and level headed as yours, which is one of the reasons our society as agreed that it is against the law at least on the civil lawsuit level.

And that is were we enter the "gray" legal ground. So far, Dolphin is up and running because it is not breaking any laws. Or at least not yet. Or at least none recognized by the US or the EU.

Are there people out there who are using it in not so legal ways? Absolutely. There are people out there who just torrent the games and don't even own a wii console.

But, my view on the matter in regards to how I personally use it- I own a wii, and I buy the games I emulate- I am doing no harm by emulating these games on my PC for visual benefits.

But it seems like we will have to agree to disagree on this matter.

@Ronin Dolphin is 100% legal. It uses an HLE BIOS, and doesn't use anything (bootstrap) ripped from the actual Wii bios. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-level_emulation

"HLE removes the common source of legality issues, by not requiring the users to provide it with the bootstrap software used by the original platform to create an environment for applications to run in. Because the emulator itself provides such environment, it no longer needs system ROM images, bootstrap cartridge images or other software obtained from a physical copy of the emulated system, a process which usually resulted in an unclear status in the light of copyright law."

To the people who somehow think this illegal and Dale is promoting piracy: he isn't.

This is not illegal if:

A) You own Skyward Sword

B) Own a Wii, and thus have the legal right to rip the BIOS.

If you fulfill both of those requirements - congratulations, you are legally playing Skyward Sword on the PC.

People also somehow think homebrew is illegal. News flash: the US Government stated that things like jailbreaking are OK. If you own a product, as long as you're not stealing software, it is A-OK for you to "unlock" the full potential of the product that you purchased.

The very fact that no one has acted on this does give it ground legally, but a grey area can become a dangerous place to be, as it can turn either way at the drop of a hat. Remember the sony/anon situation?
It would be awesome if Nintendo contracted the dolphin emulation group for its backwards compatibility in the wiiu, though. The industry should try to integrate some of these kinds of things more often, as the result can be far greater than the fallout of outright war.
