I'm never excited about Zelda games before they come out, because they're always fantastic. I don't think there's a lack of excitement for the game, any more than there's a lack of excitement for the next Mario game. If Nintendo does in fact have a problem on its hands with Skyward Sword, which I doubt, it's the fact that their games are so consistently great that it can feel disappointing when they're just great, as opposed to transformative and mind-blowing in the way we remember from our childhoods.
And the problem there isn't with the games, but the gamers. It's not Nintendo's fault that we're not six anymore. For most of us, our first Zelda game made us feel the way an indoor cat does when it discivers there's an outside. Which is to say, as if we'd discovered some strange new planet, unexplored and unspoiled, vast rolling multicolored hills glowing with wonder and stretching out forever.
That's a magical experience. It's also one you only ever get to have once, because once you come up against any limitation at all, the artificiality of the experience is laid bare forever. That doesn't cheapen the purity of the experience, but it does teach you that it's a game just like everything else you may or may not have played.
Point is, it's not Nintendo's fault that they can only really fool you once.
You either accept that, and play each successive Zelda (or Metroid, or anything at all, really) conscious of its artificiality, but appreciative of the exquisite craft therein, or you become the lunatic Zelda fanboy, chasing that high like a drug addict and posting Unabomber-style manifestos with lots of capitalized words about what utter shit the game is because you can'tdo this and they changed something and how dare they and blah.
And then you wait to buy the next one like everybody else. Because you're a drug addict, and you need your next fix, and who cares if it's not as good as the first time, it's a FIX, man, you NEED it.
So, basically, the only problem Zelda has is that its fans are stupid jerks stroking their nostalgia-boners.
This is also true of literally anything of which one can be a fan. Nintendo's only problem with regards to Zelda is that the worst Zelda game is still a great game, and thus inspires more shuffling fanboy zombies than ninety-nine percent of the video games ever released. Which rarely affects sales, as I said.
So yeah, I think they'll be okay.
