Left Behind tries to help kids, pander to audience photo

Left Behind: Eternal Forces, the new RTS based on the mega-selling series of Christian Rapture-themed novels, seems to have some additional surprises boxed in with it. Joystiq received it and found inside a flier asking for people to help sponsor a child in Eastern Europe.

We're all for charity, but we have to wonder if putting fliers in video game boxes is the best way to go about it. For some reason, this whole thing vaguely offends me, but then, we have robotic hearts uncapable of your human emotions.

So we leave it to you guys. Is this a great way to help kids out or is it pandering to a target audience already predisposed to giving by packaging a bit of salvation in with a game that blatantly tells you "if you're bad, you will burn in our hell and be shot with our machine guns"?

I'm sorry, but a timed advertisement? It seems terribly wrong to slap advertising on something you already paid for... isn't that the point of advertising in the first place? to pay for something that is free to begin with?

as far as putting the flier in the box... if they want to - let them - I guarantee 99% of the gaming community will look at it and toss it on the floor. the other 1% will look at it and stuff it back in the box from which it came.

I am all for charity - But it seems they are barking up the wrong tree... then again - I know Nothing of Left behind, or its demographic, so maybe only goodie goodies will buy it, thus making the flier seem effective... who knows.

A timed ad would anger me more than the insert. As was said before, they could have spent the money on the kids directly. I hope they weren't expecting double-digit participation for donations. Religious people are some of the most frugal people alive.

brandan: it means that free events, like public TV, football broadcasts, etc, are made possible by the money paid to advertise during said events. So when you pay for something like a game, you shouldnt have to sit through advertisements because the comapny in question already has their grubby paws on your cash.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun.
