Left 4k Dead is what Left 4 Dead would be in 4 kilobytes photo

The Java4K competition is an annual competition between programmers to create games in Java that are no more than 4kb in size. The competition began back in 2002 and the 2009 tournament started up just last month. There are a number of 4kb games already in the tournament, but the one that is making the rounds on the gaming blogs at the moment is Left 4k Dead by Markus Persson.

The game is inspired by Valve’s Left 4 Dead and sees the player fighting off an endless horde of zombies as they try to escape the level. There is no sound, but the lighting in the game is pretty amazing considering that this is just under 4kb in size.

I get to about 400 points before I give up, as I can’t find the exit. Give the game a try for yourselves and post your scores in the comment. How many points can you get?

This is really well-executed. I love the attention to detail, like the way it takes a second after you reload before you can start mowing down zombies again. Really challenging and fun.

My only issue is the placement of the reload key. It makes sense that it's "R" for "reload" but it feels a bit awkward reaching from WASD to reach it. Of course, that could also be a conscious design choice to simulate the challenge of reloading under pressure but I still think I'd rather have it mapped to the right mouse button.

I guess he was keeping with the Left 4 Dead control set which had R as Reload.

@KaL_YoshiKa: That would also make sense.

I haven't been able to get the dang thing to display. Tried reinstalling Java, disabled NoScript and AdBlock... Nothin'. Not even on IE.

the lack of press melee button and win makes this java version a hundred times better than the real l4d imo

I got around 200. Seems you can't outrun the zombies, so if one touches you, you need to kill it ASAP or it'll chew your health to zero fast.
