Left 4 Dead sells to a retail horde of 1.8 million photo

A multiplayer zombie apocalypse game would need to have God himself working against its success in order to not be a hit, so it comes as no surprise that Valve's Left 4 Dead has sold 1.8 million copies.

The sales figures were revealed by Electronic Arts in a conference call today, along with the news posted earlier regarding Dead Space getting a Wii port. The figures are for retail copies of the Xbox 360 and PC versions. Since Valve publishes the game on Steam, those figures were not included.

Not bad going, and hopefully this means Valve pocketed quite a bit of cash from retail and Steam combined. The game is easily my most played online title of recent memory, and Valve deserves every penny.

I've enjoyed every single nanosecond I've spent with L4D so far.

I've been renting this game via Gamefly for a month and I can't bring myself to send it back, nor can I afford to buy it. Woe is me.

Woe I say.

Yeah, couldn't agree more. Valve deserves this success, and I hope it translates into even more brilliant products in the future, as well as continued support for this amazing game.

What's the publisher in Europe? I've bought it and I don't see an EA logo anywhere.

I've played through the Dead Air campaign today with a friend, and I think this game deserves every cent I've spent on it.

I hope everyone who plays L4D and hasn't played HL2 and its episodes goes back and does so. They will highlight even more what a stellar track record Valve has.

It deserves every single one of those sales, it really does. Just imagine what the sales are going to be by year's end, as this only means more people will purchase the inevitable sequel (C'mon, you know it's coming).

Props to Valve for such a great game.

@WarZombie

I don't know that a sequel is actually inevitable. It *is* Valve, so there will almost certainly be more campaigns and other awesome improvements, but I would be shocked if the was a L4D2.

Steam sales are not even counted. That means this number is probably around 3 million as the majority PC of players bought this on STEAM.

Considering this has been (for the most part) the top seller on Steam since release, I imagine the number is quite larger than 1.8 million. :)

I took a break for a few weeks to play through some other titles, but after a solid campaign last night with my friend, I'm re-hooked. The game just has that level of appeal.

Good for Valve.

According to some research done by some sexy dude named CelicaCrazed, a PS3 version may potentially be in the works. Also, there could be a release date of June 5/09. Blog plug FTW!!

But if not, I'll definitely need to drop the cash to upgrade my PC to a respectable performance.
