Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

left4dead

If you're like me (and why wouldn't you be), you love zombies. Everything about them, from their insatiable hunger, to their lack of superhuman ability, to the way they parallel the mediocrity of humankind is nothing short of awesome.

You'll be happy to know, then, that left4dead411 has posted a hands-on preview of the game from which the site derives its name. If you haven't been keeping up on your zombie-related news, Left 4 Dead is a cooperative multiplayer zombie game built on the Source engine. Four human survivors must battle their way through around twenty different maps whilst fighting off the sometimes-human-controlled, sometimes-not legions of the undead. And if the previewers are to be trusted, this looks to be one of the coolest multiplayer games of the year.

Hit the jump for a bit more info.

The preview only covers the Human experience (the Undead preview will be added later), but if the article is to be believed, Left 4 Dead definitely looks to be a game to watch. There's an extreme emphasis on cooperativity, there's an interesting achievement system that curtails potential TK'ing n00bs, and zombie rushes are controlled by an AI "director" instead of geologically placed script triggers.

Some of the co-op stuff they've devised seems really cool: when you reload, your character automatically yells that he or she is doing so, and when you spot a "boss" zombie (ranging from zombies that can throw cars to zombies that can vomit a pheremone that makes every other NPC zombie in the vicinity attack only you), your character automatically yells this info to the rest of the group. Not to mention you can revive fallen teammates, share health packs, etcetera.

Personally, I'm waiting for a true zombie game (slow zombies, a huge/nonlinear world, the ability to board up doors and windows, and an emphasis on strategy), but the previewers would have you believe that L4D is one of the most cinematic and exciting multiplayer titles made in the last decade. It's not my dream zombie game, but (at the very least) it looks to be much more strategy-oriented that any undead game we've yet seen.

We've heard this song and dance of revolutionary gameplay and cooperatively designed levels before (though this time you could refer to it as the "groan and shuffle"), but if you're a fan of the living dead, this is definitely a game to watch.

I had this idea about 40 years ago. When is a game company gonna knock on my door and let me make my own undead murder simulator? It's almost like I'm from the future, sent back to sit here and go "It's about goddamn time" whenever a developer finally does something right. Wait a second, this isnt my diary... where am I?!

I hate the whole zombie running fad, sure it might make them scarier but doesn't fit the "true" zombie vibe. It's like giving Frankenstein a bazooka arm because it ups the coolness factor. Has anyone else read The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks? It takes zombies very serious and never onces says that they are not real so you laugh but at the same time you can almost believe that there could be zombies and that reading the book is helping you for the future. A couple of tips I've learned from the book

1. Blades don't need reloading
2. Ideal protection: Tight clothes, short hair.
3. Get up a staircase, then destroy it.

This'll probably come out amid the rush of Quality 4Q releases, which could be a good thing, all the kiddies will be playing Halo 3 and all the other big releases. we might get a nice community of people who would actually play together as the game is intended, that alone makes me want this game.
hell, just the word Zombie has this on my radar

in terms of a zombie game based on strategy akin to that of the survival guide would be fucking sick. On a non-related note about zombies, how come in all instances (movies, games, comics, now i add another example) the military is always a non-factor? It would be awesome to see a story that has at least a part or factor that relies on an offshore aircraft carrier or something. I watch futureweapons, which gives me a degree in knowing more than the canadian army (not true, they have been in alot of the shit, like d-day, so that bashing is completely unnecesary and pathetic.)

I say that 1up but I thought they were just ASSUMING it is coming on 360 cause they want it to. I mean Turtle Rock website doesn't say ANYTHING about 360 (not that I saw).

As for Gamespot, they hinted at it but no confirmation. I am not going to buy a 360 on a hint! haha

I guess I want confirmation...cause I know I will feel shamed when buying it and want to make sure it is for sure...

So what the Reverend is suggesting is Dead Rising combined with the giant world of an MMO, am I right? It does sound great.

"GS: Finally, a PC version is scheduled for the first half of 2007, with an Xbox 360 version scheduled that winter. Can we expect both versions to be identical? And will the two versions be playable against one another?

MB: Left 4 Dead was explicitly designed as an online cooperative survivor horror experience. I've been quite impressed with the Xbox 360 and its Xbox Live interface. Our game will be a perfect fit for it.

Allowing the PC and Xbox 360 versions of Left 4 Dead to play together is something we're still investigating.

GS: Fair enough. Thanks, Michael."

Sounds pretty confirmed to me just by that exchange right there.

If I get it...I want to play Summa in this game, I will kill him as a human for the NSFW Superpunta video!!!

I always wondered why don't any shooters have a fun coop nowadays, anyway? But a game being entirely based on and designed around cooparative play makes up for it.

Hey, I am a huge fan of Zombie's and wanted to let you guys know that if you too like Zombie's then check out these books by Brian Keene. "The Rising", the 2nd sequel "City of the Dead", and the soon to be released 3rd sequel "Dead Sea" (Sometime in August). They are hands down the best Zombie books you can find, and I have looked a lot; for eight bucks you should give "The Rising" a shot and you may be hooked like me.

Blindsidedork... Now I would not call myself one of the best book readers in the world, but me and my friend (who I forced to read the book) think they are great. Like I said its eight or so bucks, so just pick it up and give it a chance. Check it out on Brian Keene's webs site (google it) and Amazon. The zombies are not typical zombies, which i thought I would have hated, but it just brings in a different style. Also the books are in the talks for 2 movies, and a video game. Hope this helps you check the book out

Honestly BlindsideDork.... You seem like a big zombie fan (I read your posts on other pages) if you get the book "The Rising" and do not enjoy it even a little I will be surprised. You will find it good, and you can take my word. If you call yourself a zombie fan you will love the book, it has a great twist of zombies with a great story. Its even won the Bram Stoker award!

Yeah its weird with the zombies driving around and all, but you look over it after a while, and I don't think I would like to read anything else zombie related. And it even brings in some cool stuff, like the action scenes are really cool b/c the zombies can shoot back. But if you don't think that sounds like something you would like than this book is not for you. But its a good read and I am sure you will enjoy it.

Never read World War Z but I know the last chapter of the book is about World War Z so it must be canon for the zombie world.

Yeah, I'd probably go see a frankenstein with a bazooka arm movie. Or better yet its a Frankenstein VS. Bazooka Frankenstein movie
