It's over the caterwauling of Nick Chester that I write this, the man's heart has been broken, and as you might suspect, it's all the fault of a few zombies. You see, in spite of rumors that Left 4 Dead would be ported to the PS3 being denied by Valve themselves (which in the grand scheme of things is like confirmation from On High) Nick, in his childlike optimism, held out hope. Now I, in league with Valve, am here to crush those hopes.
In a recent trip to Valve Studios, the fine folks at OXM were informed in no uncertain terms that as far as consoles are concerned, the Xbox 360 will be the only one to get a port. Heading up development for the 360 version of Left 4 Dead is Certain Affinity, a small developer responsible for much of the Halo 2 and 3 DLC. Considering their demonstrably excellent work, I couldn't be more pleased.
According to Valve the 360 version still has a bit of work left to be done before they can put the proverbial baby to bed, however they did reveal some information regarding Left 4 Dead's multiplayer features on the 360. While four player coop and eight player four-on-four versus matches will be supported via Live or system link (does anyone actually do that?) Valve has neglected to comment on whether split-screen multiplayer, something seriously lacking in games today, will be available.
[Via NEOGaf -- Thanks, Adam]
not that surprising. The head honcho at valve (forgot his name) has been bashing the PS3 since day one.
My screens better be slipt or I will burn it to the ground!
CoD4 pisses me off for that very reason... and it's the only reason...
Speaking of XBL anyone got Jack Thompson's gamertag yet?
System link is awesome when you live in the same apartment with 3 360s. Playing GOW with system link in the same room is spectacular.
Not on PC?
PCs where it's at for this game anyway. I assume it'll be much easier to direct or whatever with the PC and the whole Mouse/Keyboard yada yada.
The PS3 Source engine obviously isn't up to scratch.
Yeah, it's worth hanging out with friends around two TVs and two 360s just for the live interaction and party atmosphere. That being said, I'd assume there would be four-player split-screen, since I can't imagine them expecting you to hook-up more than two systems at once; there's usually the option for that, but I never see it done.
Omigod. When I saw the headline I about freaked out. Thought you meant it would only be out on X360. PCs have been spared, thank god. Valve has not betrayed its masters.
@covah
That's Gabe Newell your talking about.
@Tino
It's coming out on PC first.
Horrible news. Just horrible. I have to play a great game on a bugged out, red-ringing console. I'm starting to hate Valve. PC gamer was just hyping me up for this game, now I have to pay $60 for the dumbed down console version. Very niiice.
Did the PS3 kill Gabe Newell’s kid or something? He seems to spew nothing but vitriol when asked about it. It’s a damn shame.
Yeah, I can see it being like this. Valve has proved completely incapable of doing anything on the PS3, and they're largely disorganised just default PC wise (dear GOD it took over 9000 years to get Episode 2 out and Portal with it) that I just can't blame them.
I like their shit, and if this gets them "there" faster, then fuck the PS3.
If this game turns out good, which I'm being a bit cautious to expect, I'll probably get it on PC anyways.
WTF are you talking about dubbed-down console version.
Most ports of PC games don't have split screen so I wouldn't hold my breath.
Let me guess, it's a first person shooter?
I lost any respect i had for Valve 10 days ago.
Long before this news.
I simply realized I don't like anything about their games. At least not since I played the Prince of Persia trilogy and Assassin's Creed.
@PrinceofCannedPeaches: same here
yeaaaaah. suck it bs3, who needs bru rays .
WHO?
WHOOOO?
@katz.
i think you might be a tad confused.
PS3 gets haze, 360 gets left 4 dead, but which will be better? ah who am I kidding, we all know left 4 dead will be better.
Thats good. Im happy.
Fortunately I have a PC and a PS3, so I get pretty much all of the Xbox 360 games and PS3 games.
GOD I WANT IT SO BAD!
Team Fortress 2 suffered from not having spilt screen on the 360, and I'm not holding out hope for this either.
Wait, Valve is directly developing the game? I was under the impression that this was an 'official' mod supported by the company as a publisher.
This is one of my most anticipated titles of 2008. The zombie slaying can't come soon enough.
PC elitism! Whoooooooo!
@ArrestedDeveloper
I sure don't know it.
@ winojesus not in the slightest.
I already deleted all traces of the Orange Box on my pc 10 days ago.
Poor Nick. Ah well... sorry PS3 crowd, that really sucks. Hope they dont fuck it up for the Xbox people.
also i didn't like Portal and no one ever did answer me what exactly is great about it?
I like the concept of this game and the zombie animations looked awesome, but the humans looked like sliding gun turrets, firing didn't seem to have any recoil and it sounded like everyone had cap guns. Serious case of floating gun syndrome.
If they fix that, I'll be interested.
Left4Dead is being developed by Turtle Rock studios, the same studio that made the new models and updated maps for Counterstrike: Source. Valve is overseeing the game's creation, and in fact owns Turtle Rock. The PC version and 360 port are intended to launch simultaneously, and the release date is planned sometime in Fall 2008.
wow the headline freaked me out too!
it better be......
Anyone who is disappointed in this game or TF2 not having split-screen is...well get over it. Layms
YES!!
You dtoid you should change the title of this post because I almost fainted that this game would only come out on 360 and not for the pc.... But lucky it is still coming out for pc.
@katz
WTF are you talking about?What does POP and AC have to do with Valve?Thats like saying you dont like Bioware since you started playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band
If they fuck people like they did on TF2 for 360, then fuck them I'm not getting. I got fucked so hard on that one it still hurts.
Sorry about the headline guys, it's been changed.
Can't wait for this game! Zombies 4 life!
Will be buying on PC! FNF!?
System link is awesome. We played 12 player Halo 3 system link with three 360s at my buddies place out in the country. He doesn't even have XBOX live gold because there is no Cable or DSL out there. We were all pissed that CoD 4 doesn't allow more than 2 users per XBOX 360 on system link even though there is 4 player splitscreen on one without linking.
Multiplayer is a huge thing that can make or break games. Hopefully this one will have just as much capability as Halo 3. Honestly the lack of these options made me not want to buy CoD 4 and just borrow the disk instead.
Yeah TF2's severe lack of options still keeps me up at night. If the PC version kicks the 360's ass on yet another badass game I may never recover. This game looks so pimp. But if it only has 4 maps and I have to wait months to pay to download a few more maps... I won't be held responsible for my actions, (but it will involve a flaming bag of dog shit and Valve's doorstep.)
This game looks so fast paced I wonder how it will work on a gamepad. They might have to slow it down or something for it to be even remotely playable. Hopefully they don't ruin the 360 version as that's the only way I could play this game.
In before PC elitis- Oh. Nevermind.
Waitaminute...doesn’t Nick have a 360?
we TOTALLY need to set up FNF's for this game on Steam
Damnit, split-screen is a make or break thing for me with this game. I do most of my multiplayer shooter playing on LAN days with friends, and if they can do at last to people on a box with this I can pretty much guarantee we'll buy a few copies.
An obligatory: for the love of fucking christ, develop cross platform compatibility. Yer killing me Valve.
Yay Valve! :3 :D :O >:)
RE: Blackdove
'Valve has proved completely incapable of doing anything on the PS3'
Bullshit, they didn't even port the PS3 version of Orange Box, it was an inhouse EA team. Get your facts right.
As for Left4Dead it is a must buy for me. I will get the 360 version, as a now converted PC to 360 gamer. It'll be fun to play this with my mates who've all got 360s now. When I get a new PC I'll get back into PC gaming tho. Can't play UT3 on a console ;-)
Doesn't bother me, I wouldn't want to play this shit on a console anyways.
g a y
in during BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!
katz:
What kind of games do you like? Because it sounds like you have a PC, and if that's the case then you better love Valve for what they're doing for the PC scene... if not for them it'd likely be dead by now. Assassin's Creed... hah.
POS3 oWned again!
Hahahahhaa. PShit3, OWNED!
Cool. Good thing I'm getting it for PC then.
Hell yeah, in your face PS3!
Why Valve hates the PS3 so much is completely beyond me... Can't they just get EA to do a port of this for the PS3 like they did with the Orange Box?
Wait... Did I just request an EA game? 8|
Anyway, the PC version of this game is gonna be the one to play anyway, just as it is with pretty much everything Valve makes.
I don't own a PS3, but this news still sucks. I feel for my gaming brothers and sisters who have one and were interested in the game (except Black Dove, who just irks me).
It doesn't even make sense as far as Valve as a company is concerned. It will clearly cut into the profit margin for the game.
Early release date please?
Gtting it for my 360 ASAP!!!!
I read the title as PS3/360 exclusive and was ready to rant about poor PC owners.
But it's PS3 owners getting screwed. So I don't care.
360 fanboys, at their finest.
my friends and i LAN all the time with our xbox 360's. in some ways i like it better than Live... only because a majority of my friends don't have a Gold acct, or even internet (they moved out) so getting together is very reminiscent of the old days in the 90's when the coolest thing was talking smack to people in person.. and getting a punch in the arm for a response.
If Left 4 Dead pulls off splitscreen (even if it's not online splitscreen) it will be GODLY. It'll finally give us the multiplayer game that we've needed...the only game with splitscreen in a long time has been Halo 3. Could you imagine 2 player splitscreen per console, online? Best. Experience. EVAR!!!!
Really excited to play this on the 360. I still can't get into PC games.
Nice to see what Certain Affinity is up to.
And people, stop complaining about Valve games on the 360. Everyone knows Valve games play best on the PC. Get over it and just be happy that Valve would toss anything the console's way.
@ DryvBy
Horrible news. Just horrible. I have to play a great game on a bugged out, red-ringing console. I'm starting to hate Valve. PC gamer was just hyping me up for this game, now I have to pay $60 for the dumbed down console version. Very niiice.
Uhh what? You were excited for the PC version, but since they're making it for the 360 as well, you're going to HAVE to play it on the 360 now? Why wouldn't you get the PC version still?
Oh nevermind, I suppose yo
