Left 4 Dead confirmed as PC/360 exclusive

Left 4 Dead confirmed as PC/360 exclusive photo
     Xbox 360

It's over the caterwauling of Nick Chester that I write this, the man's heart has been broken, and as you might suspect, it's all the fault of a few zombies. You see, in spite of rumors that Left 4 Dead would be ported to the PS3 being denied by Valve themselves (which in the grand scheme of things is like confirmation from On High) Nick, in his childlike optimism, held out hope.  Now I, in league with Valve, am here to crush those hopes.

In a recent trip to Valve Studios, the fine folks at OXM were informed in no uncertain terms that as far as consoles are concerned, the Xbox 360 will be the only one to get a port. Heading up development for the 360 version of Left 4 Dead is Certain Affinity, a small developer responsible for much of the Halo 2 and 3 DLC. Considering their demonstrably excellent work, I couldn't be more pleased.

According to Valve the 360 version still has a bit of work left to be done before they can put the proverbial baby to bed, however they did reveal some information regarding Left 4 Dead's multiplayer features on the 360.  While four player coop and eight player four-on-four versus matches will be supported via Live or system link (does anyone actually do that?) Valve has neglected to comment on whether split-screen multiplayer, something seriously lacking in games today, will be available.

System link is awesome when you live in the same apartment with 3 360s. Playing GOW with system link in the same room is spectacular.

PCs where it's at for this game anyway. I assume it'll be much easier to direct or whatever with the PC and the whole Mouse/Keyboard yada yada.

Yeah, it's worth hanging out with friends around two TVs and two 360s just for the live interaction and party atmosphere. That being said, I'd assume there would be four-player split-screen, since I can't imagine them expecting you to hook-up more than two systems at once; there's usually the option for that, but I never see it done.

Omigod. When I saw the headline I about freaked out. Thought you meant it would only be out on X360. PCs have been spared, thank god. Valve has not betrayed its masters.

Horrible news. Just horrible. I have to play a great game on a bugged out, red-ringing console. I'm starting to hate Valve. PC gamer was just hyping me up for this game, now I have to pay $60 for the dumbed down console version. Very niiice.

Did the PS3 kill Gabe Newell’s kid or something? He seems to spew nothing but vitriol when asked about it. It’s a damn shame.

Yeah, I can see it being like this. Valve has proved completely incapable of doing anything on the PS3, and they're largely disorganised just default PC wise (dear GOD it took over 9000 years to get Episode 2 out and Portal with it) that I just can't blame them.

I like their shit, and if this gets them "there" faster, then fuck the PS3.

If this game turns out good, which I'm being a bit cautious to expect, I'll probably get it on PC anyways.

I lost any respect i had for Valve 10 days ago.
Long before this news.
I simply realized I don't like anything about their games. At least not since I played the Prince of Persia trilogy and Assassin's Creed.

Wait, Valve is directly developing the game? I was under the impression that this was an 'official' mod supported by the company as a publisher.

I like the concept of this game and the zombie animations looked awesome, but the humans looked like sliding gun turrets, firing didn't seem to have any recoil and it sounded like everyone had cap guns. Serious case of floating gun syndrome.

If they fix that, I'll be interested.

Left4Dead is being developed by Turtle Rock studios, the same studio that made the new models and updated maps for Counterstrike: Source. Valve is overseeing the game's creation, and in fact owns Turtle Rock. The PC version and 360 port are intended to launch simultaneously, and the release date is planned sometime in Fall 2008.

System link is awesome. We played 12 player Halo 3 system link with three 360s at my buddies place out in the country. He doesn't even have XBOX live gold because there is no Cable or DSL out there. We were all pissed that CoD 4 doesn't allow more than 2 users per XBOX 360 on system link even though there is 4 player splitscreen on one without linking.

Multiplayer is a huge thing that can make or break games. Hopefully this one will have just as much capability as Halo 3. Honestly the lack of these options made me not want to buy CoD 4 and just borrow the disk instead.

Yeah TF2's severe lack of options still keeps me up at night. If the PC version kicks the 360's ass on yet another badass game I may never recover. This game looks so pimp. But if it only has 4 maps and I have to wait months to pay to download a few more maps... I won't be held responsible for my actions, (but it will involve a flaming bag of dog shit and Valve's doorstep.)

This game looks so fast paced I wonder how it will work on a gamepad. They might have to slow it down or something for it to be even remotely playable. Hopefully they don't ruin the 360 version as that's the only way I could play this game.

Damnit, split-screen is a make or break thing for me with this game. I do most of my multiplayer shooter playing on LAN days with friends, and if they can do at last to people on a box with this I can pretty much guarantee we'll buy a few copies.
