Left 4 Dead 2 protest group is over 13,000 strong photo

Yesterday, I wrote a post tackling those who were bawling their eyes out over Left 4 Dead 2. It looks like, however, I may be taking on an entire army, since a Left 4 Dead 2 protest group has formed and it consists of 13,011 whiny crybabies. Could I finally have taken on more than I can handle? Or could I just say the word "sequel" and watch them all fall their knees and sob like children?

The boycott group was formed on Steam and they have made a list of injustices about which they are strongly complaining. This is because videogames sequels are incredibly serious business, and the existence of Left 4 Dead 2 will give everyone cancer. Here is the list of crimes they believe Valve committed:

  • Significant content for L4D1 was promised, and never delivered
  • Valve put little faith in L4D1 since they almost certainly started working on L4D2 right after release
  • The fact that L4D2 is nearly identical to L4D1 will decimate the community for both games
  • The announced date is not nearly enough time to polish content or make significant gameplay changes
  • The new character designs seem bland and unappealing so far
  • L4D2 is too bright to fit in with L4D1’s visual aesthetic
  • The fiddle-based horde music is extremely disliked, though the differently orchestrated music is otherwise welcome
  • L4D2’s release will result in a drop in quality and frequency for L4D1 content, even compared to before
  • The community has lost faith in Valve’s former reputation for commitment to their games post-release

I think my favorite is the face that it's "too bright," which is not only nitpicking horsesh*t, but is completely wrong. Every smart person knows zombies are scarier during the day. The rest of the complains are also pretty weak. Are they seriously complaining about the "fiddle-based" music? Yes they are. The only complaint that holds water is the first one, and we still don't know how much further support Valve is giving L4D anyway.

Left 4 Dead. It is super cereal business, guys.

I like their verve and "protesting" like this is a right they have. But maybe I'm being pessemestic here but I don't see this changing anything. Online protests and the like usually never accomplish anything accept making you look like a tool.

Sorry, but it doesn't seem to me to be a weak reason to complain or a non-issue that Valve failed to provide the support they announced because they went straight to working on a sequel after all their talk about having big plans for L4D.

People are (rightly) pissed with the handling of Left 4 Dead's release, not Left 4 Dead 2 in itself. There are so many things that Valve should have done by now and people find that they haven't got:

a proper SDK release
a way to integrate custom campaigns
much needed improved lobby functionality
better matchmaking
The content that was stated to be coming
and so on

because Valve have been working on a sequel.

But I guess this isn't anything worth calling a developer out on? You do remember all the stuff they said in the build up to release, right?

I agree with some of that stuff especially the character designs but its not gonna do anything, its just beating your chest and hoping someone listens.

I mean 13,000 out of how many sales that L4D had? 2, 3 million?

I was a little annoyed L4D had a sequel announced so early and that there isn't more downloadable content, but I have definitely received my money's worth with L4D. L4D is a great game and they probably could have milked our wallets dry with DLC. L4D2 will have more stuff and it seems they plan on retooling a lot of things to make the game a lot better. With all the changes it doesn't just seem like an expansion to me, it really does sound like a new game. I'm definitely looking forward to L4D2 and will buy it as soon as I possibly can after it's release.

On another note there are plenty of things to be angry about in our world and in the gaming community, a sequel to a great game with a significant amount content added is not one of them.

My favorite complaint out of that list is "The new characters seem bland and unappealing", and I have to agree with most goons when I say that sounds like "I don't want to play as black people from the south".
Valve are still releasing more stuff for L4D from now until L4D2's release and after, and are planning on including L4D's campaigns in L4D2 so the communities won't be decimated in any way that matter, you can just play the sequel and still play the good old levels you liked, so I have absolutely 0 complaints about L4D2. Bring on the bayou.

Left 4 Dead sold over 1.8 million copies EXCLUDING on Steam. Do the protesters honestly think Valve cares about 15K of those claiming not to buy it (I'm sure a lot of those will change their tune once everyone else is playing it and, oh you know, having fun with the game instead of treating it like a fucking piece of art).

Not everyone that signed in on the boycott agree with those points. Those are just the points of the creator of the group.

I signed because it's going to demolish the player base splitting it between the two games and it means no more content support for L4D1. I wasn't expecting free content, but the option of paid content was implied in many interviews from Valve. Content that is no longer coming.

So, I signed just to say I'm no longer supporting your L4D product.

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=23911

"Leonard declined to commit to there being more Valve-created content for the game, instead pointing out some upcoming functionality tweaks and the potential in user-created levels for the PC version. "We are doing updates across the summer, adding new matchmaking features, and new features to facilitate user maps after the SDK is out," he said. "Certainly, user maps will be part of the ongoing Left 4 Dead 1 experience.""

This is to show how much of a troll you are, how you close your eyes and barely ever research, just so you can go against the masses' opinion and generate traffic for dtoid with your flamebait. Although I think it is stupid to have a petition to cancel the game, I find myself agreeing with most of the points (except for the lighting, WTF). The biggest is development time. With Valve even giving there "episodic" content years between sequels, it seems odd for them to immediately rush a sequel to a new IP. It seems like this is something that they meant to have in the original, or as DLC. If that's not the case then I would consider the quality of the new L4D to be suspect when you consider development on all of Valves other projects.

All I'm saying is that Valve cut the price in half noticed a 3000% price jump correct. More sales then when the game was actually released correct. So this seems like a step backwards to me. I don't really give a shit either way, I bought LFD and don't really play it, BUT if the numbers are what Valve goes by then they should notice that according to steampowered's own game stats that 20,696 are playing L4D right now. So that means to some degree almost 55% (discounting ppl like me who joined just to get the word) customers who feel fucked.

@Guttlesswonder: Petition to cancel the game? Where?

@Jon B: You should at least read it because that shit Jim posted isn't correct anymore. The problem is that the group's mod is nowhere to be found to change that manifesto to the correct one.

I don't care if it's a sequel or an expansion pack, I refuse to buy L4D2 full price. The game barely has innovations to the previous one which still has many problems. I like Valve's games and I would support them if L4D2 was sold for the price of an expansion pack.

God I love me a good uproar.

$10 = 3-4 Maps in various games, (COD4, Halo 3, GoW)

Each stage in L4D2 consists of 4-5 maps making the entire "level".

5 stages = 20-25 new maps.

Don't forget the new game modes, weapons, and AI Director improvements.

All of that for 50-60 dollars?

Seems like a deal to me.

dude, your nitpicking when you say the community is against playing in the dark. its just some random people saying things they wouldnt like to see. hell, if you listened to the commentary in the first l4d you would see how the developer said that the game would lose its characteristic if it were played in the daytime.
i never understand how you can make a counterargument to it. the developers said it in the original and they showed us how the nighttime enviornment gives it more mood

I see a new type of Valve defense here. It's the old "you haven't played it" tactic. Well that doesn't stop anyone from badmouthing/loving a game, does it? I mean I love the Persona games, but I don't have much time to play em. But from reading all these cool articles from the cBlogs, I know they're really deep and cool. So I like a game even though I didn't/barely played it.

And I dislike others that I didn't touch. Have you guys EATEN shit? Is it good, bad? "Not having played it" isn't a defense against anything.

Now, I appreciate how the community is finally taking a stand. And I appreciate Jim for calling everybody's attention it. Luckily more people will join that "army".

Perhaps the hard part to understand in this manifest is the whole "it's a sequel to a game they love, how can they complain?".

Well, did anyone really like Final Fantasy X-2? Or Deus Ex: Invisible War? Getting a sequel doesn't mean it's gonna be good. Knowing Valve though, L4D2 will probably play a lot like L4D. And it will feel like an expansion. When does an expansion turn into a sequel? Burnout Paradise should have had a bunch of sequels then, no? They would probably be on the 3rd Paradise or 4th Paradise.

Or about GTA4. Rockstar could have been assholes, witheld the DLC, pack some more crap and then do a GTA4-2 on us. Full price for some new stuff. But no, they realized the game deserves to be expanded. It's got room for it. With DLC, we can stop having to reinvent the wheel every year, and we can start expanding the worlds that have already been created.

Valve just decided to take a crap on all that.

This is the more correct list of general complaints, what Jim keeps posting is not it. I dont see how anyone can say the boycott doesn't have a legitimate argument for their side. I have no problem with them even making this sequel, but they should have made this clear from the beginning and not string people along with continued promises of new content through DLC.

I feel that there isn't enough change in gameplay to warrant a full sequel to L4F. The tiny amount of new features in L4D2 could have easily been atlease a paid DLC, and the first one could always use more maps and campaign missions too.
