Left 4 Dead 2 on the PC gets a patch photo

While those of us with laptops who couldn't process their way out of a simple algebraic equation are playing Left 4 Dead 2 on their 360, there is definitely a large chunk of gamers out there who rock zombie killing on the PC. However, like most PC games (and console games for that matter) the final build of L4D2 landed with some glitches. To fix this issue Valve has released a patch for the game via Steam.

You can check out all the things the patch fixes at the link above, but the ones you might actually notice are:

  • Fixed performance problem when rendering lots of decals, notably when fighting tanks with shotguns
  • Fixed rcon response not working on Linux dedicated servers
  • Fixed matchmaking problem matching into Advanced and Expert games
  • Fix bug that would cause other specials to try to pummel a player a Charger disconnects or reconnects
  • Fixed versus mode results panel being cut off in transition stats screen in non-english
  • Found games: fixed non-player entries drawing the wrong type of icon in the selected item name label
  • Game mode selector on main menu now takes keyboard input

Sounds like some solid fixes up in there. Have any of these issues been plaguing you guys? I'm going to be honest and say that this patch makes me excited simply because the word pummel is used in one of the fixes.

L4D2 is just like nicotine, except instead of the patch helping you stop taking it, the patch just makes you want more.

The only real problem I have had is that all my achievements got wiped.

Instead of patching stupid glitches how about they patch the game for the hundreds of people crashing to desktop for no reason or, people like me who crash every time the game starts up, even though I was playing it just fine 2 days ago.

I'd rather wait a year for a stable game then get a beta version of L4D2. >:(

It's already been said, but achievements need to be fixed. No they don't really mean anything in the long run, but they are fun to get--and annoying to lose those "hard to get" ones >.<

Why didn't the main menu accept keyboard input from the get-go?

They need to fix the damn achievement wiping. That's the most frustrating thing yet.

Definitely put me on the list for fixing the achievement wiping. It's really annoying having 28 of 'em only to come back today and see all of them reset.

Glad they got rid of the FPS drops when the tank came out, that was the only bug I had with the game.

Finsihed the last campaign by myself last night, now ready for massive amounts of coop.

No crashes for me either. Update your drivers.

From Tuesday - Friday the game would crash to the desktop after a minute or so of playing in the multiplayer campaign. Some of the things that would trigger a crash would be friendly fire or killing a witch. After the patch was released I didn't have this problem anymore.

The issue with random crashes is to do with the drivers crashing on some graphics cards. I've tried using old, current and beta drivers. All produce the same effect, although the beta drivers hold out a while longer.

Any news on the 360 version?

A lot of other Dtoiders keep telling me the online sucks.

This isn't a patch, it's just a simple quick fix. I don't see why it's newsworthy. These are just a few tweaks that it took Valve all of an hour to throw on before they left for the weekend.

Yeah, yeah... that's great and all, but the 360 version needs some work too, guys! C'mon Valve, I know you dudes are rad. I'd like to play with my friends without getting booted and phantom-lagged every five minutes.

Also, as it isn't just a 360 problem, the AI really needs a gigantic chunk's worth of fixing. I would say tweaking, but you can't really just tweak something of this caliber and make it all better. It needs fixed. Repaired. Perhaps... revamped? I'm tired of "Aiiiiiiiiliss!" staring at me that stupid look on his face while a Hunter or a Charger beats me senseless, doing nothing to attack it, then hesitating to even pick me back up.

(Okay... picking on "Aiiiiiiiiliss!" is too easy. If you'd like, you can put any of the other survivors in there if you'd prefer, as they are all dumb as hell. It's just that my friends and I have come to conclusion that "Aiiiiiiiliss!"'s AI is in fact the dumbest and least alert of all based primarily on the fact that he is "Aiiiiiiiiiiliss!")

Y'know, I can understand the servers messing up. That would have been fine if I could have just reverted to playing single-player and effin' them zombies up solo. But it's even worse than playing with my friends who are mysteriously and constantly ten seconds in the past. Just saying... Valve, I know you won't let me down, but why no announcement?

"Aiiiiiiiiiiliss!"

Wow, imagine that! Valve releases a "sequel" to a game within a year of the original game's release, and it's laden with flaws...

@kevinsky - laden with flaws for some players. Seems more than a few of us are doing just fine. If valve is somehow on your shit list of developer/publishers, you're an idiot.

Well an amusing issue I've had is when the AI controlled survivors decide to stand still and not follow the group. They just... stand there o_0

Only happened twice now. Once while refuelling the stock car in the mall, Nick decided he didn't want to leave the mall and instead waited on the top floor. Fortunately a tank felt like punching him off the edge, that got him moving. The other time, Rochelle kept stopping in the carnival area, but when enough distance had been made between me and her, she'd zone right up next to me.

Other than that I haven't seen any other glitches, and that wont be an issue now as I'm ready for co-op ^^

I'm glad they patched the graphical issues with the tanks. I was wondering why my game started lagging every time I fired a shotgun at one. Other than that, I have noticed any problems from the patch. They do need to address the achievement problems, but I've not had any game crashing.

I've noticed only a few things so far, besides getting dropped from the occasional game.

I've gotten stuck in the scenery a few times. It happened when I was a jockey trying to fit through some cars, and again as a survivor when I got charged into a wall or something. I had to use a pipe bomb to blow myself away and move again; otherwise I would have been dead stuck.

@Exinjeru Pretty sure that a quick/minor fix is the definition of "patch" in terms of computer programs...

Otherwise, I honestly didn't think they could make the AI stupider than it was in the first game, but they some how managed. I can't tell you how many times I've been raped by a special infected while the AI sat and watched or, even worse, just ran in the other direction - those fuckers are all about the schadenfreude this time around...

A virtual assistant can help you grow your business by handling your administrative support tasks. You can outsource various tasks like accounting, advertising, clerical, administrative, answering phone calls, internet research, data entry and technical support tasks to a virtual assistant. And the best part is that you can relax and enjoy your vacation or holidays while all your works are done by your virtual assistant. Isn’t it sounds great?
