Left 4 Dead 2 demo on Xbox Live for all Gold members photo

Previously available for pre-orders only, Left 4 Dead 2's demo is now on Xbox Live for all Gold subscribers, because taking demos away from Silver members is a great way to make Gold appear more valuable than it is. The demo should give you a good idea of what to expect in Valve's soon-to-be successful zombie sequel -- more of the same, but even better.

At the time of writing, I can see the demo on Xbox Live, but I keep getting an error message. Either that means too many people are downloading it, or Microsoft has screwed up for everyone as usual. In any case, it's there, but you might have to be patient.

Now I will continue getting myself excited for the game.

Isn't the demo multiplayer only? So Silver players wouldn't be able to play anyway.

Still messed up but just sayin'. It'd be a cruel "Fuck you," to give them a demo they can't play.

the demo is not multiplayer only. The PC version had a single player demo.

Good thing my 360 RRoDed 2 days ago after almost 3 years of perfect usage. Not that it matters since I was getting it for PC but playing the demo without the pre-order nonsense would have been pretty cool.

Also, feels bad man.

Also, dude, not everyone can afford a Gold account. It doesn't mean they're "tight arses." Give people a break, man. And in reality, the Gold features ought to be free, especially given that (A) Nintendo and Sony are free, and (B) Microsoft still bombards us with ads, even though we've paid (too much) for their service. But Microsoft can do that, because we're used to it and we'll bend over and take it.

Tight? in the past month I bought 4 games and have the intention of buying at least 6 more by the holidays, all new.

I'm not buying gold becuase its not worth it, that's not to say its a bad service but as sharpless said golds basic features should be free. The sole reason my brothers live account will be kept gold is because all his freinds play halo religiously, and he asks nicely.

But hell will freeze over before I pay for stuff that should be free.

@Sharpless - no, I will not give people a break. Stop defending these people.

Those on Gold know the cost and know the benefit. For those who can't afford it (I'll get to that), it's a shame, yes, but whining that they're getting screwed is pure crap. It's like saying you're getting screwed by Audi because the A3 you've paid for isn't as powerful as the S3 others have forked out for. It's bullshit. There are no "rights" to this Gold stuff. We get what we're given.
And anyway, the argument that some people can't afford Gold. *cough, splutter* What a feeble pathetic empty argument. NOBODY should own a console that costs hundreds of dollarpounds, and own games that cost around half a ton, without being able to stump up the yearly figure for Gold if it's important to them. Even if it meant losing out on one game purchase per year! Those who are on Silver are either on there by choice, or they're whining snivelling anti-MS trolls that just love to bitch about how life isn't fair and the company that they bought their precious console from is screwing them over. It's pathetic and bawling your eyes out at it is as pointless as the arguments themselves.

Context dear boy, context. The tight arses are those on silver who whinge and complain about not having the benefits of gold. Those who choose to stay silver and don't whinge like a spoilt child are all good in my book.

Though you smartly join the ranks of the idiots by claiming stuff "should be free". Yes, but of course Sir Black Nexus, if *you* say it should be free, then it should be... no wait, if any one of the buying public, or even ALL of them say it should be free, then of course, the big companies who create your box of delights should obey your every wish. You are their shareholders after all. Without you... oh hang on, without you they'd merely have the other millions willing to stump up the cash.

Maybe I'm blind, but where are these ads that Microsoft 'bombard' us with. I use Live pretty much every day, and I've not seen any ads. Unless you mean the promotion of new games, which as an online service for gamers it makes perfect sense to give us a taste of future games. Plus you don't have to look at any of if you don't want. I've heard this talk of 'ads all over Live' before, and I just don't see it.

@MesonW - what I don't understand is why you care so much about what other people choose to or not choose to buy? REGARDLESS of whether or not gold is worth it, a demo is supposed to be promotion for a product, not something you should have to pay for. That's all anybody's saying here.

@ the 'Who would buy this on Xbox?' question.

I'm an old PC gamer and my Pc Specs show it. I'm getting this for 360 on release, as my old P4 AGP setup is mediocre to OK with L4D, but 360 is smooth.

I bought L4D on PC as well when it was like $15 bucks, and by time I build a new PC in Spring, I figure I'll grab the PC version of L4D2 on a similar deal.

Played the Demo, as I have some loot on the 360 version. I really like the new infected and the level layouts. I am pumped for Co-Op Story play and some mad Versus play.

I'm a Silver member who has no use for any of the Gold's features, and any demos that pop up on Gold I can likely play another way. Therefore, I'll be playing the demo on PC.

There. Wasn't so hard to say that.

No matter what people say...

The majority of Valve's community is on PC. Is there anything wrong with getting a Valve game on a console? No. But don't be surprised when the community is four times as large, and supports mods such as Resident Evil Left 4 Dead levels. The requirements for any Valve game also aren't that large: if you bought a console at launch, you could have bought a PC that more than covers Left 4 Dead 2.

Free no, I don't expect to use the internet for free, that's why I pay my phone company. You see my net works without my 360 gold subscription, this why I'm puzzled as to why MS would ask us to essetially pay for somthing I already own.

I pay DLC, that's extra work, I can see paying for additional features, their additional features yeah they costs money, but why am I being charged for basic access, well according to your logic its because MS got million of other idiots to do it and a bunch of greedy corperate bastards to help foot the bill just incase, BRILLIANT.

Sharpless realizes there's something wrong with it, but pays it anyway because he doesn't want to miss out, I can respect that.but you pay the money without realizing there's something at least slightly wrong with paying for something every other company offers for free ought to take a look in the mirror before you utter the words fanboy, troll, or idiot, because if those statements above are truly your justification you might as well have fanboy idiot troll tatooed across your forehead. And you can tell the artist to add the word braindead while he's at it.

BlackNexus. I'm happy to pay 4 pounds a month for something that gives me so much fun. 4 pounds is nothing - not even a pack of smokes. So carry on proselytizing to us all about the free alternative, but I don't care. I've played on PSN a bit, and whilst it's a good free service, it lacks something; something that's hard to nail down, but the lack of a fully mic'd up community definitely adds to this feel of 'something missing'. I'll happily pay my 4 quid a month and indulge in the fun, even if you can't understand why.

Just played the demo through twice. Bleurgh, it truly is just like the first game. New infected are pretty lame, and none are as good as the original 4. Melee weapons are sweet, but there's really not much else to say.
De-fribs and adrenaline are nice ideas, but I honestly think the worthwhile new stuff could have been DLC...
Shan't be getting it, might as well just play the first one.

Autumn is a hater. It's a sequel, therefore it's going to feel like the previous game but with more. Well and that's exactly what it is, therefore it's a sequel because that's what sequels are. Awesome. But yeah, I love it and the game itself is adding a good amount of new stuff, can't wait to pick it up.

I do understand why,I pay my brothers gold subscription. Some people will pay not to miss out, some just want to be with freinds, there are various reasons, and I respect them all, even encourage a few.

My point is that there's no reason they should be charging for a basic online sevice when you pay a phone bill. You have your reasons, all good ones, but at the end of the day you encouraged corperate greed, something everyone wants less of.

You have fun, therefore a justification, again I can respect that, but on the other had you must respect the fact that there's no justifying that for some for one reason or another and respect that as well.

His logic dictates that if you don't pay for gold your either a cheapass or a troll. Forget fanboy if that's his honest train of thought he's retarded.

Wow, nothing beats running around with a machete/guitar and unleashing. Happy to see the Witch and Tank still make appearances. And yes, if I do buy the game I'll buy it for the 360. Just because I have L4D on the PC and after the first few months it started lagging and lagging and was eventually unplayable. Brain over PC snobbery.

@ Mag: Dude, I know you're a PC apologist and all, but what the fuck difference does it make if the majority of Valve's community is on PC? My community of friends is on 360 and we have no trouble finding plenty of people to play, so what is your point? I want to play with MY friends, I don't care how many people play whatever game on what platform. I will grant you that the mods are cool, but I manage to get by without them ;)

@ PC elitists: Additionally, I know PC flagwavers say that "if you don't like M/K controls, you can plug in a 360 controller to a PC" to counter the controls issue but, we both know that will only lead to you getting raped by the M/K users. I'm all for people liking what they like, but for fucks sake shut the fuck up about it, god damn. Accept the fact that some people just don't want to fuck with PC gaming, enjoy your "superior" platform, and get over it. Fuck.

What happens in five years from now when all your friends quit the game?

You can join a community dedicated server, and make some new friends that all want to play Left 4 Dead 2. I know you may not see the IMMEDIATE results because you have a group of good friends to play with (I hope I can join in sooner than later!), but the common shitty aspect of console games is the fact that the community simple perishes upon the release of a sequel. Also, I know you're a Left 4 Dead lover, and will buy all future DLC, but what about the casual players, who would be on the fence? PC Left 4 Dead users can just get it all for free, hence more games.

With the PC, you get a larger community (IE more games to play when your friends are at work/quit the game/have company over/have life commitments that force them to sell the game). That's a huge plus. Generally, I get both. The 360 for the friend aspect like you enjoy, and the PC for the longevity/value.

Clearly some spelling out is in order. You're a cheapass or a troll if you stick with silver, can afford gold but choose not to, AND.. (and let's be clear here as you've obviously decided this next salient point was worth ignoring to try and get Mr TeaCup on your side)... AND... whinge about not having the benefits Gold members do. You pay, you gain. You don't, you don't complain.

Should you calmly choose to remain on Silver, and don't fill forums full with shite about how unfair life is whilst on Silver, then go right ahead - you're perfectly entitled to such a stance. It's the bitch bitch moan I object to. Pay the premium or stfu.

And as regards the whole "should be getting it for free" malarkey... games on 360 cost more than PC games, games on XBLA can be had for free elsewhere... boohoo, it's a fact of 360 ownership that you either buy into or don't. But to sit there whining about how it's all wrong... pointless. Absolutely pointless. Pull your socks up, gather yourself together and get over it.
