Left 4 Dead 2 confirmed for Australia, heavily edited photo

So, as we all know by know, Australia banned Left 4 Dead 2 because the OFLC rating board is tied to archaic and outdated regulations. Australian fans will be pleased to know that L4D2 has now been approved for the country, but that a number of heavy edits have been made to achieve the MA15+ rating that all games need.

"The game no longer contains depictions of decapitation, dismemberment, wound detail or piles of dead bodies lying about the environment," reports News.com.au. "No wound detail is shown and the implicitly dead bodies and blood splatter disappear as they touch the ground."

Ouch. Hardly seems like Left 4 Dead at all, does it? Valve is still appealing the original decision, and hopes that eventually an unedited version will appear. In the meantime, however, it seems like Australian gamers have been screwed over once again, all because some random guy wants to make decisions for them.

Boy, I hope that appeal comes through. At the very least, if the game is approved classification, then there's no legal trouble in importing a copy.

I feel for you Aussie gamers.

I'm sure Valve could easily just give aussie gamers a patch option via Live, to put the stuff back in again.

If in doubt, just import it.

Hmmm. ok.
why not just sell this as it is, and offer the missing pieces as free DLC?
Problem solved, just a minor hassle.

The aussie version is called Left 4 Bread and the object of the game is to bake some bread.

Yeah, and they could replace all the blood with confetti and glitter! Australia's like some weird overprotective mother.

@ CormactheMac87

Somehow I imagine the ratings board having more of an issue with violently shooting the hell out of a hoard of cute bunny rabbits then zombies.

Edited yes, but at least they still get the game. As long as it's fun, does the amount of blood and dismemberment really matter?

Well, this would be the version my wife would like.
Granted, her threshold of game gore is pinata breaking in Viva Pinata.
So...take that as you will.

They should replace the infected with teddy bears and the violence with hugs.

Couldn't they just have the game some how automatically link up to the child proof settings of the individuals xbox360?

or is that too technical for anyone in that country?

They'll have to pay more for less. Sucks to be them.

I guess they deserve it for what Josef Fritzl did!

I expect Australians will get a good version somehow.

"Does the amount of blood and dismemberment really matter?"

It depends on what kind of game we are talking about. In a game where the point is to survive a zombie invasion by killing people with guns and melee items, yes the gore is important. No, it won't ruin the game by a long shot, but it IS important.

I for one won't be buying the game in it's edited state. I don't doubt that modders will release a fix soon after the game is out, but until then I'll spend my time with Uncharted 2 and Borderlands.

I like the rainbows and jellybeans idea. That would be so absurd that it would make the game worthwhile. Maybe the zombies could all sound like happy screaming kids, and you're actually shooting them with nerf darts that stick to their faces. And then because it's Australia you should see a lot of boobs and Puppetry of the Penis.

Does anyone else think the standard PC version will be downloaded like crazy over there?

@PL Still too violent. Also offers scenes of servitude of baking bread for other people. It will be called Left 4 Idle. 4 people stand around idly, doing nothing, as if in a standing coma. Still will barely pass Australia's ratings though...crafty swine...

So it's just empty streets in L4D now? It's just going to cost the devs money - who's going to buy it in this reduced state?

I do feel sorry for the Germans though. EVERY single game containing blood or violence gets BANNED.

This is probably going to effect the New Zealand release too, like it did for GTA4. If the digital copy I preordered on Steam is censored, I'll bum a duck. There is no reason for it to be.

Gabr Newell was interviewed by an Aussie gamer site while he's here and they said they are looking to add it all back in with a patch as soon as it hits. That's what happened with GTAIV. Because they don't govern updates and stuff.

Or did my brain make this up so I would stop feeling sad? Lol

Thankfully the refused classification on the original L4D2 is still being appealed, as the edited version is just to make sure we get it on time. But still - they've basically edited out stuff which is already in the first L4D, which is totally lame.

EA are "confident that an uncensored version of Left 4 Dead 2 will be available to NZ consumers."

That's good. Any Aussies don't want to take a chance on a patch can import from NZ.

The confusing thing is that games like DeadSpace (which is one fucking awesome head trip of a game) was able to get through the censorship while a fun and simple shooter is being slammed and censored.
