Leaked Uncharted 2 images are pants-tentingly awesome photo

As I’ve said time and again, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune was my favorite PS3 exclusive of 2007 (even though I spent more time with Warhawk). Part of the reason was its beautiful, lush environments, which remain, to this day, some of the best graphics I’ve ever seen on the PS3 -- and for my money, they rival those of visually heralded 360 games like Gears of War. And that was only with “30 or 40 percent” of the PS3’s power!

This time around, Naughty Dog claims they’re getting close to using all of the console’s under-the-hood muscle, and boy, does it show in the Uncharted 2 screenshots and concept art that were leaked on NeoGAF. Like I said, I thought the original Uncharted looked awesome, but I was playing it on my relatively small (26") HDTV. I recently saw the game at a friend’s house on his 40" LCD, and I was simply blown away; it looked even better.

Reportedly, the teaser trailer shown at the Spike VGAs last night comprises in-game footage -- in other words, it’s not CG -- and after seeing it, the debut trailer, and these images, I’m convinced that Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is going to blow us away all over again when it launches next fall. Hit up the gallery for the images -- there are twelve screenshots and eight pieces of concept art.

[Via Ripten -- thanks, Sam!]

AMAZING! What a beautiful game as if the first one wasn't good enough! it just shows the versatility of the engine. Can't wait to play this and God Of War 3 sometime next year!

This just looks fantastic - and the funny thing is that the character design and story actually stand up to the graphics, that is, if you base your ideas on the first one. This game is going to rock!

Technically, it is CGI, but it was rendered in real time on a machine comparable to the PS3 sitting in my living room. This game looks awesome, hopefully the shooting mechanics are better. They weren't horrible in the first game, they just needed some tweaking.

My baggy jeans are so tight right now I could start a new Emo band and be succesful.

@Brainderailment
Indeed. I loved the shooting but only with the pistol. The machine guns were useless. I only used them in the last section. Talking about the end. I don't want any more of that shit. That ruined it for me.

@ Mr Sadistics sex slave:

Yes! I was totally in love with the first 3/4 of the game. It was all about the sneak in and unleash mayhem or stealth about... the last 1/4 of the game I ran with a shotgun out shooting over my shoulder while running for my life.. I hated the abrupt change of pace...

Beyond that, amazingly beautiful game.
The scripting was great, the game actually had good character development. I had emotions other than anger and frustration about gameplay. I got mad at characters, felt sorry for them.. it was great.

I read in Game Informer that Naughty Dog has some great cutscenes and in-game sequences to help the story achieve the cinematic quality the first one hit as well.

It's a good article, so check it out if you haven't yet.

I'm eagerly awaiting this game...

Awesome!

I think too, that Uncharted is the best game I've got for my PS3, even better than Metal Gear Solid 4. The environment was alive! so green and full of details! But it was too short. I hope Uncharted 2 will be a little longer.

As a PS3 owner, it's been hard the last little while to sit here and watch as the console got ridiculed and mocked. These images make it all worth it ^_^

They also look much better in full resolution on the NeoGAF thread. What type of wizardry are they using over at Naughty Dog!?

the reason they're leaked is so naughty dog doesnt have to say they're screenshots. because they're not.

its very apparent that they're downscaled bullshots from a game engine render, but not real time. notice the odd resolutions and complete lack of aliasing as well as the artistic blur effects selectively applied.

i'm sure it will be one of the best looking ps3 games to date; but there's no way these are screenshots of gameplay. even w/ full cell offloading the rsx cant handle aa in this manner; the use of Quincunx AA in so many first party exclusive titles is proof of that.

@Too Much Coffee Man - obviously you haven't played the first game. There are many instances where the real time gameplay engine looked just as good as the cinematics.

This looks like a natural quality progression the tech could take in the series.

It looks AMAZING, and I can't wait. The first game was awesome....and I loved the twist at the end.

as a working artist I gotta say I'm alot harder to impress on visuals, the art direction matters a whole lot more then the technical achievements, but that being said....
HOLY SHIT THAT LOOKS AWESOME.

@PixelJunky i have the first one and yes it does look very good compared to other PS3 games. I dont think you understand my statement though.

If you look at those screens you can tell they're designed to be printed in magazines & downsampled. yes it may be from the engine but if you watch the trailer shown at the VGAs you can see aliasing just like the first one. the first was 1280x720 2xAA. 2xAA is below QAA by a small fraction in cost (QAA being used in the resistance games which were written specifically for ps3's arch). If they moved to QAA the entire image would have a slight blur. there is no blur except in the artistic selections and a complete lack of aliasing.

for example look at this picture
Uncharted 2 bullshot

and compare it to this screenshot from uncharted 1
gameplay screenshot

now here are some bits from a direct grab of the trailer in mp4 off of sony's official site. it still looks like 2xAA to me.
Uncharted 2 2xAA

so the assumption that leaked shots of a game are direct captures of said game really is begging the question.

until there is further evidence these are not bullshots for magazine printing i'm going to stick to my guns and best available evidence and say the complete lack of AA screams downsampled bullshot.

In order to blow us away all over again, it would have had to have blown us away the first time.
