Street Fighter IV is making the rounds in Japan today and a local Akihabara resident managed to snag some footage of Sagat and Balrog in action. The above video shows off Zangief fighting against Sagat. Apparently, this build of the arcade version has Sagat as being the final boss in SF IV. After beating the game, a "Thanks for playing" message appears and it's back to the start.

This is obviously not the final build as it would be blasphemy to have anyone but M. Bison or Akuma as the final boss. Hit the jump for footage of Balrog in action.

[Update: Seth over at the PlayStation blog confirmed three more stages based in North America, South Asia, and South America.

Here we have Zangief taking on Balrog, or M. Bison for you originalists. As of now, Balrog is the fourth stage boss for this build. It also looks like Balrog still doesn't know what a kick is either.

I got a chance to play Street Fighter IV last week at GDC and I have to say that I loved it. It still feels like a true Street Fighter game even with all the changes it has gone through.

I thought M. Bison was dead, so he couldn't possibly be the final boss in SFIV. I could be mistaken.

Maybe a Spy for the Illumiatti could be the final boss in the final version to ya know set up SF III's story......

unless they discard III in the cannon, then give us Gouken as the boss.

Dexter: Wow, I had no idea, I just read his Wikipedia, lol. Well, the game does take place before III but not sure how it coincides with Alpha.

Michiyoyo brings up a good point though that Gouken could be a boss too. Hell, as legendary as he has become, it makes perfect sense for him to be the boss. Bah, I just want to play as M. Bison!

I'm with Dr Nutt.

street fighter 4 seems to take the approach that everything old is new again, and i wouldn't be suprised if sagat was the final boss. but his chest is scarred, so i guess this isn't the prequel treatment. hmmmmm....

Oh shit. I'm glad they're in there. Though I'd like to have M Bison in there just cause, I think it would be awesome if Akuma/Gouki was the last boss. I'm ready for more new characters though.

Also, the lighting in the Vegas level looks amazing.

There really is no correct "canon" for Street Fighter, especially if you go by the games.

Anyways, those videos rocked and Sagat looks awesome. Too bad some joe job had to walk infront of the camera ever 2 seconds.

The rumor is that the final boss will be Shen Long, the mistranslated/april fools joke character from SFII.

I'm uber-happy that Sagat is in, but Balrog? Yes yes yes, I know this isn't the "final roster", but remember that the first Street Fighter game in a new chapter doesn't have too many characters.

-Street Fighter II had eight.
-Street Fighter Alpha had ten.
-Street Fighter III had ten.

Street Fighter IV already has twelve. I really doubt we're going to see any more aside from maybe Akuma or Cammy. Other than that, you know Capcom is going to release at bare minimum one more improved version of SFIV given their track record, so I really think these twelve or fourteen are all there will be for SFIV, and then the later installments will introduce more.

So the last two pieces fall into place for me. Now that Dhalsim, Chun Li, Zangief, Balrog, and Sagat are confirmed I am totally happy :) I would have been fine otherwise, but knowing that all of my favorite characters will be in it makes me happy.

I don't know. Ono already confirmed there were about 3 new female characters alone (One of which would be C. Viper). I know what you're saying, but I think it will be different this time mostly because they're really concerned with getting all of SF2 in there. I'd bet there are at least 5 new characters by the end (including Abel and C. Viper).

From the grainy ass blurry video's the animation and graphics look great, its cool to see another SF game but this shit feels like a rather half arsed effort from Capcom, all the characters look the same as they did in SF2, no subtle differences or nuances that would show over the passing of time i.e. slightly different outfits, or hairstyles. The new characters look boring as hell, extremely uninspired. It just feels like "SF2 3D with some extra fluff characters thrown in". Give me SFA 3 on the Dreamcast any day over this.

"Street Fighter IV already has twelve. I really doubt we're going to see any more aside from maybe Akuma or Cammy."

The thing is, twelve is really on the smaller side of selections, especially when it comes to arcade-style fighters.

If you want to compare with other 3-D fighters:
Dead or Alive has 22.
Soul Calibur had 24.
Virtua Fighter has 18. (and even this seems small when you look at other games.)

And then there's 2-D fighters:
Marvel Vs. Capcom had 56.
Guilty Gear has 26.

12 just doesn't cut it, in my book.

Well, if they want to have a balanced game, they need to have only a few choices to begin with. Street Fighter III had ten or so, it wasn't until the next revision that they added more.

Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 has the most unbalanced roster ever, and the pros only use the same 10 characters or so.

P.S. I think Guilty Gear only has 22 characters at the most in any game. If you counted the section on Wikipedia, note some characters are only playable in some version.

And on a side note, Sagat needs to be 300% times more beefier.

GuitarAtomik: Aha, but did he mean for SFIV or SFIV 2? *strokes chin*

Monco Vega: Agreed. They're almost the exact same in appearance (and so far, gameplay) as they were in SFII. I'm sure that since Ono's desperate to return Street Fighter to its former glory he wants the game to have as much appeal and similarity to SFII there can be (arguably to detrimental proportions).

TheDirtyHobo: Oh, don't get me wrong, I love huge character rosters (so long as they're balanced). But I'm drawing off what Capcom and previous SF games have done in the past. Maybe they'll break tradition and have a roster of twenty characters or so; but as they say, history is the best indicator for future behavior....

I'm a little worried about that too. That's why I really want to see some more new characters in there. Other wise it will feel like an extremely well polished 3D remake of SF2. I'd still play it (and enjoy it) but it wouldn't be worthy of being called the true Street Fighter 4.

True. True. I wouldn't put it past them, and they've already mentioned that the console versions could have extra characters. I'll stick to my prediction though. Well....4-5 new characters I'll say.

Also, I want to vent on the faces--they're absolutely horrifying! They're too damned goofy and are completely out of place. (Not to mention poor Chun-Li is so roided/muscular/butch now that her girly behavior is also out of place). And here's hoping they're not too caught up on SFII that they remember to include Chun-Li's kikoken (which wasn't in SFII).

(I use parentheses and SF# abbreviations way too much.)

Thank you Baron Calico, thank you. As much as I love the classic characters, the cast of characters is looking more like a SF2 redux and less like the proper sequel to the whole damn series. Also, NEEDS MORE LADIES. I don't want to play as sweaty, hulking men :-(

yea the Lariat is complete old school Zangief. It was his only defense against fireballs seeing his jump was crap.

Me guess Gouki will be either a Mid boss or return to his hidden boss state. Gouken either a mid boss or final boss, and as usual, a new character as a final boss.

Cause it's just not right to have a new game with a old boss. Save the Alpha series. (But technically, Alpha Boss bison was pretty fucking cheesy with his air unblockable psycho crusher super.)
