It goes without saying, we're all excited about Sonic's return-to-form in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4. For all of you folks who've put your head between your legs and chanted "Sega please don't screw this up" over and over again, never fear -- it definitely looks like an old-school Sonic game.
The confirmation comes by way of "leaked" footage posted by 1UP, taken from the Xbox 360 version of the title. The screens show off four zones (along with a single special stage) that will allegedly find their way to "Episode 1" -- Splash Hill, Lost Labyrinth, Casino Street, Mad Gear Zone.
The video shows off a game that looks like it could have been released in Sonic's Sega Genesis heyday... and that's a good thing, don't you think?
glad to see the original styling return. though i wonder how they are going to price this with it being episodic and all. would be great if there were a pay once option that would let you get all the episodes as they come.
I understand not everyone can afford a capture card, but they could have at least set the camcorder on a table or something. It looks like he was trying to hold the camera in one hand and play with the other.
I haven't heard anyone else mention this, but I think the backgrounds look really nice. To me they look (so far) exactly how the old backgrounds would look rendered in high definition. Unlike that new Rocket Knight game where the 3D backgrounds look like total shit. I will agree that the way sonic animates does look off though.
I agree with the animations concerns. His feet are moving too slow, he spins too slow when he jumps, and the constant dust clouds are annoying. If they can get the anims right, I will definitely purchase this.
That makes me want to die. His movement is so 'smooth', but in a bad way. It's like he somersaults instead of spins, and the running looks crap. I am disappoint.
Looks good so far. Hopefully they can tighten up some of the jankey collision detection that was at the end of the video though. Also glad to see Sonic has a better run animation than what was shown in the teaser.
@Birthmark Destructor: Either you're a furfag or you're a /b/tard. If you're against one side, you are on the other and in any case you have given up any chance to become a respectable member of society.
Birthmark Destructor: Incase you haven't noticed none of the "Sonic Cycle" signs have appeared yet besides the hype. I see no new furry friends, and the gameplay looks like the old Sonic games, and then there is the publisher who has been known to make good Sonic games.
I approve. It actually looks like momentum is a concern again instead of "FWOOOOOOOOOSH WATCH ME DEFY GRAVITY AND RUN UP THIS 90 DEGREE CLIFFSIDE AT A BRISK JOG!"
It still looks like it needs work but, then again, it's not finished yet so of course it does. Either way, combined with this video and the news that Dimps is making it, I think I'm willing to believe this'll actually be good.
It looks just like it used to back in the golden days =D
but although i like that, it's interesting that they stuck with the old genesis style. i was under the assumption would create a more modern, HD looking world while retaining the old gameplay mechanics. I thought that would have been a bit cooler, but I have no problem with this
Considering that Dimps is doing this, there is reason to hope. The speed is just right, Sonic 1-3 style. And anyone who thinks the classic Sonic games were simply about hold forward and watching thing go by super fast is a moron. Those games had a quick pace, but also 'slowed down' enough to allowed for exploration. What I just was spot on.
Sonic's movement still looks too fast to me with the floaty physics. What happened to the building momentum gameplay that they promised.
It's obviously a massive jump in the right direction though. It looks like a better version of the advance and rush games, but it still won't be as good as the original trilogy.
Don't get me wrong though. Yeah the advance and rush games weren't great, but they were bloody good.
Looks floaty as hell. And Sonic's practically standing horizontally at the end.
It really shouldn't be in alpha at this point. Game's coming out in the summer, and it really shouldn't be much work to copy paste the core game engine. Should be at least further along than this. But then again, these guys like to really pump out Sonic games.

THIS ISN'T SONIC WTF SEGA I HATE YOU.
I agree, the animation looks slow, but the level design is looking great.
The gameplay looks there, but the graphics are just... wrong.
They'll probably fix that, but this is looking good.
Was this that difficult to do, Sega?

Definately this^ Although, I wish they would have stuck with 2D instead of 2.5D, but whatever :/
Sorry, but whoever was playing the game there hadn't a clue.

And lets just leave Birthmark alone. Its pointless to argue with a fanboy of his level.

I'm still gonna pass.
