Pocket Gamer has gotten its hands on a confidential approval document for Sony's new PSP Minis service. According to the document, PSP Minis will have no quality assurance, meaning any game can get approved for sale so long as it works. This is quite different than Apple's App Store, where games are expected to meet certain standards before being allowed.
The document says that there is "no requirement for content approval" and that the process for getting a game on the PSP is "transparent, trackable and predictable." Developers can also set their own release dates. The only real requirement is that the game will download properly and be playable. After that, it appears any and all content will automatically be approved.
This can be seen as a case of Sony learning from Apple's mistakes, providing a downloadable gaming platform where any would-be developer has a chance to make his name and get some fresh content out there with little fuss. It's a great idea in theory, and one I fully support, but I hope that user ratings are in place to help weed out the bad games, and that Sony is prepared to weather a PR storm if something risqué comes to the platform. Something tells me that this free and easy approval process won't last beyond the first big controversy.
Those reservations aside, bring it on. PSP Minis is looking really promising to me right now and I have high expecations. Can't wait for Sony to find a way to let me down.

So it's quite similar to the App Store, except that instead of getting approved or rejected before being made available on the store, miniS that do not comply with these restrictions will be pulled after being made available on the store. :/
Personally, I think the App Store's approach makes the most sense, but it certainly has room for improvement. What Apple should do is a developer approval process whereby, after gaining a level of trust, the developer can submit updates to apps without pre-approval. Apple would still review the initial 1.0 version and any major new versions (2.0, 3.0, etc.), but most app updates are minor (1.1, 1.2, 2.1, etc.), so those could be let on without waiting in a queue.
Yes we have a higer chance of getting bad games on miniS but we also have a higher chance of getting good games.
With Apple's app Store, games are controlled to the nth degree meaning that sometimes the chaff comes before the wheat.
As usual some mook manages to put a negative spin on a Jim Sterling post.
I did not "spin" anything. I merely voiced a concern. I think it's great news, and if you look at my past PSP Minis post, you'll see I support the service and am looking forward to it and think the PSP is doing great. But of course, you don't want to accept that I actually *like* Sony products, because that would shatter your ability to whine and moan about anything I write.
Not having applesque draconian rulings is good, but I could submit furry rape pornography and call it "My first ABCs" and it wouldn't be denied?
Needless to say, DSiWare is going to get it's ass handed over on a platter. I'm not sure if this will be able to pass up Apple's AppStore (I doubt it), but we'll see what happens. Maybe the fact that the store is made purely for a gaming console will help bump up the quality of games. I won't be buying a PSP Go, so I'll never really get to experience that first hand...but best of luck guys. =P
Also, if someone is having to check that they at least work before they can be uploaded, I'm guessing there will be SOME level of QA going on. Even if it's just a self-rating system so people know if its E, T, M, AO or whatever rating system other countries have, I think the internet will end up sorting out the good from the bad and warning everyone of shit to avoid and stuff thats a must have.
That's just one example, of course, and taking it to extremes, but in a world where scrabble having "dirty" words in it causes a controvesy, this is just asking for trouble.
I agree. I try too hard to explain to morons that I don't have some weird and mysterious imagined agenda against the PS3 and PSP.
has XBL indie games NOT let you down? last time i checked 99.9% of the content was pointless crap. "extensive quality assurance" obviously does not assure quality.
Sony dropped a Betamax on Jim's puppy when he was 5. It's quite obvious.
Life must be easy when you can just invent agenda for people and then attack those, rather than the actual things that have been said.
I don't think The Path or The Graveyard would be approved by Sony or MS, and that's one of the reasons I love them.
Unless I am mistaken, yes, the Wii has a similar content approval process (or lack thereof as the case may be). As we have seen, that has opened the floodgates for quite literally anyone to get product out. On the downside, quite literally anyone can get product. On the other hand, I wouldn't expect PSP Minis to have the same air of distrust above them because while Wii games retail anywhere from $20 to $50, PSP Minis will cost just a few bucks. It's easier to forgive.
there is NO quality assurance there save for out right nudity and sex. here is a sample of the crap that is there: fish tank, another fish tank, yet another my fish tank, 3 "massagers", roll cage viewer (not really a game at all)
sterling has a point and a lot of people are going to get suckered in to buying pointless crap.
you might as well pull out that framed portrait of kaz hirai while you're at it
sput* sput* sput*
That image isn't going to leave my head for a long time. Thanks Jim.
Personally, I think that having two seperate sections for Apps and games could be useful.
Of course, they have the user rating system working pretty well, so if Sony sets that up too, I think this PSP Mini service could work just as well.
Also, a nice hearty 'LOL' at the anti-Jim fanboys in this thread. I can't believe you're able to pick out anything negative here. Hilarious.
As in: Sony Compmuter Entertainment EUROPE. (That last work is the crucial bit.)
I think 'corporate' is saying 'we don't case as long as PSPGo content is downloadable and plays', while giving the regionals the right to ban specific content. (All corporate cares about is download ability and playability.)
Seriously.. it's just like always, japan gets cool stuff, and Amercia and Europe get fucked over by regional nannies. (And Australia takes it doublehard.)
