I hate when Destructoid hits full-on troll mode like this. By this logic, any game in a given genre is a clone of its originator. Platfomers? All clones of Mario. FPS? Clones of Doom. RPGs? Clones of Wizardry or whatever.
I mean, Jesus. Is this an unfunny joke? There is enough setting this game apart from Layton that it is not merely a clone. There is dungeon exploration and a combat system. Do I need to remind you that some of the best games of all time are not anything drastic? Super Meat Boy has no original ideas but that doesn't stop it from being a damn fine refinement of the genre's concepts. I could list MANY more examples of how well-done games simply toy with a genre's conventions to a tiny degree and make it their own, but hey... if you're a gaming journalist and somehow don't already know this, then you don't really deserve your job.

If there is a gameplay style I'm OK with having more of, it's definitely the Layton kind.

At least Konami releases all their games here. I mean they even released Elebits: The Adventures of Kai and Zero here, even though nobody has even heard of it, much less played it.

Yeah, I don't think I ever once said being a clone is a BAD thing. I've played a lot of really good copycats (and as many if not more poor ones, but that goes without saying).

I dunno, it definitely looks like Layton to me. But as long as the plot doesn't suck, the characters aren't bland, and the puzzles are good, I could care less. Bring it, Konami.
There are four Layton games and one movie which were released in Japan neons ago that still need to be localized. WHERE THE F*** ARE THEY ಠ_ಠ
...Oh and yeah Doctor Lautrec is a rip-off down to Prof. Layton's color scheme (brownish coat and top hat with a red stripe? c'mon Konami), but hey it's only similar in some points and the gameplay looks different, so as long as it's entertaining I'm getting it.

@casesomething I just realized that in my uncontrollable rage I said four layton games AND a movie while I was taking into account all of them together plus the layton vs Phoenix while mistakenly saying some were already out, but you know instead of being a total dick I'd politely point it out. Just saying.
I'm amazed there's not already some Layton vs Lautrec artwork out there already. We need to see these two duking it out, Queensbury Rules style.
I might end up checking it out, but it is definitely a Layton clone. Similar name, same profession, same top hat and over coat, similar art style, both have a young assistant, similar game play style, same time period in Europe (except in France instead of England)
