Lawyers sent out for removal of 'PS3 slim' images photo

Who knows if the "leaked" images of the slim PS3 are real or not? They didn't look very real to us. Or maybe it was a different one. We keep hearing about a slim PS3. Regardless, someone doesn't want us looking at them.

Someone called in the lawyer attack dogs (à la Call of Duty: World at War) and sent them to website Spong.  Taiwan-based lawyers asked the site to remove images and a story named 'New Slim PlayStation 3 Pix Torn Down,' which they ran late last week. They were also asked to keep quiet on the request, which they did not.

Here's an excerpt from the lawyer's request:

As appointed by our client, we hereby inform you that the web pages on your website contain some of our client's confidential documents and photos, which were highly possibly illegally released and posted.

...please immediately remove those pages and keep our request confidential.

If those images were fake, then why would someone sic lawyers on them to remove content? Remember that on the internet, anything could be fake. Even this letter.

[Update: Engadget also got one of these letters.]

If that is, in fact, the new PS3 model then (from what I've seen of the leaked images) I think I'll stick with my original style PS3.

as someone who's been looking for the right opportunity to pick up a PS3, the caption posts here (and everywhere else on the internet) about the possibility of a slim PS3 intrigued me. but when I saw the images, I instantly lost all hope because they look terrible as far as realism goes. so, I gave up. however, this new development adds another layer to the cake - why bother to pay for lawyer's services if the images/story was faked? and the lawyer's statement says that the images/story were "highly possibly illegally released" - which means that sony has to hold a patent on it for it to actually be illegal. and that begs the question of why a company would hold a patent for something that doesn't exist.

INTERESTING.....!

Why would it be from a Chinese company? Sony isn't chinese, and the web site isn't chinese, so chinese lawyers seems a bit out of place. Moreover, if it was an actual sony rep, it'd be a No Comment, just like every other piece of rumor. My guess is that it's a fake, and the company making the rippoffs is sending out these 'lawyery' sounding (but not actual law-speak) letters to try and stop the publicity. Seriously, "highly possibly illegally released"...

Maybe Sony should stop paying so many lawyers and then they could stop losing so much money!

"Highly possibly"? seriously?

So incredibly fake.

And "the web pages on your web site" sounds awfully redundant.

Not even mentioning the ridiculous letter from the lawyer, look at the two pictures of the "slim PS3." Notice anything? They are completely different machines! The title picture which shows the "slim PS3" on the box looks similar to the current PS3 in the way that it has the small board below the disc drive (where the touch-sensitive buttons are).

But, if you look at the other picture included in the gallery, you see that it is lacking this button board thing. Why would Sony have two different models of the "slim PS3" already, both of which look horrible?

the sad thing is they BETTER do a minimized version because there is a very low percentage of people buying their system. 200 bucks would be competitive enough.

Preach on. If Sony released an affordable PS3 Lite without Blu-ray or the extra ports, so many people would buy it day one. They're just stubborn about "every PS3 having to be cutting edge Blu-Ray!!!OMG!!!"

if that pic were real then it would be interesting not just cuz of the slim model, but the whole re-branding of the PS3 without the spiderman text which sucked monkey nuts. IMO that rebranding its pretty slick.

Well if it is real, I bet Sony are bricking it now due to the fact that everyone seems to think it looks like a piece of shit.
Forthcoming Sony statement: "We said we weren't planning a slim PS3, when really we were. But now we're definitely not... bastards."

One reason is that there are Trademarks for a reason.

The trade mark is to assure customers that they're getting Sony (in this case) products. A good reason to remove them is to avoid any confusion, and rightfully so. There were more than a few people who were instantly interested in getting a PS3 once they saw those images - The last thing Sony need is another "When will you do this?" grudge (like price reduction, backwards compatibility), based on a product that doesn't even exist.

Either that or the site that posted the pics were told to remove them, and they're just making something up to make it that much more believable.

The games are on blu-ray, if they release a blu-ray less PS3 it wouldn't work. Its safe to say blu-ray isn't optional at this point.

Besides blu-ray is replacing dvd, is being studied and improved everyday, and is the reason games like MGS4 even exist, why on earth would they give that up?

And don't believe that low percentage of people are buying it crap, only those truly straped for cash or those who happen to be in the center of the recession(AKA America) seem to be having issues.

The reason they haven't lowered it is because the rest of planet earth seems fine with it.

I meant without a blu-ray disc player/capabilities. It would only be a small downgrade (to not include the software to run them), but it's something to cut costs. And yes, it's not outselling anything comparable to it (Xbox, Wii, DS), so I do say it's sales are low, but they are not suffering.
