Law & Order: SVU loves gamers

Law & Order: SVU loves gamers photo

Last Sunday, Law and Order: SVU aired an episode called "Avatar", which featured a Second Life-like game called Another Youniverse. In the episode, the detectives search for a missing woman who spent time playing out her sexual fantasies online in the game. They soon learn that another player had kidnapped her because her avatar looks like a 15-year-old girl that he raped and kidnapped in his youth and he wanted to relive that experience.

It’s not surprising that Law and Order has used videogames as a central theme in their plots. A lot of different movies and TV shows have included videogames in their story lines which is not surprising since technology has taken a front seat role in our society and it allows for new plots and new ways to strike fear into the hearts of the viewing public. Internet stalkers, videogame killers and cyber terrorists are just a few of the personalities that shows like CSI, Law and Order and other crime shows are using to boost their ratings and form new plots.

I like that crime dramas are opening their character and plot ideas to the world of videogames, but some are doing better than others in regards to realistic storylines. This Law and Order: SVU episode, "Avatar", had a great plot line but had a few errors that any gamer would catch, such as a user creating a mod in-game that the creator of the game couldn’t delete or hack around it. I don’t think a game’s creator won’t be able to fix any unwanted mods in his own game. Just seems weird.

There are some other issues that seemed improbable at the time but could be easily explained if you are familiar with Second Life. For example, the kidnapper decides to go after victim based on the looks of her avatar and as we all know, games like World of Warcraft and Second Life only offer so many variations of the avatars which would make you wonder, why did he only go after the one player with that avatar? The answer is simple if you think about it.

The likelihood of the kidnapper only wanting one player with that specific avatar is hard to believe, but if you take into consideration that her avatar could be the only one offering sexual fantasies with an underage avatar to other users, then you can understand why the kidnapper chooses to go after that player specifically. Her actions played to his fantasies and his need to relive his previous raping.

From a moral standpoint, Law and Order: SVU has gone the informed route with their videogame episodes by not blaming the actions of the players on the games themselves. "Avatar" clearly shows that the kidnapper had previously kidnapped and raped a teenage girl long before he touched the videogame, and the game was only a device for finding his new victim. They at no point blame the videogame for his actions.

The other Law and Order: SVU videogame episode, "Game", actually defended the whole “videogames aren’t the cause of violence” issue. The episode featured a Grand Theft Auto 3 type game that has scenes and game play similar to the murder of a woman in the real world. In the end, the killers claimed they believed they were still in the game when they killed the victim and that they couldn’t tell the difference between the real world and the game any more. The ADA argues that if the jury finds the killers not guilty, then every killer in the world will be able to use the “video games made me do it” excuse. She then goes on to argue that everyone is responsible for their actions in the end and no amount of violent videogames can change that.

Can I just say… Best. Episode. Ever!

Sure, not every TV show is as smart as Law and Order. CSI: Miami ran an episode called "Urban Hellraisers", where gamers are reenacting levels from a videogame much like Grand Theft Auto 3 in order to win money from the game’s creator. This episode shows the game industry in a bad light by portraying a game designer as a money hungry criminal who will do anything to sell his game -- even make gamers into real killers for publicity.

The writers at CSI: Miami seem to relying on close-minded opinions and the general fear of the public to write their scripts. From terrorists to videogame killers, they’re writing about what soccer moms believe is a threat to their children, and it’s ignorant of them to do so. Law & Order: SVU has shown in many of their episodes to place the blame where blame is ,due and that justice isn’t always black and white; that there can be grey areas.

In one episode, a teenage boy murders his younger brother after his mother manipulates him into thinking that it’s the best way to save his brother from the abuse he’ll deal with in a foster home. In the end, the mother is put on trial for her actions and the son is released into the custody of his older, estranged brother. Murder isn’t always as clear cut as he did it, so he’s guilty and deserves to rot in jail. Law and Order shows that quite well in their stories.

I’ve actual become a huge fan of this specific Law and Order spin off due to its open-minded writing. The show’s characters are written like real human beings with morals and thoughts of their own. Viewers can really relate to them and that makes for great TV.

so would the dude kidnap the woman should she turn out to be an 30 year old obese man playing out bisexual fantasies as an underage girl?

yeah, I thought so....

I actually watched this episode and like all good stalkers he found a way to confirm that it was a woman and not an obese man.

It goes to show, if TV writers think people use it or watch it, they will rip it off.

Well....
1: SVU is probably the best in the Law and Order series, imho.
2: I actually remember all the episodes you are talking about ><
3: What really gets me about these shows and their 'very special' episodes about videogames is how they inaccurately emulate the games they're basing the episode on. For instance, I recall in the episode "Game" you could rip off the shirt of the lady you were killing. I seriously don't remember being able to do that in any of the GTA's (maybe I'm just that oblivious =P). I also don't recall being able to rape a lady in the bank as a bonus level, as displayed by the episode "Urban Hellraisers".

I have this episode on my DVR, but I haven't watched it yet. I should have stopped reading this article after the first sentence, but I couldn't help myself. Nice write up! My wife got me into SVU a few years ago, and I've grown to love it. It has way better writing and acting than other crime shows, IMO.

It's so rare to see games and gamers accurately depicted in other media, something that often drives me nuts. You'd think movie and TV writing teams would always have at least one gamer in their ranks, but apparently not.

And here's a mind-bender. I'd have to agree with the CSI comment, they do write their material to appeal to a soccer mom audience. And, it's true, I know too many voting adults who'll vote based off of what they see in a fictional television show.

But with all this debate about video games and their influence on children; with so many "professionals" claiming it's the industry's responsibility to censor their content so as not to corrupt "impressionable youth," wouldn't it be a switching of roles to say that CSI is manipulating and preying on adults, and they should be responsible for their influence on "impressionable' soccer moms?

And I love Law and Order for the same reason. Good article!

Wow, I'm surprised this post went so easy on the episode. Other sites were far more harsh on "Avatar." Getting soft, eh, Dtoid? ;)

If only Second Life really was like that. That's one online community that could use some culling.
Though, if they really wanted to be realistic, the target would've been a furry and the killer someone enraged by the stupidity of the game he was using to find victims.

SCU is the best of the 3 L&Os, though sometimes hard to watch. Some of the best writing and actors.

Also, Ice-T.

yay SVU! and yeah, the "Avitar" episode used video games as a plot device, not really commenting on the video game issue itself, which i liked. unlike CSI. ugh.

CSI: Miami has always sucked. ALWAYS. L&O: SVU is generally pretty decent though.

Law and Order/svu/ci are all 8000% better than CSI: Miami. The writing is awful, the characters are about as shallow as the pool of urine on my uncle's bathroom floor, and I love how every 2 minutes, theres a long ass scene of nothing but vista shots. Miami doesn't look THAT DAMN GOOD! Idiots.. The original CSI is boss though. Never watched CSI: NY.

Yeah...I refuse to watch any CSI other than the original. Except for the intros because of the music.

"Avatar" sucked ass. The plot went nowhere at first, then there were more twists and turns than an episode of family guy. The SL aspect of the show looked like it was shoehorned in, and it felt gimmicky. Overall it was the worst SVU episode I've ever seen. No more TV shows exploiting games for the sake of exploiting games plz.

By the way I believe they used IMVU to do the machinima scenes for SVU.

I was hoping you'd give a nod to that CSI: Miami episode. Mostly because David Caruso is the king of all that is badass in this world. Also, because of that guy they got to play through it looking for the next crime (Wolf, I think his name was). Did anyone else find it kind of odd that it took him days of non stop playing to make it through 2 or 3 GTAesque missions?

Boston Legal is the best law show on TV. Just thought I'd throw that out there. :)

Good read. I enjoyed the episode, though I would have described it a bit differently. I think many gamers can be a little sensitive when it comes to anything other than the "video games = flowers and fun times" portrayal. Lets face it, six or seven years ago gamers were still frowned upon as social outcasts, but we've come a thousand miles since then. Like it or not, there are some creeps taking our favorite past time to bizarre levels. And though it's still a hot button for most of us at some point, we don't have to worry as much about the image portrayed on television since we (gamers) are still growing exponentially and are creating the modern image of the industry and it's customers. Cool beans.

I love the original Law and Order as well as SVU, but I can’t watch them in my room (in HD) like I did last year, because I don’t get the digital TV reception in my new dorm...bah.

Law and Order has only just recently been on my 'must-view' schedule (the original, not SVU), and I like the way these two shows are handled. It always seems to be more of a morality play of near-highest quality.

Btw, I don't like the opening credits to LAO:Trial By Jury. Just too cheesy.

And Richard Belzer was good in Homicide. :oD
