Launch day Xbox 360s no longer under three-year warranty coverage photo

An anonymous e-mail hit the tips line earlier today and after placing a call with Microsoft’s technical support, we can confirm that starting February 2, all launch day Xbox 360s will no longer be covered by Microsoft’s three-year extended warranty. The warranty should have technically ended at the end of September last year, as I was told by the technical support agent.

If you’re unfortunate enough to own a launch version of the Xbox 360 and need to send it in for repairs after February 2, you’ll have two options available to you. You can either call Xbox’s support line and get the unit fixed for $119, or you can just go to Xbox’s online support page and get the unit fixed for $99, saving yourself $20.

It looks like Microsoft is attempting to cut the amount of calls they get by giving customers a “discount” by having them go through the online page. You pretty much have today and tomorrow to claim your launch Xbox 360 broken due to the Red Rings of Death to avoid paying the fee.

While we’re on the subject, how many Xbox 360s have you all gone through? I’ve gone through two so far. My first Xbox 360 (that I got shortly before Halo 3 was released) audio output died.

seriously people.. i have never had to replace any console!? I have been through many controllers and replaced a few games. but, what the hell are you guys doing?! yeah, so the 360 is a cheap shit console. i could understand replacing it and buying a second. But, to buy 3 or more.. your fucking nuts!

I hear people complaining about the PS2 also. But, i have never known one a chunky to go wrong. Only the slim version and hey, we cant say that we weren't warned.

Also, I would like to know how many PS3's have been replaced? I have had mine just over a year and luckily no problems. i heard the Blu-Ray drive had a problem on the earlier models. anybody had to replace one yet? I have the shiny front 60gb n seems all good

Man, I'm on box #6 right now, and it's looking like I'm just about to suffer through another RROD in a couple of weeks based on how my 360 keeps on freezing at loading screens and giving me E71 errors every once in awhile. So far, I've had four RRODs and two faulty disk drives.

But that dude who's gone through 11?? Sheesh.

I got my 360 on day one and had to send it in within a couple weeks due to a faulty disc drive. They sent me a new unit instead of the original. Just earlier this month I finally suffered an actual RRoD and sent her in again, and again I got a different console back. Here's hoping this one last through the rest of this gen, but it's doubtful.

With the rate that these things die MS damn well better fix their point of view on backwards compatibility for the 360's successor. Otherwise who knows how many of our current Xbox games any of us will get to keep playing in five to ten years...

First had DVD drive failure, second had network card failure. No RRoD for me, I had "specific" hardware failure.

I bought a Jasper unit a few weeks ago. If it RRoD's even once I'm returning for a full refund. I'm not going to play the game like everyone else.

Honestly, If my launch 360 hadn't RRoD'd by now... I probably would have smothered it with a pillow to prematurely euthanize the thing... and then send it in to have it spruced up by Microsoft for $0.

My heart goes out to anybodies launch 360 that Red Rings the next couple days.

Still on my first. From all the other posts, it seems I'm quite lucky. It's a Japanese 360 so maybe they have better parts for them! Got it in Nov 2006 for the Gears 1 launch.

I'm on number two, but I've never RROD'd. The first console i bought just froze after awhile. Never figured out if it was overheating or just a plain old bricked console. Either way, I'm still going strong through eight hour netflix marathons and Left 4 Dead nights.

The games and online service may be good....but really, is it really worth it to buy hardware that has an expected shelf life measured in days?

Seriously, I've -never- been interested in buying a 360 for the reason that when I buy something, I would like it to be operational even after the unit is discontinued. What are the odds a 360 will be?

I still have my NES, my SNES, my Genesis, Gamecube, PS1, PS2 and Dreamcast running flawlessly. How many of you will be able to say that about your 360s?

Ah well, it's your money and I'm sure many of you don't really care about yesterday's games(which is fine). I won't go all preachy. It just amazes me that gamers seem to have given this lemon architecture a pass.

I had a near-launch 360 (December '05) that lasted me for about 2.5 years. The infamous red rings started, and after having to send in to Microsoft twice they finally sent me a brand new system. Since then, no problems.

I have to say, by the way...despite all the shit Microsoft gets for the red ring problem, the way they handled me and my broken system was very impressive. The red ring issue has never really tainted my overall impression of the company.

I just got unlucky with mine.

1st was scratching up discs, lasted a week.
2nd lasted 3 months, red rings.
3rd lasted 12 hours, was scratching up discs.
4th lasted a year and a half, E74 error(dead graphics chip)
5th is the one I have now but the disc tray is making odd sounds.

I've been contemplating selling it but there's still a few things I want and my ample arcade game collection, that and my brother likes Tomb Raider so meh.

I actually sold every single 360 game I owned and bought a PS2 again along with Persona 4, best investment ever, I've rebuilt my collection since and I'm loving it, I don't even miss the 360.

I'm on number 6.

First console lasted a bit more than a year. It red-ringed. Got a new one for free, after waiting just over a month. #2 red-ringed. Sent it in, got a new one for free in about two weeks.

#2 died after a couple months. Sent it in for free and got a refurb. It died the night I got it back. #4 died after some time, due to a cd reading error. The console still worked, but it wouldnt read discs. #5 cost $50 to obtain. It lasted for a good while as well, but when I moved in November (back into my dad's basement, after breaking up with my fiance and losing my "investment accountant" job in the same week... thanks a lot Compassion Act) I set up my rig and it died instantly.

Due to the circumstances - i.e. I needed something to keep my mind off of the shit that my life had become - I couldn't wait to have #5 refurbed so I sold half of my collection and bought an Arcade sku.

So far it still works and because I'm broke as a joke, #5 has been resting in peace in my closet, until I can find a new job.

So yeah, 6. Regardless, I have no interest in any system except for my beloved X360. For better or for worse.

When you have your 360 replaced by MS (under warranty) they give you a new warranty, so the only people affected by this will be people who have a launch box and who have never had their box replaced by MS.

Still, the RROD sucks.

At the same time, having lived with LIVE for 3 years, I don't think the PS3 could satisfy my online needs (I can't even chat with friends on a PS3). It's the catch-22 of this generation.

I'd rather just buy a core system. this way it works and you can be playing again within an hour unless you live in the sticks 3 hours from anywhere... in which case how do you even have internet? XD

Also i'm on my 3rd but somewhere down the line I have a second premium in reserve.

I've had only 1 console go red ring on me, but have had two be sent in for repairs. The first one was a disc drive problem and the second was a video problem. Even though I had the extended warranty, MS didn't want to honor it (and to make a long stroy short) I threatened legal action and voila they sent me a certificate for a brand new console while they repaired the broken one.

I'm on #0... sorry.

So yeah, I've always leaned on the shoulder of Sony, but I'm not here to hate. I'm more a console neutralist (for the most part), and there are plenty of games 360 have that I wish PS3 did... plus I would love to be on live to improve my SF2 HD Turbo Remix skills since PSN hardly has anyone playing on it most times.

But since no matter where I look, there are too many horrible RROD stories while Sony has been faithful to me since day 1 PS1, and add that to them having more of a library that suits me and m schedule, I can't see myself shelling out money and hard times for console after console. Just me though... you guys are brave brave folks.

Still on my first console from a few weeks after launch. The day the original 1 year warranty ran out, in fear of the RROD, I ripped her open, replaced the fans and cut away all the fan grills at the back. While I was in there I rubber mounted the drive and added some noise damping foam. About a week after I did it they announced the 3 year warranty >_<

Still, It's been used a ton and I can count the times it's crashed on one hand. And it only makes a tiny bit more noise than the current version.
