Yeah, so I get it, we talk about Lady Gaga a lot on Destructoid. What can we say? We're fans.
But at least now we're warranted. Four of her tracks are hitting the Rock Band store this week, and now this -- her latest video for her single "Telephone" features a direct reference to Electronic Arts' Command and Conquer games.
Trying to explain to you what's going on in the video would be futile -- it must be seen to be believed, and it should noted that it's not safe for work. Long story short, Lady Gaga and Beyonce poison Tyrese Gibson with a homemade concoction which includes "Tiberium," the rare mineral that stands as a central plot point of Command and Conquer franchise.
Pretty neat, right? It was spotted by MTV who notes that the video is littered with pop culture references (another ingredient in the poison is "meta-cyanide," made famous by David Lynch's Dune, for instance). As if you need a reason to watch the video again.
And if you haven't already seen it, it's after the jump. Again, not safe for work.
Yeah I absolutely love the video. The gaming reference threw me back a bit since I didn't expect it. I really love her music. Even with @Ganjookie making an incorrect statement about the quality of her music, I'll be glad to say I love her sound =)
Fex-M3 is a reference to the Star Wars expanded universe.
Meta-cyanide is a reference to Dune.
I freaking LOVE this video. I'm usually an alternative rock guy (save for my collection of video game music), but GaGa's pop has totally got me in its iron grip. Girl is weird and whacky in a way that isn't really like anyone else out there. Plus I think there's something in her music that's specifically designed to go after the genetics of gay men. :D
Best lines of the video:
Beyonce: "GaGa, trust is like a mirror. You can fix it if it's broke."
GaGa: "But you can still see the crack in that mother-@#$@'s reflection."
i bet she thought she was making up a word. and it has nothing to do with C&C.
music sucks, she cant dance, and she looks like amy winohouse.
and why was this video not safe for work? or even rumored to be banned from tv?? i saw nothing bad thats not seen or show elsewhere on this site or tv. oh no a blurred out vagina. maybe it was the horrible acting, or the ridiculous beer can hairdo
You guys make it sound like Lady Gaga took some sort of executive decision to include Tiberium and meta-cyanide on that recipe list when its more like a cool reference from whoever edited, driected or wrote the script.
Star Trek writers would insert TECHNOBABBLE as a placeholder in the script for the fictional technical details of a conversation. My money is on an art director handing this off to an artist and saying 'we need a graphic for this part of the video. fill it in'.
Also, you know, I don't really care that gaga means stupid in Filipino to be completely honest.
Hmm, according to MTV there are One Piece references in it as well. I'd like to think that Lady Gaga is actually one of us, and likes these geeky things.. and given that is a far cooler idea then the probable reality that an art director slipped it in, I'm going to have that as my truth now.
Also, Lady Gaga is the best thing to happen to music in the past ten years.
I'll go out on a limb and say that in 2 years, hopefully sooner, we won't be talking about this attention whore anymore. God I wish that day could be tomorrow.
Also I think the phrase "also cocks" applies here too.
Did she sing it or did the director of the video just put those terms in the video? Also, does she sing about her fried egg titties? I lub me some eggs
@Uzzy
According to several interviews including a nice 60 Minutes interview it wouldn't surprise me at all.
If GaGa went back to being less popular I wonder if people would still be such a bitch everytime her name comes up. Geez. What is it about pop culture that just puts the fire into people? Is it because we're all too cool or too nerdy or both?
I have a love/hate relationship with Lady GaGa. She has an undeniable knack for writing catchy music, and there's honestly some measure of thought AND sincerity in her whole "Haus of GaGa" pseudo-intellectual artistic/philosophical babble. On paper, it's quite impressive (and sometimes for a couple of songs it all falls into place).
Unfortunately, unlike her "influences" (David Bowie, Queen, even Grace Jones and Elton John) she doesn't have nearly enough charismatic flamboyant flair to consistently bring it all together. As a result, more often than not stuff like _Telephone_ are the result: "R&B, but wearing a dumb hat"*
(*credit to a review I read somewhere of her music)
I do think people wouldn't care as much if she were less popular. I don't really like her "deal" but I recognize that enough people do so that it "mostly" doesn't bother me that she's as famous as she is. However, personally, the one thing about her (and a lot of popular musical acts) that bugs me, is they are actively drawing recognition away from more skilled but less "trendy" musicians. I'm not saying that she has no talent (she's an unparalleled performance artist), but I would humbly suggest that her "style" has more to do with her fame than her music. I think that's what bothers people about a lot of pop acts and she sort of exemplifies that right now (to certain people).
@RichardBlaind
Yeah I guess. Then again you can make the argument that GaGa can be the gateway drug into talented acts with less popularity.
Not everyone can be famous. There comes a point where the listener is responsible for finding the musician. As much of a valid point as that is that's my answer to that. Not everyone can be famous. Shit GaGa was one of those talented but not famous people for a long ass time.
I find it interesting that people think Lady Gaga's sexual ambiguity is a legitimate thing to use to criticize her as a musician. A bit like making fun of journalists you don't like because they're fat, if you ask me.
@Poe
While I don't think they're being serious one of the sad results of our modern day culture is people put an emphasis on the musician and use that to critique the music instead critiquing the music on it's own merit.

Where have you been? Before the day she was announced for Rock Band I had never seen a more consistently positive thread.

LET'S MAKE A SANDWICH
HER HAIR LOOKS LIKE A TELEPHONE!
GaGa approves.
I just don't get pop music...
Why do people like music you don't like? Others peoples taste are so clearly inferior! I don't get difference of opinion.

I agree with you

That product placement was cringe worthy.'
It was done that way on purpose.
Most kids into that are NOT happy, and it's hilarious.

I just wish she was smarter, is all.

Umm.... watch the start of the video.
Also, this exact same story was posted on Destructoid about 2 days ago.
