The above clip is the latest in Microsoft's line of "Believe" ads for their mega smash hit Halo 3. Regardless of your feelings on the actual game, you have to admit the ads have been up there with similar output from Budweiser, Nike and other such companies notorious for shelling out millions for thirty second spots people spend hours talking about at their respective water coolers.

Of course, this latest ad kinda, sorta lets slip the bombshell that the Master Chief dies during the events of Halo 3. Of course, there's the ever-present air of mystery surrounding his passing -- as there's no corpse -- and like a similarly revered gentleman whose corpse miraculously vanished postmortem there are certain very powerful entities at work intent on ensuring that the Chief won't be gone for long.

Personally, I give him about three days. I call dibs on poking any spear holes.

Oh Jesus, let the man RIP Microsoft. Let the man RIP. By the way I find all the Halo 3 commercials kinda offensive towards real Heros.

I am not a Halo fan and even I know Master Chief actually lives in the end. Beat the game on the hardest difficulty and sit through the credits. You learn these things when your bro commandeers your 360.

I really like the idea behind the "Believe" ad campaign, but gaht damn I wish the acting/writing in these little interviews wasn't so miserable. One uninspired, flatly-delivered cliche after another.

@sunami88 Didn't one use a REAL WW2 vet in the commercial, looking toward Master Chief or thinking about the Halo whatever event, as if it really happened paralleling it to WW2?

Yeah, I don't really get this, because Master Chief didn't die at the end of Halo 3. In fact, I don't really get why they tell you he did but then they tell you he didn't. They will have to write another novel I guess.

Really, Volomon?

How is that insulting? It's a fiction thing, you know? It's not meant to downplay or insult anyone, and if you are insulted, go somewhere you walking, talking, vagina. Seriously.

How could you be so damned sensitive? Did the Resident Evil trailer insult you too?

Screw you too douche. The whole point is that WW2 wasn't fiction and that Halo is, thats the whole freaking point. Why bother comparing them, why else get a fucking WW2 vet? Dipshit.

That ain't offensive. Pff. I rather like them, or at least, what I see here. When I see these the one ad from this line on TV that I've seen so far, it's cut down to nothing but still shots of a fight, some dramatic light piano, and Master Chief looking up, then "Believe".

You know, even if this WAS designed to compare the fight with the aliens to WW2, and give that sort of feeling, I don't really see how that is offensive, considering we've got a few dozen WW2 set games, and even more books and movies and literally tons of various fiction set in WW2.

i usually don't find anything offensive but to be using a made-up experience to mirror how war veterans revere their hallowed battle grounds pisses me off just a tad.

/i will be the grouchy old vet one day throwing my cane at the tv screen.

Does anyone else notice that these commercials, which are, in my opinion, fucking amazing by the way, have absolutely shit all to do with the storyline?

Oh, and Volomon, I do slightly sympathize with you, but not too too much. I read that article, and it brought up some valid points. What I did not see though, was any mention that it was an actual WW2 vet in the ad. I also couldn't find any mention anywhere on these internets of actual vets in any of the adds. I'm not trying to be insulting at all, so don't take it the wrong way if it seems that way, things affect everyone differently, and I can see how these ads may rub people the wrong way. But, it does mention in one of the ads that the importance of this monument was that it wasn't showing a conflict of man against man, it was showing man's ultimate unity, and survival. Now that I'm finished discussing the philosophy behind Halo ads, I'm gonna cry myself to sleep.

there's nothing offensive here. it seems to me that a few of you are just grasping at straws trying to come up with something negative. you can draw parallels all day long to tons of scifi and real world conflict, of all genres, mediums, and tones. the fact that the ads draw on similar themes and feelings only shows the dedication and wit behind them, it doesn't delineate from any real world war hero in the least. you guys are acting like the ads are coming out and saying "you thought WW2 was shit, check the chief out." that's just not the case.

Actually, you can see that Master Chief survived on any difficulty, if you sit through the credits.

And if you think the there's a parallel between WW2 and Halo that offends you, what about the buttfuck amount of WW2 fps's?

I don't see anything wrong with these Ads. That link is just one dude's opinion. Remember this is a game. A game can never represent the hells of war. I don't think games ever will. This ad is just for a game about a humans in the future fighting aliens that are trying to wipe them out.

Haven't played through or seen any spoilers yet, but I don't really care what happens to "guy in a helmet". He's barely even a character, more of just an avatar you choose by default.

Haha, people get annoyed when a old veteran guy talks about the Master Chief just because WW2 was real and Halo is not? You know any guy can be an old veteran and there's veterans being pumped out all the time? ;)

But ok, I'm sure it would've been such a more succesful campaign if they used a bearded American muslim of Arabic descent to play the Fallujah veteran. So much more useful than hooking into the Greatest Generation.

This ad was strategically placed to get everyone in an uproar, so that we all assume that Cheif didn't die at the end of Halo3. Guess what...

He probably did.

Even if it was a WWII vet (which I doubt), how is this any more offensive than a Medal of Honor game or the like?

"Let the man RIP"? Why? He's not dead.

How is this anymore offensive than Medal of Honor, or any of the games based on actual, real wars where real men died? To be offended by these Halo commercials, is to be retarded. I'm sorry, but it's true. If this bothers you, then you may as well say that there should never be any fictional depictions of fictional wars and fictional soldiers EVER.

These are tastefully-done commercials. The "veterans" they depict are portrayed as being distinguished, heroic gentlemen who are still touched and affected, both positively and negatively, by their wartime experiences. How is that offensive?

Nah. You've got people saying he's dead, you've got (smart) people (like me) saying he's not dead. Just watch through the end credits, and maybe you'll see the confusion.

Besides, did you honestly not think he'd probably die? My prerelease predictions were far worse than what we got.

Really, I only think Bungie knows if Chief died or not. I beat the game, I sat through the credits and I saw the real ending and I am still not sure. He went to sleep in some kind of time capsule...well then what? Halo 4? Maybe the "trilogy" doesnt end here

Since we're fully immersed in spoiler talk here, I'm just going to speak freely. Keep in mind that the Chief got into a "cryo chamber" - the same sort he came out of in the beginning of Halo 1. These tubes keep them frozen and, thus, could theoretically preserve the Chief for quite a long time, basically extending his lifespan. The only "threat" is that the power in the back half of Forward Unto Dawn (the ship) would give out and he'd wake up, but I assume that Cortana would be ensuring his safety.

So, yes, the Chief is alive. However, based on the quasi-canonical Believe commercials, one must assume that neither the humans nor the Elites find his ship for, at least, 30-or-so years. It seems likely that they'll end up touching down on the planet they're drifting towards, seen in the Legendary ending.
