So they not only locked out the cards, but any future updates to said cards? Damn that's one hell of an effective lockout.
I'd be alright with this if the virtual console selection included gba games. I dont own a flashcard, but it's the only way to play them on 3ds right now.
Well, I'm sure most people that use flashcards do it solely for pirated games, but I'm sure 1 or 2 people out there use it for 'legit' stuff...
Yeah Floppy all the legit DS games should still work.
My random guess is that when the systems initialize the carts they probably do a memory check on them to see how much storage is available on the cart. Normal DS games probably have just enough or slightly more than the game itself takes up. Where as the unlicensed carts probably have significantly more pushing into the GB range.

the main reason here they are winning is because A the flashcards have one part of them not rewritable except the supercard ds2 and 2 they are not really selling enough to support them anymore which really is the main reason Nintendo is winning here on all but the best, most feature rich flashcard.
By normal I mean I would be surprised if a legit DS game takes up more than 500mb so if the memcheck turned up something like 32gb that would be an easy indication that the cart in the slot was in no way a licensed Nintendo Product. Of course that is just random speculation.
This will suck for those who have legitimate uses or their 3DS flashcards, but frankly the grand majority besides are just pirating because that can't just save up, wait for sales, or otherwise trim the money little by little elsewhere from their budget to just buy a legal copy already.
It's obviously good that piracy is stopped, but flashcards still have uses that I'd be sad to see gone forever. For example, I couldn't have played Mother 3 in english if it wasn't for flashcards. Also, the fact that the 3DS is now region-locked will surely make me wish I had a way of playing non-US games.
pirated DS games can be played on the old DS anyways... Maybe Nintendo wants to sell older DS games on the E-Shop in the future ? Or is Nintendo already doing this ? I'm not up to date when it comes to Nintendo online services ^^

You'd think Nintendo could at least be honest about it. The actual description should be:
"This update won't improve your experience in any way whatsoever. This update is only to block unauthorized software".
And until Nintendo actually gives us an update that would "enhance the user's experience", like a better media player that actually can play video files, I'm keeping my cart.

I was always too afraid to put my R4 into my 3DS anyways. Just use it in the DS Light, which cannot, of course be updated.
I'm glad I only use my fat DS for flash card goodness, which has become my Mother 3 and NES machine now. I wouldn't bother investing in any sort of flash card for any system with regular firmware updates until it is near the end of its life cycle.

See this is the thing I love about Nintendo's attempt to stop pirating on their handheld.. they patch it quietly everyone's like, "Oh cool" it's broken in a couple of hours (8 by what I read there) and life goes on, Sony comes out with a silent patch that plops up security holes (aka zactly like Nintendo) and everyone's livid and filled with hate.. Vita still hasn't been fully cracked and I hope it doesn't until 6+ years from drop date...
Seriously how else are we getting more devs to work on portables when people hack things all the time.. progress in this case is just going backwards and stifling what these studios really need to focus on.
Old consoles, haveattem hackers, I'm fine with modding my psp with all old consoles but that's well after the life of said games/consoles.
