Lara Croft heading to Steam because of piracy photo

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is coming to Steam and Crystal Dynamics has assumed we're all going to be angry. After all, by using Steam, Lara Croft is using DRM, and that's evil. Of course, considering that most people actually like Steam, Crystal Dynamics is probably gearing up to apologize for something very few people will have a problem with.

"We've gone down the road of implementing Steam DRM where we've committed to the US being an exclusive and we're going to make a decision as to whether or not we'll use different distribution channels," says CD's Karl Stewart. "Tomb Raider's got a huge following, when you look at Tomb Raider games in the past and how many times they've been pirated. I go on some BitTorrent sites and within the first 48 hours there's like four hundred thousand downloads, it's crazy."

"The biggest fear we have is that people are going to be inquisitive and are going to download it."

While it's sad that Crystal Dynamics is worried about piracy far more than it's worried about making sure customers have the best service available, it's lucky that both concerns pretty much lead to Steam. So, a rather unnerving motivation, but an acceptable result. Unless you hate Steam of course, in which case you're f*cked.

Wait what? US only? Isn't she kind of big in the UK still? Or not? Steam kind of blows if you're outside of the US anyways though =/.

The irony is that Steam rips are actually easier to pirate and play in most cases.

Glad to hear they are using Steam. I've got absolutely no problem with it. Usually I don't care about DRM unless it's implemented so faulty, in my case Far Cry 2, that I can't even play the damn game with the original disc.

Studio puts their game on Steam. Studio fears DRM backlash.

I agree with Jim. How is this bad news? Steam's DRM is one of the most non-invasive schemes I've seen. Since DRM of some sort is here to stay, let it be Steam.

@ Milestailsprowe:

Public tracker fail?

BTW:

Steam versions are much more expensive then the retail ones. It keeps the prices way high for months. So the only positive things about it wich i can imagine are:

- comfortable way of getting a game (you don't need to go to the shop for purchase)
- Cloud (if it's supported by the game)
- Achievements (if there are), because we all like them
- Not unhackable, but good DRM

I'm very anti-DRM; I hate SecuROM, the Online Service Platform, etc. However, DRM-wise, my only problems with Steam are that it does require online activation for single-player games, and the client sometimes takes a while to launch. Overall, it's about a million times better than most DRM "solutions."

I'm not sure that not being able to buy and an isometric Laura Croft side-story platformer without steam on a PC counts as being f*cked. That's more of a mild annoyance that barely approaches "Oh no! They put onions in my burrito even though I asked them not to!"

@wardprod. Um, might want to blame the publisher and not Valve for that. Valve don't set the prices, the publisher does. Things do, and will, come down in price though.

Anyways, this doesn't bother me at all. I don't mind Steam, in face, I actually run a few games through it so I can talk to people.

its very sad that they are limiting their sales channels by using Steam, making the game exclusive to that platform, since other pc dd sites don't accept steam-connected titles.

Steam is the lesser of many evils.

Some aspects of it are not great. It's not a very well-designed software package, for example. The regional pricing was a dick move. But nevertheless, it's a great service, great community (mostly) great value, and it's great to be able to take your games wherever and make as many backups as you want.

I just hope that Gabe really does press the magical 'release all games' button if Valve ever does go under. We can only hope that he doesn't have to get out of his chair to do so.

I've never got the love for steam from pc gamers...can't they pretty much name any price they want and you have to pay it? as in, no competition whatsoever?

I've also heard, as someone else pointed out, that it's a total rip off in terms of pricing compared to the retail.

I don't get the mind that thinks these are good things?

I think people like Steam's DRM because it lets them download their thing wherever and whenever they want. You don't have to fuck around with activation codes or being connected to the internet 24/7. It's simple, easy and most importantly gamer friendly.

They also do crazy sales that you don't get at retail. You also have to realize it's the publishers that set the price of their games, not steam itself.

Steam games aren't really that much more expensive than retail options in America at least. Unless you're talking about a really old game that you can find in the bargain basement bin. But that's a different problem. As for competition, there are other alternatives like D2D or Impulse. But pricing wise, they already 'charge what they want' anyways. The price on Steam isn't correlated with the platform, it's just whatever the publisher decides the cost should be.

Steam games can actually cheaper then brick and mortars, because you don't have to pay sales tax on them, except in a few states.

The only game I know of that wasn't carried on other direct download sites was Modern Warfare 2. The reason for this was Steam Cloud support built into the game which required the use of the Steam client. Other digital download sites didn't want to carry a game that essentially installed a competing product.

Other than Modern Warfare 2 I don't think any other game has been 'dropped' by other digital distribution places due to the need for Steam Cloud support.

I wasn't looking forward to this at all but a US steam exclusive hmm well FUCK YOU Crystal Dynamics seriously fuck you. I really wish Valve would stop being such arseholes to the rest of the world sure it's the publishers decision but seriously you are unquestionably the best and biggest digital distributer you can quite easily say to them sell it in every region or don't sell it here.

People treat Valve like they can do no wrong and are quick to shift the blame off to th publishers but at the end of the day Valve are just as if not more guilty for the bullshit prices, region locks and poor support that we get outside the states. Not to mention breaking dozens of European consumer rights laws on a daily basis.

You can play steam offline by the way. If it doesn't find an internet connection it'll ask if you want to run steam in offline mode and play your games offline. I think it'll require you to connect to the internet though after a week or so.

But some of steam's best stuff like community, friends lists, chatting, the overlay with web browser, etc are only possible when online so there's no reason to run in offline mode unless your internet is out.

It's pretty much like xbox live except tailor made to work with PC's and PC gamers.

At least half of the people using Steam don't even realize that it has DRM. The rest I assume tend to find it completely unintrusive. Hell, I'm not a big fan of Valve's games and I hate Gabe Newell with a passion and even I love Steam!

Steam sucks, it takes a long time to switch accounts. So, you would link all your games to a single fragile account. Of course there's also the requirement of being online regularly (offline mode doesn't work well and is slow as hell).

Steam is a serious curb to piracy, despite the exceptions people are mentioning. It may not be perfect, but buying a game on steam really just takes one step, and is easy to repeat if you switch drives or machines. Legitimate disc-based games and pirated games take many more steps to install.

The community aspect helps, but Steam's real innovation is in making PC gaming almost as plug and play as console gaming is.

It's all about wearing people down... when Steam launched people were like "online activation? A constant client program needed to run the game? Down-time? FUCK YOU!"

Years later... "yay, Steam DRM! It's so friendly!"

I guess in 5 years people will say "yay, constant internet access needed, how friendly!" as long as they add messaging and some cheap weekend deals on their DRM infected games.

Wait... Who thinks Steam is too expensive? At worst you pay retail. More often than not, there are insane sales and pre-order deals. Remember last Christmas, when things were getting marked down 75%?

It is a contradiction, but I hate DRM and love Steam. No more searching for patches, downloading no-cd cracks, no more storing tons of DVDs and boxes in my cramped room- it's simply the future for PC gaming. Combined with synced saves, achievements, and community features, this truly is the best service out there.

Add to that the fact that it's the one true hope of finally bringing about cross-platform gaming. Valve is clearly doing good by doing well.

Exactly. Years ago, people pirated the bejesus out of Spore because of its DRM, and now we don't consider it to be that bad because of how Ubisoft has raised the bar.

@fart
