Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light officially announced photo

Crystal Dynamics has officially revealed its new Tomb Raider game today, except it's kind of not. The studio has eschewed the Tomb Raider name for this series reboot, instead calling it Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. Even more surprisingly, the game will not be a retail release, but a digital download.

Right now, there are no further details on the game, other than it will be "very different to what people might be expecting." The game will be shown off behind closed doors at GDC next week.

So, a new game, a new platform, and potentially a whole new direction. With Croft having sagged these past few years, this could be the shot in the arm she's looking for, especially with Square Enix breathing down Crystal Dynamics' neck. What do you reckon? Could Guardian of Light be a fresh start for the boob-flavored adventurer, or has Lara had her time in the sun?

Bleh, the Tomb Raider formula was never bad. The execution, however, had been poor over these past few years. But hey, I'm willing to see what they are gonna do with this new game. I'd be unsurprised if they took a fair amount of clues from Uncharted.

I just hope they don't stray too far from what I go to Tombraider for.
I just hope they focus on traversing the environment a lot more and combat a lot less than they did in Underworld and Legend.
Tomb Raider Anniversary got it pretty much perfect in my opinion.

I agree completely with RichieJT. I'm looking forward to a new release, but I hope they stick to environment/exploration. Concentrating on combat (as in Uncharted) would be a major mistake.

Exploration and puzzles should be the main focus imo. Combat should come second. We've enough shooters to last us a lifetime as it is.

You know what would be very different than what i was expecting? NOT rebooting bloody Tomb Raider again. Please, just give it a rest.

I like how Underworld, a great game if you ask me, sells a bit less than expected during a VERY busy season and the reaction is to completely overhaul the series.

Companies are way to reactionary sometimes, and then often not at all when they need to be (like calming down on Call of Duty).

It's a bottom-line driven industry to an absurdly illogical degree sometimes.

As for this, it sounds like it could be anything from a side scrolling puzzler to a episodic release of a more normal game. Who knows. As long as it comes to Steam, which I am sure it will, I will check it out.

Honestly, I don't know what you have against Tomb Raider. Every game that had Crystal Dynamics as a developer was great in my opinion. Especially Anniversary and Underworld. Legend was a little different but had many great moments.

Oh, Mr. Crystal Dynamics, remember that improving the franchise doesn't mean just increasing her breast size...

I wasn't sure if there was much steam left in this type of game till Uncharted came out and made me realize there isn't only plenty of steam left but hopefully its going to be coming back with a bang.

If they take enough cues from Uncharted 2 I think this could definitely be something special.

Is she a mercenary or a grave robber? Go back to actual tomb raiding, and stop committing genocide and killing endangered species. Actually killing giant T-Rexes are always a plus.

Not only has she has her time in the sun, but she has bad cougar tanlines.

Maybe she should be relegated to late-90s masturbatory aid and be done with it. So sad.

The title to me, has ushered in a sense of Shadow of the Colossus. Now *that* could be a very thrilling direction.

Right now, there are no further details on the game, other than it will be "very different to what people might be expecting."

What I'm expecting: Another third person realistic action puzzle platformer.

What I'm not expecting: A first person cartoon rhythm-based strategy racer.

Therefore: Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light will be a first person cartoon rhythm-based strategy racer.

Jim,

I just wanted to mention that I listened to a podtoid for the first time last night. A few things I'd like to point out:
- Y'all reccomend podtoid 94, but that particular podtoid is not available on Itunes..
-You're a Brit! That explains the shitty score you gave Heavy Rain. Just so you know, it makes you infinitely more likeable that you're Brittish.
-That Topher guy? He doesn't seem to actually play video games, why is he on the podcast?

My money is in random encounters and turn based battles. Except for that, the same old thing: tigers uses “Claws”, Lara uses “bewbs”.

I am sorry but Underworld was the best Tomb Raider game ever. Why change what they finally got right? I remember some statement from the publisher that the game underperformed at 1.5 million in sales...Are they crazy? With this "reboot", I hope they concentrate on the gunplay. What I fear is that the difficulty of puzzle solving will deminish and we'll be left with an Uncharted clone.

I enjoyed underworld, really liked that it ended with an environmental puzzle rattle than a battle.

If they can build a solid game then through in Lara, rather then build a descent Lara and try and build a game around here polygons they should do well.

Unfortunately decision makers (of milked ip's)are like children though, they usually do the exact opposite of what they should.

I'm a bit worried that it'll be different than the last 3 (which were excellent, ad several people said above), but I'm willing to wait and see what direction CD takes the series in.

I don't blame some of you for being burned out on the series, but you should just pretend like all the games after TR2 and before TR Legend, never existed. That's what I do.

Definitely thinking we might be seeing a move toward RPG-ish gameplay and an stronger emphasis on story, given that the title's name now places an even stronger emphasis on the identity of the main character.

If I see one, even one KH facet in it, the Lara Croft series needs to be put to rest before any more damage is done. With a title like that from a company like SQEX, I have fear.

Fuck being a digital download only. As both a Tomb Raider fan and a fan of survival horror games, I am really pumped for the reboot if the early rumours and such are to be believed. But I will never - never - buy a digital download only game. If it doesn't have a physical release, I'm not buying it. Can't afford it, I gotta be able to trade in.

It'll have to be better than the last one, which had its moments but overall wasn't that hot. They should definitely put more focus on the boobs and less focus on the crummy driving sequences and retarded flying people.

my thoughts exactly.

It'll be interesting to see where they take this. Hopefully a more agile easily maneuverable platforming system will be implemented, because I've always liked the overall idea of the series, but could never really get myself into enjoying the gameplay.
Hell, if it IS a 2D downloadable title, I kind of hope it's like a robust version of the 2D flash Mirror's Edge.
