Landon Donovan, Carlos Vela on North American FIFA 11 box photo

Last week, EA Sports announced Brazilian footballer Kaká as the global cover athlete for FIFA 11, and noted that 17 other soccer stars would join him in specific regions. Today, EA has revealed the North American cover athletes for the game: Carlos Vela (of Arsenal F.C. and the Mexico national football team), and Landon Donovan (of Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy and the US Men's National Team). You can check out the full PS3 box art in the gallery below.

Donovan single-handedly awakened American interest in soccer with his stellar performance in this summer's World Cup, including a thrilling, stoppage-time, Group-C-winning goal against Algeria that has gone down as the best moment in US men's international soccer thus far. (Aside: Watch this video of the world's reaction to Donovan's goal. I dare you not to get chills or have tears well up in your eyes. It's beautiful.) This marks Donovan's third appearance on the cover of a FIFA Soccer game; he was also on the North American boxes of FIFA Soccer 2003 and FIFA Soccer 07.

Putting Donovan on the box is a smart move by EA -- Americans have already stopped caring about soccer, but those who watched the World Cup won't soon forget Donovan's heroics, and they'll hopefully be reminded of his goals when they see him on the box for FIFA 11 when it launches on September 28th in North America for PS3, 360, Wii, PC, PSP, PS2, DS, and mobile platforms. (The game will launch on October 1st in Europe and Asia.)

I watched the video, teared up a bit. What are these things falling out of my eyes? I think I'm allergic.

Wow Samit, for an American you certainly used the word football a lot, congrats.

Actually (correct me if I'm mistaken) but in Mexico, Soccer is Futbol (or Football, whatever.) So it would be called the Mexico National Football Team. Looks like he's done his research 8-)

Yep, called Fútbol here hehehe.....surprised they went with Vela for the cover instead of Mexico's darling "Chicharito"

Don't want to be a pedantic dick but in football what you have referred to as extra time would typically be called injury time, added time or stoppage time. Extra time specifically refers to an additional period of thirty minutes played when a game ends in draw in a knockout format.

Personally I would say this is your greatest moment:

But I'm a Scottish.

I would also have put Brad Friedel on the box, fucking legend.

I definitely shed a tear...when Netherlands lost the final. I'm still pretty bitter about it. That was probably their best chance in a long time

Terrible cover choices. Just put Fabregas on the cover already.

@Mockingbird -- who else could they have picked? We're talking North American box art, and the market is probably dominated by Mexican and American buyers who want to see their own players.

Say what you want about Donovan (and there's plenty to say), but he's the most recognizable US player in terms of the mass market.

Fabregas? Are you an Arsenal fan? He is a good player, but you have to understand, they are selling the game to an American audience. A large portion of America would have no idea who Fabregas is. While this cover is "meh," it really doesn't matter who is on the cover. All that matters is what is on the disc inside the cover. I wanna see some gameplay already! Gamescom is where it will be at.

Can we just get Tony the Tiger on there so most Americans will know the cover athlete is? When I say "most Americans", I meant REAL AMERICANS. JK. LOLRACISM. Nah, Soccer's okay.

I'm not fan of Soccer, neither the FIFA series... But surprises me that Javier Hernandez "Chicharito" is not there, the guy has been sounding a lot in lately here in Mexico and the UK as long I know

I hope they get over this regional cover crap soon. Kaka, terrible choice as he may be, is still recognizable to virtually everyone who's going to buy this game. The cover would even look better with just one person on it. There's no point in putting two mediocre (yes, mediocre) players on the cover just to make North Americans feel included. At least other regions have their own high calibre players to offer I guess.

Villa loves them Prada handbags. I agree Hernandez would have been better, but I don't think he would want to jinx his first Man U. season.

Needs more Drogba. And less Donovan.

Still gonna get this, really don't care about the cover. I'm gonna destroy kids online.

These players are connected to the Americas, so no Drogba or Villa or any other player not from the AMERICAS.

As a Gooner, I can confirm that I am pleased that my man Vela is on the front. Kaka looks too skinny.

WHY NO MENTION OF KAKA?
