La Mulana devs talk difficulty and 'the key to fun' photo

La-Mulana is known for terminating folks. The game is a lot of fun, but it's so daunting at times that some fans are afraid to play the game through a second time. The team at Nigoro (La-Mulana's developers) seem aware of this. They're working to make the WiiWare build of the game less punishing, while making the game more believable and detailed in the process.

For instance, in the PC build of the games, spikes will damage you no matter where you hit them. That's great for making a game hard, but it also works to make things feel artificial. In the WiiWare port, spikes will only do damage if you hit the spiky tops. You just walk through them from the sides. Little details like that make the game's pixel-based world feel much more real. These kinds of touches make Castlevania Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night such special experiences, and La-Mulana feels the same way.

Don't worry retro-fans, the game will still be plenty tough. When asked why they make their games so hard, the guys at Nigoro say that "Difficulty is the key to fun" and that games should "taunt in a way that excites and encourages the player."

So that's why my friends keep calling me a derp-derp. They're trying to get me excited!

Having the first comment 22 hours after the original post is strange.

I think it looks neat. First I've heard of it though, I think.
But I'm pretty much always up for a 'new' retro platformer.

Screenshot looks like it's Indiana Jones/original Prince of Persia style.

Oh well, La Mulana looks excellent. I really enjoy the castlevania style weapons and items system. Will it be a metroidvania as well, or will it be level based?

I wonder how Hell Temple will feel a second time. Will that be easier, too, or will Nigoro pull out all the stops? Then again, half the challenge was those darn wall-jump controls.

La-Mulana uses a Metroid-style world map. All of the levels are connected to a hub world, and some of the environments connect to each other.

I wonder how hard the game really is, I'd hate to compare it to Cave Story but how hard is it compared to.....SUPER METROID!? I can't think of anything good, haven't played any Castlevania games despite the fact that I find Metroid platformers fun and Cave Story was like my favorite Wii game this year.

Combat in the game is tough, but the main source of difficulty was the puzzles, many of which require a level of abstract thinking that borders on full-blow schizophrenia. And then there are the puzzles that don't reset when you screw them up...

Anyway, if anyone's curious, you can always download the original game and an easy-to-apply translation patch for free.
