[Thanks, Nick]

TOKYO, JAPAN, April 26, 2007 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) and Sony Corporation (Sony) have jointly announced today that Ken Kutaragi, Representative Director, Chairman and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., will retire from his executive position at SCEI effective June 19, 2007, when SCEI’s annual shareholders’ meeting will take place. Mr. Kutaragi will pass on the torch to the next generation, stepping back from his executive management responsibility of the company to serve as Honorary Chairman of SCEI. With his deep and instinctive insight into future technology, Mr. Kutaragi will also continue to support Sir Howard Stringer, Chairman and CEO, Sony Corporation, as senior technology advisor.

Concurrently, Kazuo Hirai, currently President and Group COO, SCEI, will be promoted to President and Group CEO, continuing his responsibility as the leader of the PlayStation® business worldwide.

Mr. Kutaragi, well known as the “Father of PlayStation”, invented and launched the original PlayStation in 1994 and its successor, PlayStation 2, in 2000. Since the introduction of PlayStation and subsequently PlayStation 2, these platforms opened up a vast market of computer entertainment. The two platforms combined now have an installed base of more than 200 million units in homes around the world, with more than 2 billion units of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software titles shipped worldwide. The third generation of the company’s home computer entertainment system, PLAYSTATION®3, launched in November 2006 in Japan and North America and in March 2007 in Europe, will continue to revolutionize the computer entertainment experience with its immense computational power connected to the network.

After completing the launch of PLAYSTATION 3 worldwide, Mr. Kutaragi has decided to pursue his dreams beyond PlayStation and to accelerate his network vision. “I am happy to graduate from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. after introducing four platforms to the PlayStation family,” said Ken Kutaragi, Chairman and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. “It has been an exciting experience to change the world of computer entertainment by marrying cutting edge technologies with creative minds from all over the world. I’m looking forward to building on this vision in my next endeavors.” “Ken Kutaragi is a rare combination of a powerful visionary and entrepreneur in one figure,” said Howard Stringer, Chairman and CEO, Sony Corporation. “Not only has he created a multi-billion dollar business for the Sony Group, he has brought the industry into a new dimension. Sony has benefited tremendously from his vision, his creative genius, and from the very strong team he assembled and nurtured. As Ken moves forward to pursue new opportunities, we will encourage and support him. My support also goes to Kazuo Hirai, who is a terrific executive with a proven track record with PlayStation business in the US. I am confident that he will inspire and lead SCEI to new heights.”

Makes me do a happy dance. He may be the father of the PlayStation brand, but he's also a big reason so many people despise Sony right now.

Now maybe they can get back on track....

i thought the captain was supposed to go down with his ship :)

he did huge things for sony and gaming, its a shame that his over ambitious additude toward the ps3 will kinda leave a sour taste in all our mouths.

this is like when Zidane retired.

An excellent career ruined (or imortalised) by the end.

He lost all his credibility when he insisted on using that ugly Spiderman typeface. I kinda gonna miss him, Ken and Kaz where a great comic duo. I don't think Kaz and Phil will be that funny.

It is, indeed, true that Ken did a lot for gaming. Ever since E3 last year, Sony have become riders on the storm... a storm of bad PR without release.

I can't remember the last time I heard any good news about the PS3... and that is a shame. I recall BEFORE last year's E3 that I was completely stoked for the PS3, and I believed it would do this gen what the PS2 did for last-gen. Seems we were all wrong.

Best wishes to Mr. Kutaragi in his future endeavors.

I though women and children were the first off when the boat is going down. I guess it goes by wealth, now. Good job getting out before the seas take the whole company.

Back on track? With Kaz at the wheel?

"It's retirement! RREEeeEETIREMENT!"

Hmm. Maybe there's hope in Phil Harrison?

"Seriously, guys, you're going to love this. We're making Ikea's entire catalogue available to you through micro-transactions. It's brilliant! Who wants to play video games when you've got a house to decorate and a wardrobe to accessorize?"

Uhh... Jack Tretton?

"Dammit, we're so awesome that you can't even buy our shit in a store! BWAHAHAAA!"

Listen, I kind of LIKE the PS3. But sometimes I wish that Sony's upper echelon would just clam up for a few months and let Ratchet & Clank do the talking.

He got Gunpeied. What does an honorary chairman do all day? Sits in the corner and thinks about what he did?

Too bad, he did a lot of great things for the industry. Unfortunately Japanese businesses don't forgive very easily when you blow it.

I don't blame Ken for Sony's problems. I blame Sony for Sony's problems. Sony just likes blaming Ken.

Sony is a lawyership with the worst PR dept in the world. They act like greedy lawyers and record company execs(as they compose 99% of the Sony family), but leave idiots like Phil Harrison to try to make it look good.

Their greedy, awful, unethical, cocky attitudes as a company is brining them down. Ken just made the hardware on one division of the company.

What the hell is so bad about the playstation3?

really, if you own one, then you should be asking the same question. I love how people call the playstation 3 a total disaster when its sold more units in the same timeframe as the ps2 launch. I love it, I cant wait until this christmas when the ps3 is blowing people's heads off. Literally, it'll be blowing up people's heads when they open the box!

Well, he certainly left Kaz holding the bag. I wonder if he instructed Hirai in the ways of outrageous press statements before his exit?

(btw, I have a PS3, and I’m a Sony supporter)

Okay, I’m a video store owner and I have to say this….Blue-ray is doomed.
Why? Because only 1out of every 10 HD porn movies is in blue-ray. I know this because I sell them. Back in the early 80’s when I opened my first video store we had VHS and Beta. Most porn was released on VHS so Beta (which was better) was doomed. We rented and sold more porn then regular movies back then and nothing has changed.
The porn industry is a 57 Billion dollar a year industry. And they have decided that HD-DVD is the way to go. Just like in the 80’s porn is going to push the format to victory. Ken Kutaragi may have retired but he’s still going to get blamed for this. All Sony had to do was make a great GAME system. Not try to push an expensive unproven format on us. DVD’s came out 3 years before the PS2 and it had no competition so it was cheap. Damn Ken, what where you thinking?
