All Final Fantasy titles have a touch of quirk and whimsy in them (seriously, someone was drunk when Quina was designed), but they are, by and large, somber and melodramatic affairs. Announced last week, the most recent addition to Final Fantasy's ever-swelling ranks, however, seems to be a little on the lighter side: A Moogle Kupo d'Etat, the latest expansion for Final Fantasy XI.
While I'm no fan of Final Fantasy XI, the concept of it fascinates me. Its depth and scope are really intimidating, and that may be why I can't really ease into the experience -- we're talking about a game with 18-hour boss fights, here. Everything about it would suggest some sort of cosmic, divine emergence. Just look at the titles of the expansions: Rise of the Zilart, Wings of the Goddess, The Chains of Promathia. My brain is swelling with all the hyperbole.
And yet, the title of the latest expansion chapter is a pun. And it's about a Moogle conspiracy.
The new trailer (after the break) promises "a madcap misadventure." Not only is a Moogle misadventure kind of a weird premise in general, it's especially out of character for Final Fantasy XI. There is nothing madcap about fighting a boss until you vomit.
In any case, if you're interested in playing A Moogle Kupo d'Etat, you'll need to have downloaded the Rise of the Zilart expansion and be at least level 10. It's the second of threee "expansion chapters," which were designed to expand on the storyline of existing locations in Vana'diel instead of adding new ones. A follow-up to A Crystalline Prophecy, the expansion is now available for pre-sale at PlayOnline.com. A Moogle Kupo d'Etat will be playable on July 20th.

The only reason that fight lasted 18 hours was because they didn't know how to properly defeat it. Square Enix put a time limit on bosses so they will despawn if you don't figure out how to defeat them.
I don't even play FFXI, but I'm already fucking sick of people bringing up that one boss as a negative point against the game. IT WAS ONE FUCKING BOSS AND CLEARLY HE WAS EITHER MEANT TO A) NOT BE KILLED, BUT NOT BE THE MOST ASS RAPINGEST POWER IN THE UNIVERSE (a la Kerafym), B) WAS NOT BEING KILLED RIGHT OR C) WAS INTENTIONALLY MEANT TO BE ONE OF THOSE "WTF?!" BOSS FIGHTS THAT HAS NEVER BEEN EXPERIENCED IN ANY MMO BEFORE.
Besides, who gives a fuck? I mean really? If there is a mob that takes an entire day to fight, and you didn't want to spend an entire day fighting it, why fight it? Or even not fight it but still bitch about it?
Sorry, little pent up rage there. I've just been finding more and more that gamers want to whine and cry like bitches, and while some of it is warranted, the vast majority of it isn't.
Dude, Vanilla, chill out man. Most people don't care one way or the other, it's just not everyday that you get boss fights as epic as the ones in Final Fantasy XI. It's an interesting story, not a negative against the game.
I've never been able to get into FF XI either. I've always gotten REALLY bored when trying to start playing it, and never gotten much high than level 15-20.
I apologize if you think I was raging on you, not the case, just frustrated with the topic of that boss fight in general is all! =D
I've been more of an active student of game design in the past year and I've noticed many trends that really just bug me. The 18 hour boss fight was just blown waaaaay the fuck out of proportion. And I don't really get why gamers went from this happy little cult completely content on munching down the latest and best games and sharing with one another about experiences to have this now amplified desire to bitch, whine, moan and complain about anything and everything they don't like, regardless if they're involved or even touched on in any way, shape or form.
Some things... Yeah, I agree. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and often those opinions conflict, it's okay to complain. But the sheer amount of bitching about that 1 boss that 1 guild decided to fight that 1 time caused online publications and communities to go apeshit about how stupid and insane it is and how Square must be out of their fucking minds and holy fuck FFXI is confirmed as a piece of garbage because of it.
I just hadn't spoken my mind on the boss issue is all, so I had some anti-RAGE RAGE bottled up. I'm sorry, hope you can forgive me. <3
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Mhhh.... :'3
