KOTOR MMO has 'potential' to fleece you of all your cash photo

With news of a Knights of the Old Republic MMO out in the open, Star Wars fans must surely already be bomb-proofing their wallets for the inevitable cash drain that lurks on the horizon. Naturally, LucasArts is doing nothing to help, already talking about the merchandise opportunities that present themselves.

"We are looking forward to working with our partners in LucasFilm, that have worked with us previously on KOTOR in bringing the comic books to life, and action figures, and all kinds of things," beams LucasArts' Tom Nichols. "I think the potential is there for us to have similar types of products and extensions from our licensing partners as well."

Rough translation: Your bank account is going to get f*cking raped.

My bank account is safe, as I am not the kind of idiot that goes out and buys every piece of licensed merchandise.

Becoming a major star wars fan was one of the worst financial decisions I have ever made in my life.

Many have speculated on what game will be the WoW killer. Well, this is game, I believe, will not only be the WoW killer (which, by that point, WoW may already be irrelevant), but it will also strike serious fear into Blizzard and their next MMO.

Bioware is one of the few companies on Blizzard's level...and they have the Star Wars license, which sells itself. Blizzard is the master, and I'm sure they'll have tricks up their sleave for the next MMO. But you know they are (finally) in for a brutal fight.

I guess I'm safe. I had no plans on buying this game anyway. I hardly have time to play some levels on Ratchet and Clank, let along get involved in an MMO.

Eh ... what?

Lets not get ahead of ourselves daddy. We havn't seen a shred of gameplay yet. As much as I love Bioware and agree with you on their level of skill, they are up until this point single player developers. Lets hold off using "WoW killer" until we can see if they can pull off the same experience in an MMO as they can in single player.

Has anyone found out about the monthly cost? hearing different things about how it's possible to be a single player game with hubs wher eyou can grab people, but nothing that i've heard has confirmed anything about monthly payments. I love star wars, but paying monthly for a game that has been said able to play solo? that's a bit much

No game will ever kill World of Warcraft. Ever.

I'd still like to see some proof that this isn't going to be yet another lowest common denominator WoW clone.

@Aertyr

Up until WoW, Blizzard just made RTS' and dungeon crawlers. They had no real experience in MMOs either.

Could Bioware fail at delivery a quality Star Wars MMO? Sure, they could. But my bets are that Bioware delivers.

I'm a huge Blizzard and WoW fan. But if someone gives me a great Star Wars MMO, Blizzard and anyone else is going to have a hard time convincing me to try out any other MMO.

...yeah, I'll try it. It's not the KotOR 3 I wanted, but I'll try it.

But I'm still more psyched for Star Trek Online.

I believe the idea is you will be able to order an action figure or model figure of your in-game character

The WoW killer? Why, it will be Blizzard's next MMO.

Looking forward to Star Wars though, definitely on my list of MMOs to play. :)

Yea, my wallet's already beginning to form wings so it can fly off to EA/Lucasarts/Bioware.

The only game that can kill WoW is another MMO made by Blizzard.

But i will try this one. ^^

Yeah, because we all know that there's a Sith Lord standing next to the Star Wars merchandise using the mind trick to force you to buy it. I'll pre-order SW:TOR, and probably play it for the life of the game. But I'm not going to waste my hard earned money on pointless Star Wars crap just because it exists.
