Kotick: Call of Duty 'greatest entertainment franchises of all time' photo

Today, Activision Blizzard announced that its Call of Duty franchise has surpased $3 billion in retail sales, taking into account internal numbers, as well as independent tracking sources.

Keeping this number in mind, and the fact that the games in the franchise have sold more than 55 million units worldwide, expect one or more Call of Duty games a year until the end of time. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick is pleased.

"Call of Duty has become one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time," he's quoted as saying in a press release. "If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing Call of Duty, it is likely to be one of the most viewed entertainment experiences in modern history."

The games are good, and apparently people like them. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launched earlier this month, setting records with its five-day sales hitting approximately $550 million.

It's impossible to find a better picture to go with that headline.

Don't compare games to movies in sales or hours viewed. I spent more time playing Batman: Arkham Asylum than watching The Dark Knight, but that doesn't necessarily make it better.

The pop-culture references cometh...

I'm not the biggest fan of Call of Duty, I find them to be fun, but I'm more of a Half-Life guy, so maybe I'm the wrong person to be talking to about this, but I just can't see CoD being as memorable as other franchises, at least not yet. 20 years from now, if Infinity Ward leaves the franchise, will it still be relevant? Or even good for that matter? Bobby, we'll talk then.

Yes because it's not popular because it's fun but because everyone else is an idiot. I don't even like Call of Duty but your sheeple argument was ridiculous when actual smart people were doing it.

I think he got entertainment and videogames mixed up.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it safe to say only the last 2 Modern Warfare games are what made the entire franchise as relevant as ever, and not the entire catalog? I never heard "ZOMG CoD2" and many said CoD3 was arguably the worst.

It seems mainstream games are going the way of music, television, and movies.

Oh well. Hopefully some of the niche devs will find a home somewhere.

I still don't see Video Games as the same kind of entertainment as Movies or Television. For video games to pass as entertaining, some kind of challenge should be involved, not just banking on multiplayer.

Oh, my dear Taylor Swift...

Sorry, I'm commenting on the article now. I honestly, honestly don't think that the franchise will be memorable come a few years from now. I'm one of those guys who never jumped on the COD bandwagon- don't get me wrong, I've tried the games and they're definitely solid, well made shooters, but I can never get into them.
Point is, only Modern Warfare will be considered one of the greatest games of all time. No one says "Man, Call of Duty 3 is the SHIT!" or anything like that. The name Call of Duty will mean realistic war shooter, but only Modern Warfare will have any weight to it in the future.

CoD: MW2 is kind of like summer blockbusters. They sell huge amounts of tickets every year, but a lot of times they are crap that everyone completely forgets about.

Can't wait for the 3 hour CoD:MW3 campaign! Maybe next year PC users will get custom content like "it works, kind of".

According to Wikipedia, Mario is still THE best selling franchise with CoD coming in at 18th place. Talking about sold copies, not revenue.

Basically what happened was I clicked over from another window and just happened to land on the Add Comment button, and posted a blank message.

anyway yeah, the guy runs a company and he's happy right now because he has found a way to convert money to happiness I guess but he's obviously not thinking clearly. There's nothing especially memorable about CoD as far as I'm concerned, it's like harry potter or twilight. not special, just lucky. The people enjoying these media care more about having something in common with their friends, naturally, than the product they're trying to enjoy, and as long as it's not a complete pile of garbage most people will be happy to partake.

Number 18, eh? Sounds about right. It'll be remembered that way.

@the silent protagonist, what I just said might be a relevant resource to anyone who needs a rebuttal to your post. The challenge IS the multiplayer.

I agree, he's making such a big deal about 55 million copies, but the Gran Turismo franchise has sold 52+ million, & that's not even multiplatform.

I'm not saying COD is doing bad (that'd be idiotic), but he should get some perspective.

Oh, & he's Bobby Kotick, which makes him a twat anyway!
