Konami taking prenatal vitamins, prepares for Contra Rebirth photo

Konami Japan has announced Contra Rebirth is coming to the Wii via WiiWare in Japan this summer.

Not much is known about the game other than the fact that it's supposedly an all-new Contra adventure, borrowing liberally from previous titles in the series, similar to Gradius Rebirth. By looking at the screenshots, the game has a distinct Contra III: Alien Wars feel, which is a good thing... because that game freakin' ruled. Contra Rebirth will feature cooperative support, likely offline only.

The title will be available on in Japan on May 11 for 1,000 Wii Points. There are no details on a North American release at this time.

[Thanks, darkair!]

If this isn't ported to the 360, in the words of Frank Reynolds, "somebody's gotta get stabbed."

Contra 3 (or Super Probotector: Alien Rebels as we call it over here) is my favorite game ever. I want that game on XBLA/PSN, though Contra Rebirth should be better than nothing (at least better than the Contra XBLA port ).

Nice Konami, but once again, you are showing you have few ideas, even for Wii Ware, which kind of defeats the object of it.

Contra is great, but why not try something new, Konami? Are you so trapped in a 2D means of design that you can't try anything new at all on Wii Ware?

I really don't understand you lot. Snatcher/Policenauts is crying out for some DS/PSP love and you give us this.

A real head scratcher.

That needs to be on a system worth owning.

awesome! I will have to wait for reviews, however. Konami's made some really terrible Contra games throughout the years (although Contra 4 is amazing even though it hasn't been released here in Yurop) and I don't wanna just throw my money at anything that comes my way from a franchise that I love. (see: Sonic games. not the best example, but hey.)

they should release Contra 4 in PAL territories so that I can play with someone, though. I know few people that own a DS and even fewer that are willing to import games...

Fuck Yeah! WiiWare! All I need now is a PAL release.

I'm half excited. The other half would be completed when the game gets a release date for America.

@eskimo bob

The only terrible Contra games I can think of are the two PSX titles which were farmed out to Appaloosa Interactive and Contra Force on the NES, but that doesn't count because it wasn't a Contra game at all.

@MegaStryke: see, the thing is that there aren't very many Contra games, and around half of them are terrible. the first three Contra games - Contra/Gryzor/Probotector, Super C and Contra 3 - were all bloody excellent titles, but since then Konami hasn't released a good Contra game in PAL territories in a little over 10 years. they've steadily gone downhill, but with the release of Contra 4 that might have changed.
