Konami puts the MGS4/Xbox 360 rumors to bed ... until the next time they crop up

Konami puts the MGS4/Xbox 360 rumors to bed ... until the next time they crop up photo
     PS3

A rumor recently appeared on a Web site that was not us (for a change) concerning the appearance of Metal Gear Solid 4 on the Xbox 360. The Internet was on it like maggots on a rabbit corpse, but Konami has now cruelly swiped away the hopes and dreams of 360 owners ... for the moment, at least.

Responding to Kotaku, Konami's Michael Shelling has emphatically stamped out the latest gossip fire with the following statement:

For the record, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a PlayStation 3 exclusive and there are no plans to develop an Xbox 360 version of the game.

Ouch, Konami's PR department is pulling no punches this time. What happened to teasing us with coy phrases that inject some sense of false hope? While Konami could have milked fanboy dreams forever, it seems they're getting pretty sick of answering questions on the whole thing and have essentially much just said it isn't happening ... right now.

But then, do we believe PR people? Personally, I don't know what to think anymore, except it might be time for MGS fans without a PS3 to punch their grandmothers in the face for their gold teeth, just in case they need to buy a box of Blu-rays in the near future.

[Thanks, Hatchetforce]

As I've said before Guns of the Patriots is a PS3 exclusive. That's not to say that they can't just, say, change the subname of the game and rerelease it with bonus features such as Snake Tails!

I reckon that Konami ring up Sony on a daily basis and go "Yo Sony, like we were thinking of putting this on the 360 too, but man I could sure go a boat". Konami gets a boat. Next day: "Yo sony, like we were thinking of putting this on the 360 again, but man I could sure go a million dollars". Konami get a million dollars. Next day: etc.

/agree with Bronx, I believe in Ron... cause look, I drink too.

Also, there is NO WAY Konami will not be cashing in on this game by releasing it on the 360 (I expect a PC port too the way things are now).

Did everyone forget about the million copies that need to sell on day one? Somehow I seriously doubt Konami really wants to lose money on MSG4...

Also, you PS3 fanboys bitching about the possibility of a 360 port, consider you may never have another MGS if this game doesn't get ported and make money!

Come on, can we please spin this? Let me try:

Shelling says that METAL GEAR SOLID 4: GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS is a PS3 exclusive. He doesn't mention METAL GEAR SOLID 4: GUNS OF THE PATRIOTSISTANCE, which will be the Xbox 360 version that is release on two discs, with additional content in 2009.

@Nick: Probably three discs, considering the extra content that’ll be included in that version, and the size limitations of dual-layer DVD-ROMs. OH SNAP!!!

Ok, at this point both Kojima Productions and Konami have said PS3:YES, 360:NO. I just want this rumor gone until they say something different. Weren't the denials of Bioshock on PS3 equally succinct? Really, I don't care if it becomes multi-platform in some incarnation at some future time, but right now, here, for reals, everyone that has any sort say in it has said PS3 only. If it changes then it will have changed, but presently folks should chill and live with the 360's non-mgs4-having-ness. Is it so much to ask?

I'm still going to side with the rumor. Between Ron's word and the reaction to it, as well as the recent comments from Konami, not to mention good ol' common sense, it's just too likely to happen.

Is this still an issue? The port is inevitable as far as I see. That still doesn't change the fact I'll buy a PS3 when it comes down to a comfortable price. My gaming PC will suit me fine until then.

It WILL happen and you're a dumb fuck if you believe otherwise. But then again, you're right. It would be as believable as seeing Metal Gear Solid on the GameCube or Resident Evil 4 on the Playstation 2..... Oh wait. ;P

Like I said before denial means next to nothing even coming from the publishers/developers nowadays.

Resident Evil 4 was supposed to be exclusive to the GameCube, and when asked about it Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami said he would "cut off his own head" if Resident Evil 4 came to the Playstation 2.

We all know how that turned out. Even the creator of the series saying he would practically kill himself if it happened wasn't enough to keep if from happening.

Hell, were you not paying attention to the Metal Gear series at all lately? Metal Gear was supposed to be a Sony/Playstation exclusive or at least many people felt that way and people thought hell would freeze over before that changed. Well, GameCube got it's own remake of Metal Gear Solid and XBox got Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. If it weren't so close to the XBox's death I have very little doubts about seeing Metal Gear Solid 3 ported over on it.

Yeah, yeah Konami. You keep telling yourself that. Later we'll get it on Wonderswan, DS and the Master System...

tazarthayoot has the right idea, they've done it before with Sons of Liberty and Twin Snakes and both of those were released on less then successful platforms. It would make no sense whatsoever to skip the 360, especially when it has the larger userbase and evidently fans are rabidly anticipating MGS on their console despite all these Konami rumour smashes.

Stranger things have happened and imho I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

Even if the game was ported to the 360, it wouldn't be done until mid to late 2009 and would be 'old news' by then.

All you people clamoring about it selling better on the 360 are missing the whole point of providing exclusive brands that will force people to buy PS3s... if Sony didn't have this, they'd be dead in the water in 2008. Of course they're throwing money at Konami like crazy, but why wouldn't they since they need titles like this to catch up to the 360 console sales? And, with this following off the DMC4 packaged PS3 boxes, there is the possibilty of a good year for getting more PS3s in people's homes.

Perhaps you don't give a shit and you just don't want to have to get a PS3 or you sleep with your 360 tucked in your arms, but I'd rather there be some good ole competition between the two consoles rather than just one leading console and another that sometimes gets ports made for it.

This needs to stop. For some reson you Xbots won't take Konami's word that it's not coming to 360. Should everyone then not tkae 2K Boston's word that Bioshock isn't coming to PS3? No means NO. If no meant yes, which to you guys, it seems that way, you'd all be in jail for rape.

Secondly, why keep saying "Sony is paying fat checks to keep them quiet"? If Sony was paying Konami, then it would DEFINATELY BE PS3 EXCLUSIVE!!!! Unless of course all the 3rd party exclusives that M$ paid for are coming to the PS3, since you guys think paying will not guarantee exclusivity.

Lastly, don't trash the game because it's not coming to 360. "This game is crap because it's not on my system of choice" is just an ignorant statement.

Dual Layer Blu-Ray is 50GB. Kojima has already said it's most likely going to be a dual layer Blu-Ray disc so do the math. How many DVD's does it take to equal 50GB? I have no doubt that Konami would like to use the expensively created MGS4 content on the 360 but they are either going to have to cut it up severely or go another direction completely to get it on the 360.

@KingMe

Just to clear up your Bioshock refernce = shit because a) it made money and b)the 360 owns the 'current gen' market so it doesnt NEED to be ported to break even.

This is not true for Meal Gear, this is why the rumours wont go away its just common business sense.

Why all the rapist jibes towards the commenters too, have you got something to confess?

I hope MGS is a PS3 exclusive it needs it, however i get the feeling that it will come out sooner or later...like i said it make business sense....

I agree with the it will come out in 2009 with a different subtitle crowd. I wouldn't be shocked if it was the first hd-dvd only game for the 360 ultimate.

It'll still sell alot of ps3's to people on the fence, the hardcore 360 fans will get to play it eventually, and konami makes a litte more money. Everyone wins, and if I recall correctly Ron said it would be out on the 360 eventually, not anytime near the ps3's date.

@ Torpedo Ted

May I ask, what was the install base of the 360 when Bioshock came out? About the same as the PS3 should be, should sales continue, when MGS4 comes out? That being the case, why wouldn't it be able to break even without being ported?

Do you still believe the PS3 isn't selling? Would you like to know that since the price cut, PS3 has outsold the 360? (It's January, so don't say it's just a quick surge) Do you still believe the PS3 has no games? Heavenly Sword, Ratchet, Uncharted, UT3, Warhawk, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, etc all say differently. Not to mention AC and COD4.

And I only made the rapist comment because you think no means yes, this is what you believe, not myself

@ loki_d20

Once again, you are correct
TorpedoTed's Avatar

@ loki and king me

MGS4 is a massive budget game, it blows Bioshock out of the water with the amount its cost, thats why, regardless of the install base. If the game has cost 4 times more to develop hen you need 4 times more users to buy it....see?

Also Sony isnt exactly flush(business sense comment) they cant just hand companies 50 Million like MS dif for GTA4 download stuff.

No wonder you guys cant understand simple business and sales numbers if you think people who say this game will come out on xbox are rapists. Amazing sense guys way to go ;¬)

Action Bastard: Yeah, denying a large amount of people the chance to play a game and cutting a title's audience in half is something to celebrate.

More audience = good. Less audience = bad.

People who feel good when a game loses potential customers don't really respect the game industry at all.

To point again what everyone knows:
Metal Gear Solid was a PS1 exclusive.
Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes was ported to the Game cube.
Metal Gear 2: i don´t know what´s the complete name was a PS2 exlusive.
Metal Gear 2: Subsistance was ported later to the XBOX.
Metal Gear Solid 3: We are playing with the father was a PS2 exlcusive, and stayed like it until now.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of old men is gonna be a PS3 exlusive.
We don´t know if there is gonna be Metal Gear 4: Wheelchairs with guns for the 360, but who cares? When it comes out, the PS3 is gonna be cheap and you will be abple to find a used Mteal Gear 4 everywhere.

What I find absolutely hilarious is that some select people are bashing the hell out of PS3 owners labelling them as "Stupid sony fanboys who only want to keep MGS4 on their system"... Yet later in that same message they will also mention about wanting MGS4... Complain about it because it's on another console because you want it on yours... And then you call someone a fanboy for owning the console it's being released on?... The amount of ignorance in people as such is extremely high. It's one thing to say that and not care about the game.. It's another to want the game then call people fanboys because they own the console its releasing on.

As far as my own feeling on all of this, I do feel it will eventually be ported over. I personally don't understand the "needs to sell 1 million on the first day" thing... Why must it be on the first day? That's what I don't understand. I read the article and it just doesn't say..

@ torpedoted, If you think Sony can't throw money out like MS you are mistaken. Keep in mind they are the largest Electronic manufacturer in the world sir. MGS 4 was built for the ps3 on the ps3 architecture, for quite some time now. MS asked for this themselves, they didnt include a HDD with every system, they didnt incorporate a proprietary disc that held more memory, the processing power on the 360 is inferior to the ps3. You think konami doesnt know they could lose money by not putting it on the 360? Hell, they lose money not putting it on the wii. You think Square enix doesnt know that? You think any company that makes ps3 exclusive games doesnt know that they could potentially lose money not putting it on a competing console? Maybe sir they just prefer what the ps3 has to offer their work, did you ever think of that?
