Konami officially tells us about Wii exclusive Castlevania Judgment photo

The fact that it's coming isn't news -- Nintendo Power has the exclusive first look at the Wii exclusive Castlevania Judgement in its latest issue. But we just got the press release and its been confirmed that this isn't a fever dream of some sort: they're making a God damned Castlevania fighting game.

The game will feature fully-rendered 3D environments and gamers can choose to play as a variety of characters from the Castlevania universe, all designed by manga artist Takeshi Obata. The title will take advantage of the Wii's motion-sensing controls, and wlil be used for attacks and interaction with the game's multiple environments. Additionally, some characters will be able to set traps and control monsters; more zombies in fighting games, thanks.

Konami has confirmed that the game will be playable online with the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection, and will connect with the upcoming DS title, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, to unlock bonus content. Konami hasn't sent along any screens, but we've sent our flying monkeys to their offices; hopefully they'll return with the goods in short order.

Castlevania Judgment will be released this fall. In the meantime, please enjoy the PR speak after the jump.

El Segundo, Calif. – July 1, 2008 – Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. today announced that Castlevania Judgment, the first Castlevania title in the fighting game genre, is currently in development exclusively for Wii™. Developed by legendary Castlevania series producer Koji “Iga” Igarashi, Castlevania Judgment bridges the past with the present as it pits several generations of the Belmont clan against a host of characters that span the franchise’s 22-year history.

“We wanted to take this addition to the signature Konami franchise in a direction that really sets it apart from the previous Castlevania titles in the series,” said Anthony Crouts, Vice President of Marketing for Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. “The Wii Remote™ and Nunchuk capabilities, along with the iconic characters, make this game the ideal entry point into the fighting game genre. This combination is certain to thrill old and new fans of the franchise. “

With 3D environments rendered on Wii, players can choose sides in an epic battle of good versus evil using iconic Castlevania characters designed by famed manga artist Takeshi Obata. Using the motion-sensing controls of the Nunchuk and Wii Remote™, players can slash, stab and whip their way across a variety of stages and environmental elements with various surrounding objects as weapons. Select characters can also set traps and make use of monsters on the field to achieve victory in a clash of epic proportions. As an added bonus, players are also able to compete head-to-head using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection™ and connect with Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia on the Nintendo DSÔ to unlock bonus gameplay content.

People bitch now, but what they're bitching for is another half ass 3D Castlevania on their home consoles, because do you really think Konami would spend the money on a big time 2D project?

Bottom line, you're not going to be happy either way.

I'm looking forward to this just due to its different nature.

I...I really don't know what to say. I'm torn. On one hand, it could be a cool spin-off of the series. On the other hand...no, it won't be a cool spin-off of the series.

Please bring a brand-new 2D Castlevania to a next-gen system. Please?

Yeah, what 3vbo said. Whats up with some companies, but some pencil on paper, gad damns it! Then put another piece of paper over that and draw a little over to the left! Keep doing that and you get some animation.

Very odd. It'd be funny though if it turned out actually decent, since the Wii's only "current" (as in non-compilation) fighter is SSBB.

Definitely not touching it unless the reviews are good for it, though.

The Wii has Guilty Gear XX Accent Core. Sure, it's not exactly brand new and its just an update to a 4-5 year old fighter, but it's damn fun... with the right controller.

What 3vbo said too.

Also, FUCK YOU Igarashi, are you RETARDED? Do you need us to DRAW what we want? Just look at Bionic commando rearmed and get. a. clue.

I'm sorry if I offended someone, I tried to get a better wording for like 2 minutes, but the other ones don't express my feelings.

I'm praying that Iga decided to go ahead with this game just to show people how stupid waggle whips really will be. His master plan is to lay a 3D Castlevania shit stain so he can go back to making amazing 2D top sellers and stop being pestered by stupid people telling him to make a next gen title.

Thats my hope anyway :)

Waggle motion controls, this game is gonna be AWESOME, solely because of how much is going to suck.

I really think you guys are being too harsh, and to a degree unrealistic. You say you want a new 2D Castlevania on home consoles, but wake up and ask yourselves, would such a 2D game sell in todays market, against the Gears, GTAs etc? I don't think it would, since the market has changed much from those 2D focused PS1/Saturn days. Guilty Gear is a cool game, but did it really bring home the bacon in sales? Probably not.

Why do you guys think all recent Castlevania games have been on PSP and DS? Because its you same people that didn't buy Castlevania 3D games on PS2, and these 2D action games work better on handhelds (also cue Contra and Lunar Knights). So far they have been a success for Konami, and they don't come easy for them.

I have high hopes for this new direction Konami are taking. You guys should be too, or do you just want more MGS, Pro Evo? More of the same is a fine paradise island, if your name is EA. However, Konami have taken hits from the deminishing arcade sector over the years, so they have to be careful with what they create. With the absence of SFIV or SCIV on Wii, there's plenty of room for Castlevania Judgement to breathe and possibly succeed.

Open your minds, people. I'm sure its some of you same people that never gave Boom Blox or SFIV a chance, and both games were cool in the end. Konami deserve a chance to show us what they've got too. Hopefully, E3 will shed some more light on CJ. I know I'll be looking forward to it, and its a damn sight better than more casual mini games shit.

Don't like, don't buy, spoilt fuckers.

Kudos, Iga. Kudos.

Remember, kids. Playing with whips fucks up with your head. Waggle and figthing games just don't work that well. Fighting games require finesse and precision. I own a Wii, I love it, but hey, to each his own. That's just a cruel way to let down all your fans. I think we should just crucify and burn whoever had this sorry idea.

And do not forget:In case it turns out good, I never said that, them internets lie.

Meh, I don't care either way, they already turned the series into a dirty whore, I'm tired of playing 'Symphony of the Night' clones and the 3D games just plain sucked.

I hope I can has next-gen Castlevania on my PStriple.
I hope that Iga realizes he could do a pretty kick-ass, flashy 2D Metroid-vania for the PSN.

I think what happened is that Iga was going to pitch a mind-blowingly awesome 2D Castlevania game for the Wii, but he decided to start out by telling a bad joke.

Too bad for him that he told the joke with too straight a face and the Konami executives thought it was his real idea. Being totally oblivious to reality, the execs heard "Motion controls" and "fighting game" and started excitedly talking about how much money this amazing new idea would earn. When Iga tried to interrupt and tell them it was a joke, he was hushed and pushed out of the room.

So now he's being forced to make a joke game and the real game is just going to have to wait.

This is what I believe, because it is what I MUST believe.

castlevania has yet to have a good 3D version and this piece of crap will be no exception thank god its on the wii. Companies need to bring back their 2D classics in beautiful HD with hi res sprites i'm pretty sure such games would sell nicely over PSN/XBOXlive. Could you imagine another good castlevania SOTN style (not those damn gameboy clones), super metroid, Star Ocean (oh wait that one is happening mmm psp), guitly gear (well blublaze is coming), etc you get my point theres still plenty of room for beautiful 2D in this age of stunning 3D titles. Who here doesnt have some nostalgia for their favorite titles of old?

"all designed by manga artist Takeshi Obata."

After reading that, I literally face palmed. WTF are they thinking!?! I read the NP article for Order of Eclessia, and Iga says something like "We know the fans weren't happy with the anime art style, so we went with another artist" Knowing this, how the hell could they think it would be a good idea to let a manga artist do the designs.
