Are you guys all over the shock that Konami's Castlevania: Judgment for the Wii is a fighting game starring your favorite characters from the Castlevania universe? Well I have some news for you, according to the game's producer Koji Igarashi, it's not a fighter -- it's an action fighting ... game ... thing.

OK, never mind what Igarashi and Konami want us to refer to as the game as. Plain and simple, Judgment is a fighter. At least that's the impression I got when I went hands-on with the game yesterday. The build playable at Konami's media event was the same one on display at this year's E3, with only three of the game's 14 characters playable -- Simon Belmont, Maria Renard, and Alucard.

More after the jump.

The gameplay is surprisingly simple, with all attacks mapped to the waggling of the Wii Remote; by holding down B or A (or a combination of the two), I was able to different combinations of attacks. One thing of note: whether you waggle up, down, left, or right it doesn't matter -- you'll still unleash the same moves, and simply shaking the remote will result in a reasonably impressive-looking combo.

You can move freely in the game's 3D environments using the Wii nunchuck, jumping and blocking with the C and Z buttons. Various items and collectibles are scattered in the environments as well; one particular had interactive candelabras that could be destroyed and would reveal hearts used to power the game's "sub-weapons." These sub-weapons were chosen before entering a match. A knife and the boomerang-like cross could be chosen for Simon; an axe and holy water for Alucard; and the cross and holy water for Maria.

For better or for worse, it seems like Judgment was most definitely created with the Wii in mind. To that end, it's not surprising to find that it's not an intense hardcore title along the lines of Sega's Virtua Fighter.

I'd imagine Castlevania fans will get a kick out of seeing their favorite characters battling it out in the different areas, one of which includes a field of interactive attacking zombies. Or they'll feel like Konamia has bastardized their series because well, gamers are never truly happy, are they? Either way, fans might want to pick it up anyhow -- the game will connect to the upcoming Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia for the Nintendo DS to unlock bonus content.

Castlevania Judgment will be available this November, exclusive for the Wii.

Wtf they made this a fighting game? Hm... it doesn't look that bad for a fighting game at least.

I think he was referring to Street fighter/soulcaliber with lots of complex combo's.

Can't wait for the DS game though, but i will need this game to unlock all content >_<

I just get tingly every time I hear that there are 14 characters. I just hope my man Eric Lacarde is around to represent.

Oh lordy, this is looking sexy. Might be time soon to dust off the Wii.

As much as I love Castlevania (SotN especially) no way in hell am I picking this stinker up. Even if the gameplay is awesome (which from all indications it sure isn't) and the visuals stellar (I admit they do look good...for a Wii title), picking this up will only encourage Konami to make more stupid decisions like this in the future...

What next? Snake skateboarding...oh wait...

@mr gilder: eric is pretty sweet.

so this sounds like a power stone/ergheiz type fighting game. well ill take that over a street fighter-esque castlevania. i still want iga to know though, i think a standard, back to their roots castlevania similar to all the pre symphony of the night games would have been pure genius. straight forward stages with secret paths that lead you to hidden stages. no swords, guns, or axes as primary weapons.... just a whip that you level up through out the whole game, the vampire killer. maybe a second or hidden character with a sword or spear that you level up. holy water, axes, knives, etc for secondary weapons. actual stages instead of one long stage. and huge, awesome sprites ala warioland shake it.. and we'd have one more success for "core gaming" on the wii.

Yeah because Castlevania was never "fighting" related...

@shouryuuken,
It's a shame that there isn't going to be like the ones on the Snes/nes/Sega/PC-engine.
They are awesome indeed.

I am genuinely excited for CV:OoE on my DS. Waggle CV fighting with unrecognizable characters? Not so much.

I'd like to see Grant DaNasty on this game for sure. I imagine being able to hop on someone's shoulders and beat them in the head, kinda like the guy on the roller skates in Streets of Rage... 2, was it?

Yeah it could be bearable but if they'd pushed for 4 players like Powerstone 2 could get away with being shallow and still be fun. Right now it looks like a bargain bin buy.

That's pretty amazing that Roth's here. His NES Tips vids are brilliant. As for Castlevania Judgement, it can die in a fire (I fear change).

I probably won't be playing this at all, but at least it's good to see my man Alucard again.

As long as Capcom denies me 'Power Stone 3,' this will have to suffice.
