Konami frightens with 13 new Silent Hill: Homecoming screens

8:24 AM on 04.25.2008, Nick Chester 46 comments

     Xbox 360

Konami has released an unlucky 13 new screenshots for the next Silent Hill title, the recently christened Silent Hill: Homecoming. They feature everything you'd expect -- fog, gaunt weirdos with sunken cheeks, a creepy playground, a monster coming out of the ground. Yup, definitely Silent Hill.

As some of you may know, the series has been handed over to California-based developer The Collective. It's unfortunate that their body of work is so spotty, consisting mostly of television and film licensed titles, including the Dirty Harry game which will never see the light of day. They did make Buffy: The Vampire Slayer for the Xbox, which to this day remains one of my favorite Buffy console games out of the two that were released.

Silent Hill: Homecoming has been confirmed to be coming to Europe this September for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. For what it's worth, the North American arm of GameStop is currently listing the game for a 2009 release, so you may want to start saving those import dollars.

I really want this... Europe gets it before us... which is cool for them! =)

Europe might get it early? That's a turn up for the books. See, Konami can f'n manage it.

Anyway, I am still holding out hope for this game, even if a lot of gamers wanna shit on it already. My main fear is that they seem to want to just copy a lot of past stuff. The story reminds me of Silent Hill 2 and a lot of visuals seem ripped from the movie. I know The Collective has a lot of SH fans in it, but I don't want this to end up as just a big fanwank.

Along with Jim on this one; kinda concerned if they are following like a puppy dog. But with the 3 main entries in SH, each having their own originality; its going to have to take off those "training wheels".

And the outlook most of us have right now; trading hands can either be a win, or ultimate fail. This project may just be the stepping stone, The Collective needs.

I'm also with Jim, I'm concerned that this is going to do fewer new things than usual. I'm a big fan of the series, but I don't want it to be ruined by another dev team's ideas of what they think the game should be about, and I don't want it to be the same thing again because well that's just dull. A nice medium would be nice. And overloading with fog is not approved of >_>

And go Europe for getting some breaks recently. Huzzah.

Double Helix, not The Collective, remember? They were merged with Shiny. :P

Could be good, we'll see.

Capcom are still trumping this series with RE though.

Konami seem stuck with what to do with Silent Hill. I'd prefer they created something else, as they really need to raise their game.

Don't forget this Silent Hill has to go up against RE5, Fatal Frame 3 and Heavy Rain. I'm not fancying Konami's chances, but please prove me wrong. Looks okay.

David Boring: Yeah I too find the graphics a little meh. But maybe it's better when animated. Like SF4 that's way better in motion than in screenshots.

Unimpressive screens, developers I have virtually no faith in, and a series that took a serious downturn in quality with its last outing makes me very sceptical of this. This is going to have to pull a shitload out to compete with alone in the dark and RE5.

there's something wrong with these screens... they look like silent hill 4. the previous videos and screens are ten times better than these. and compared to RE5, geesh...

hope the game can deliver something new to the Silent Hill franchise.

that you're a biased site and you admire the 360 so you shoot cheap shots at ps3 exclusives?

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE GUD GRAPHIX GAIZ.

I honestly think the only scary SH game was the first one, and that was partly BECAUSE of the poor graphics. I'm more scared of things I can't see and can't understand than of the grossest, glossiest HD bullshit they can spew at me.

I don't have very high hopes for this, because of how much the series directors have been talking about WE FARMED THIS TO THE US BECAUSE THEY MAKE BETTER GRAPHICS, completely ignoring the fact that, in general, we epicly fail at horror. I'll still buy it day 1 and play it to death, because I just <3 SH that much, but I honestly don't think this will be even half as good as SH1 or 3.

I see no normal maps on any of the screenshots, so either they are retarded and want this to look like a Wii game, or their marketing department sent out those screenshots before they were looked over by the art director (as is usually the case). Personlly Im not impressed, I hope they bump up the looks because i cant tell if that zombie is in water or if hes part of a marble floor.

Are you sure these aren't screenshots for a Wii version? The lighting looks better than a PS2 but the texture are complete crap. And the polygon count is really low. Something seems wrong...

Stupid round-eye team is going to blow it. I have no faith in 99% of American game developers, especially when they get their chubby little sausage fingers on great intellectual property such as Silent Hill. Though I'm sure these are rough shots with low res textures, the game will look fine. The end result just won't have that special attention that was taken into consideration for every little detail as the Japanese developers did. Just wait and see!

The American-based Climax, developers of Silent Hill: Origins, did a good job. The location of the developers doesn't mean shit.

However, neither The Collective or Shiny did anything noteworthy in the last few years.

If you guys notice, they completely changed Alex from giving him nice hair to the new flat commando hair as seen in the screens. It seems they somewhat downgraded his appearance entirely for some odd reason.

Perhaps these screenshots were taken on a different platform than the old. Perhaps they were having FPS trouble...

Not all screenshots are taken at their highest resolution, this looks like 720p. Developers usually use this resolution to preview and code out the game. Once it's ready, then they start working on the video stuff to scale it up if they have extra power not being used. I'm sure once they get the scaling to 1080p going, it will look a lot better.

Hah. Ok at first i was like, oh gee people getting nitpicky about graphic. But Ya! Totally correct! WAY low end. I think that's an early build they are showing. I sure hope so at least. Else I'll be disappointed. I don't demand much in graphics, but better than that for 360/ps3.

The working game is not using any 720p or 1080p resolution -- these are straight screenshots from in-game, which would be from a computer or developer kit. In the game industry they use resolution and texture mipmapping commands to sort out all the lighting and everything. These are basically just blurry previews of the =actually made= high resolution textures.
