Konami cans Gradius VI, numerous others photo

Like a nail through my heart, Konami has closed the lid on several of its PS3 and Wii titles, including -- may God have mercy on their souls -- the PS3 incarnation of its timeless Gradius series, presumably the sixth. Also on the chopping block was Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball (PS3) and other long-awaited titles like New Action Game (PS3), New Role-Playing Game (PS3), and Role-Playing Game (Wii). Axed before they could even be named. Such is the way of things, I suppose.

One can only hope that this latest development in the ongoing saga of Developers Trying to Coax Me Into Killing Myself (available in hardback at booksellers nationwide as soon as, say, Grasshopper disbands or Beyond Good and Evil's sequel finally arrives as a DOAX-style boobs-and-beaches extravaganza) is only a sign that Gradius will be moving to another platform. 360? Wii? I don't care. Just put Treasure at the trigger and get me my friggin' Gradius

Yamamura: Here's the remaining list of titles in development for the PS3 and Wii. I'd dig up the Xbox list, but-- ah, hell, I'm sleepy.

# Pro Baseball Spirits Series (PS3)
# Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3)
# World Soccer Winning Eleven Series (PS3)
# Music Simulation Game (Wii)
# New Action Adventure Game (Wii)
# Sports Game -- Soccer (Wii)
# Sports Game -- Baseball (Wii)

Wow, 50% of the PS3 titles were cancelled, that's not good news. I hope it isn't financial issues for Konami, they are one of my favorite companies.

Was it Capcom or Konami that's thinking of doing licensed material again? They both made some pretty good movie-based crap in the past.

Konami made the sweet X-men and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade beat-em-up games in the late 80s, early 90s.

Capcom was the one who said they want to do more movie licensed games.

I think the Wii will get Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball. It makes more sense. The title is huge in japan so they not going to drop it, it doesn't need none of the PS3 its horse power and swing a bat is done before on the Wii.

I hope they arent in any trouble, maybe they are just trying to concentrate on a few select games rather than working on a ton much more slowly.

As long as they don't do what Capcom did and disband one of their more promising studies like Kojima studios. Capcom made a bad decision getting rid of Clover and I don't want Konami doing the same.

Hmm, surely we'll see Gradius again. I know this will seem like blasphemy, but I'd be interested in seeing if they could translate it to 3D after seeing that screen in the article title (not sure what that is from, but its cool nonetheless). Of course, 2D shooters do need to live on but we need some good 3D ones too, and those Gradius developers know their shooters...

Didn't Konami poo poo this news today? I thought I recalled reading that they contacted a bunch of major japanese gaming outlets and stated that no games were cancelled.
