Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was one of the most hyped and covered game releases of the year, yet funnily enough, the mastermind behind Solid Snake's PlayStation 3 adventure has little love for massive ad campaigns.
Kojima's complaints have been found in a job opportunity offer for Kojima Productions. Here's what the mad genius had to say:
The creativity of video games is now on the verge of crisis. Massive advertising campaigns are executed for games before their entertainment values are put into consideration all too often, resulting in sell-off tactics happening without hesitation.
While we all know that over-exposure can harm a game, it certainly didn't do any damage to Guns of the Patriots. Kojima is correct that hype is far too widespread these days, but he can't deny that his own game rode the exposure train all the way to the bank.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
He sure can't but then again he's Kojima, if it were anybody else the massive dose of hype might of had a crushing effect.
He does'nt realise his fucking game cost millions to produce and develop, how on earth else are people going to buy the game if they don't know about it? Does he really think Konami would pour millions into the project and let him run loose? Then lose millions by bowing down to his ridculous views on advertising? Hell no, tey want thier damn money.
Also, why is'nt he complaining about the big fat paycheck he gets after making the MGS games? I'm sorry to have to say this but he's being a hypocrite. :(
*Negative*, *ridiculous*, *they*
Damn spelling mistakes.
Im just now seeing MGS4 commercials, I never saw MGS3, MGPO, or MGA!, and I watch TV like I breath.
Or maybe my cable box has a shit filter for commercials, who knows.
Also, Fringe is awesome.
There's a difference between letting people know about a game, and going over the top with it.
Look at STALKER - it didn't exactly lag in sales, but I didn't see goddamn TV commercials and get spammed with various adds for it. Same goes for Deus Ex, or Team Fortress 2. The ridiculous Halo things are really unnecessary, for example.
You do have a valid point, but I live in the U.K,
and over here, I did see the ads for the game, but not the mass advertising Kojima goes on about. There were a few ads, yes, but nothing over he top. There were few TV ads as well, but nothimg to write home about.
Now the Halo stuff, I saw a damn poster on nearly every bus in manchester for that game. That game was advertised a lot.
@grafkhun - That's a joke comment, right? You can't be serious. There's no fucking way in hell you can be serious.
@Daxelman - "Or maybe my cable box has a shit filter for commercials, who knows."
If it does, you better let me know about how to get one :)
Even if you call shenanigans on that, the image has been there since at least December 2006 (for some reason, the image might disappear after the page fully loads).
About his specific sentiments, though, perhaps he was feeling extremely pressured about delivering on "MGS4's" status as a mega-monster huge PS3 title.
