Kojima: There is 'no greater crime' than a game delay photo

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was recently delayed, and Hideo Kojima is not a happy little elf. Apologizing to his fans, the eccentric director has claimed there is no greater crime than a delayed game, and demonstrates that he takes this postponement very seriously indeed.

"I always preach to the staff, 'You must not have a delay after a release date has been announced. There is no greater crime as a game developer," he writes. "Official announcement of a release date is nothing less than a promise to fans and business partners. In other words, a release date change is like betraying the expectations of everyone.

"It probably takes a long time to earn back trust that has been lost. However we will work hard, with the hope that we will one day earn the support of everyone again. At present, Kojima Productions is putting our full efforts on final tuning and brush ups, in aim of completion."

Considering most developers and publishers don't seem to give a crap when they announce a delay, Kojima probably doesn't have to worry too much about trust. The very fact he even apologized is a step classier than most. Don't take it too hard, Hideo, we're all with you!

And this is the reason why he is one of my favorite game designers.

I'm just hoping they fix the controlls for Peace Walker, as the demo was horrid.

Still, he's one of the best in the business, Kojima is a top top craftsman.

No, I think the greatest crime a developer can do is sell a half-assed game that had a lot of potential, but was poorly executed due to time constraints. If your going to do something, do it right.

I can just imagine those poor Japanese developers, thinking about suicide in their office in which they are spending most of their time. Death before dishonor!

Yea this is dumb. I would rather have a game delayed so it is finished properly. People will be happy you kept the release date at first if you prematurely publish a game, but soon fans will be pissed and investors will be be pissed because sales will drop of that broken/unfinished game.

Geez Kojima. I like that you take your business so seriously but you shouldn't be so hard on yourself. A simple apology would suffice.

I would think releasing content cut from the main game as priced DLC is the worst crime.
But Hideo is very classy 'bout this.

Oh Kojima, you should know you can't do anything wrong. I'll buy your games day one, delayed or not.

Delaying by a 1 to 6 months I can usually live with, usually it's somthing to do with giving it a bit more polish or getting the games out at a better period in the year
...but when they start delaying it by a year I have to think why on earth did they bother giving out a release date in the first place?
I wish they would over estimate or just give no release date at all.

Its more like he just knows what a bunch of whiny bitches gamers are and did this as a pre-emptive strike. I grew up with Zelda games getting delayed two or three times just because Nintendo couldn't allocate enough chips to publish at the time.

Gamers could just grow the fuck up, but we all know that's asking too much. Shit happens, stuff gets delayed - that's life. No apologies needed.

Nice, but not needed. Its not like it was going to affect my decision to purchase it anyway.

I agree with 20happyballs's comment.I do not mind a delay, but only with these conditions:

1)It is not to prolong a game's release until a certain selling point, like Christmas and such.

2)Refining takes place in the prolonged period.

3)As long a release date is not set, delays are allowed,or else it will discourage people from buying the game.

Anyways,a tip of my hat to Mr.Kojima.Apologies are always accepted.

Man if Hideo is going nuts over a delay of a month....

I cant imagine what the boys over at Obsidian are doing since Alpha Protocol got delayed by what....8 or 9 months?

Fucking Sega..I was so looking forward to that, now I just have a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach....

Delaying a game is the second greatest crime. Doing so and not making it worth the wait is the greatest.

I remember Kojima was also really remorseful over the MGS4 delay, he does take this shit seriously. Perhaps Kojima should work at valve for a little bit.

There's no greater crime than releasing a broken and unfinished game because pride kept you from delaying it.

In reality, there's no worse crime than the inexistence of ZoE 3.
Seriously Kojima, I love you and all that, but Metal Gear will be your undoing.

Rushing a game for the release date is the greatest crime. Delaying isn't a problem if the developers are still working out the kinks. As I'm sure Kojima's team is doing.

Speaking of kinks, I hope the finished game does something about that damned camera. It's ridiculous having to use the same thumb for movement and aiming.

I thought Portable Ops was way too easy and simplistic in terms of game play, so I think the more delay, the better. However I rather frightened by the prospect of an army of Snakes, whether I'm the one directing it or not.

I dunno, being the only retard on the web to give your 9.1 metascored game a 4.5 discrediting their own networks review articles to the rest of the industry is pretty big in my book.

Yeah, because everyone is going to have the same exact view on any given game. Fact.

If I had the chance to review any given Halo or God of War game, I'd have given them similarly low scores. Different strokes for different folks.

And what does that have to do with Kojima apologizing for delaying his game?
Seriously stop, he didn't like the game, deal with it.

The only crime greater than a delay is comming out with a crappy game. How consumers react to delays depends on your relationship with them.

There is no greater crime. Except for releasing a bad game. Which Kojima does quite consistently.

Whilst I do think that it sucks when developers announce a release date and then just completely ignore it and delay their game, I would say that a bigger crime in game development is to release an unfinished, broken game when there is the option to delay it and finish it up.

@DJP3DRO: and what do you base this "bad game" pattern of Kojima on?
Last I checked, he's a director who offers the player an infinite greater option in gameplay, story, and design.

Developers shouldn't announce a release date if they don't think they can finish the game by then. The alternative isn't having an unfinished game, it's giving themselves more time with which to pollish it by anticipating production delays when judging a release date.

The man's got integrity. But ZOE3!...

Actually, that's really good of him, but I must disagree. There is no greater crime than allowing a game like Sonic '06 to be released. Or The Bouncer. Nuff' said.

I don't really know how the controls can go wrong when they are customizable...

I can't stand Portable Ops because I like aiming with my face buttons. It just doesn't work right for me, so I was very happy with the demo of Peace Walker. So sue me.
Kojima is a man of honor. He wants a respectable product by everyone yet doesn't want to make empty promises. I'll always be a fan.
