Kojima talks MGS4, HD, multiplatform photo

Lord of all things Metal Gear and otherwise awesome fellow Hideo Kojima sat down at the kids' table (read: GamePro) to answer a couple of questions about the upcoming PS3-seller, Metal Gear Solid 4. Most of the questions were aimed at drilling out those last bits and pieces of unknown or plot-related MGS4 information which, natch, Kojima declined to answer. A couple of key tidbits can be culled from the interview, however, including the following on Kojima's stance on the HD revolution:

GP: Is 1080p a goal for Metal Gear Solid 4? Do you think 1080p is an important feature to have?

Kojima: In that sense, the answer is simple: we're not really insistent on sticking to HD. We're not the ones who are saying we want HD. We want something really pretty on a very small screen. But 360 and PS3 don't allow that because HD is kind of a must-have. I'm not interested, myself, about HD at all. Because if it gets prettier and prettier with more details, that means more mistakes [on the game development side] ... once we create graphics in a scene, we deliberately make them look dirtier to give the atmosphere more life. My team and I think that high-res is not needed for the next two or three years.

And while MGS4 has not yet been confirmed to appear on any platform other than its native PS3, Kojima touched upon the possibility of working on other platforms in the post-MGS4 future:

GP: Is MGS4 still planned as an exclusive PS3 game? Do you have any interest in Xbox 360 development?

Kojima: Well, yes, I do have strong interest in creating something for the Xbox 360. In the US and Europe, it is selling, and I think it will sell a lot this year as well. I'm a fan of Gears of War as well, it's very interesting. Frankly speaking, I want to create something on the PC. It's a multi-platform [format]. I've been regularly studying work on the PC anyways, and I want to provide something as a world-wide platform because of the consequences with timing on the PlayStation platforms, MGS4 is actually for the PS3 only so far.

"So far"? Intrigue! Speculation aside, MGS4 should be hitting the PS3 sometime this year; meanwhile, let's all cross our fingers for some quality 360/Wii exclusive announcements in the near future.

What will he make?

If he does PC, I'd really be happy if he managed to get a Mac or Linux version of it, so I can play it in the OS's I like most. But that's being very hopeful, when Kojima hasn't made desktop PC games (PC-98 comes to mind, Snatcher was there first) for a VERY long time, even if MGS1 (and maybe 2, not sure) did come to PC, MGS isn't what you'd think of when talking PC games. Still, I'd be just as happy to see more non-PS3 games from him, because that system is far beyond my economic reach.

Be nice to see something on the 360 and especially the Wii but if I had to pick I'd go for the PC. Would be nice to see a developer like this run on a system that doesn't impose strict design limitations.

Also very surprising he'd mention the PC.

I wouldn't be really all too surprised if MGS4 came out for the 360, but I would be surpised if it hit within 1 1/2-2 years of the PS3 MGS4's release.

MGS1 and MGS2 came to the PC, mgs3 didn't.

Wonder what he will make, it seems it's not MGS4, but a new game.

I feel same as Magesx. It seems like this time around Kojima is very willing to go multiplatform, well at least with the 360 (not sure how you'd port this game to the Wii and have it be a success...). The question is: How long after its released for the PS3 will it be on the 360?

Oh and PS3 fanboys shouldn't even care, they're getting an awsome game anyways, its not like having it being released on another console makes YOUR version any less awesome.

Having it released on another console DOES matter. It knocks away another justification for spending $600 when $400 would do it.

MGS4 for Wii? That would probably look so ugly in a side by side comparison...

The people who payed for the 600 dollar console should have known that most of that extra 200 dollars went into the blu-ray. Its not rocket-science, and the PS3 is still a very powerful and (will be) successful machine.

With the HD-DVD addon for the 360, 360 owners will end up paying $600 as well (if they so choose to want an HD-DVD player).. Sony just made it come with Blu-Ray..

I thought his HD comments were interesting.. They would dirty up scenes to make them more realistic, but now because of the clarity of HD it could pose problems in design & development.. Oh and MGS4 on the 360 would be awesome.. Sony would have to throw a boatload of money at Konami to keep it exclusive to the PS3.. Maybe he's using this "intriguing" interview to steal more money from Sony..

Why assume the 360, Wii or PC wouldn't get a totally new franchise? If the guy wants to work on a different format I'm sure he's not going to get all excited about porting an existing title.

Stop talkin' and start workin'. It seems like it takes him over three years to make a game. I guess we can expect these new games in 2010. Man, I wished I liked Metal Gear. I just can't get into it, I've tried and tried but there's something about the games that drives me nuts.

I remember everyone going nuts about metal gear solid for the ps1. It was cool, but I beat it in 5 fucking hours. And two of those hours was storytelling. I also completely suck at videogames so it wasn't a speed run. After that, I just soured on the series. I give em all a try though because they look so damn awesome.

It'll be intresting to see if this game comes out in 1080p.
I highly doubt it because PS3 Memory system is a bottleneck. Sony touted cell and RSX as being powerful.. they were right.. unfortunately they have a memory system that can't take full advantage of the hardware.

I wish they would've used an embeded memory like 360. Sony GPU bandwidth is 24 write and 15 read. Xbox 360 is 24 read and write.. but to the 10 MB embeded memory 360 has a staggering 256 GB bandwidth ! So far no video cards have embeded ram yet.. not even high end gaming ones for PC's.. mainly because it drives up cost.

I wish Sony would've worked out something with Nvidia to do this. Im not real happy with my PS3 so far and My 360 is being used heavily. Im going to try a Wii when I can get one.

Let me clarify above.. Sony GPU bandwidth is 24 GB write/ 15 GB read per second.. Xbox 360 24 Write/24 Read GB per second for regular video RAM.. but 256 GB per second for the embeded ram..

He always said he wanted to make a PC game, he also said that his team was not very excited about that idea. I think its great that he wants to go to other platform but please no more MGS. I got nothing against the series, I just don't want that guy to get old with the only thing he's really know for are those MGS titles.

If it wasn't for some crazy Europeans fans who gave him dead threats MGS4 wouldn't even be made by him. The idea was with the series that he passes on the MGS to the younger team members who've learned from him but the poor guy is still doing MGS and I'm afraid this won't be his last one.

As for what game on the PC that zombie MMO that he's been talking about would be a great start, maybe he should work a bit on the fee thing for that game.

In an interview with Jack Tretton, CEO of SCEA, in GameInformer he responded in this way when asked about losing exclusives:

"It has always been our philosophy that we earn support from publishers; we dont but it. That's in contrast to some other publishers that feel that it's important to lock down strategic relationships with software publishers--if they have to buy it, so be it."

He then mentions in the next question that they do lend "marketing support" but they've "never paid for exclusivity on any platforom for any piece of software".

If Sony's not ponying up for these exclusives, and Microsoft is... we may very well see MGS4 go the way of the 360.

Isn't Kojima working on 'Project S' for the Wii?

Rumours, he and Suda51 set down on in his podcast and discussed it. Suda is busy right now with No More Heroes and Kojima with MGS4. who knows what's next, I for one hope it's becomes a reality.

Well won't the PS3 and the 360 be around in "the next two or three years"? As with a lot of newly released technology, the uses are limited now, but the market will eventually level out. Don't worry, HD will be standard soon enough.

I can see small, cheap 12 inch HDTVs in the future.

And Kojima won't port MGS4 to anything but the PS3 for a while, if not ever. Trust me.

Well, MGS1 and 2 came out on PC, as did MGS2 Substance and, I think, MGS3 Subsistence. Also one of the versions of MGS2 is available on Xbox. So MGS is as much a Playstation exclusive as Resident Evil 4 was on Gamecube, meaning it may come out on the system first, but generally appears on a different format later.

I'll be very interested to see what Kojima and friends produce for other formats be it a port of Metal Gear, a long overdue follow up to Snatcher, or something completely new. Generally you know if Kojima was involved then it will be good.
