Kojima's 'Top 15 Films' hint that he probably really likes Spike TV photo

Japanese media retailer Tsutaya is running a Metal Gear Solid promotion online, listing the 15 favorite films of developer Hideo Kojima, the creative mind behind Konami's popular series.

The list (spotted by Siliconera) is heavy on the Western action films, and reads like a Spike TV weekend "Movies for Guys Who Like Movies" marathon:

  • The Guns of Navarone
  • The Great Escape
  • Goldfinger
  • 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • Planet of the Apes (original work)
  • The Deer Hunter
  • Dawn of the Dead
  • Full Metal Jacket
  • Predator
  • Die Hard
  • Heat
  • Black Hawk Down
  • Children of Men
  • Bourne Series
  • 007 Casino Royale

It's hard to argue with any of these, as they're all great examples of solid, action/suspense cinema. It is a bit disappointing that there are no real curveballs on this list, though. It's not that surprising, though; while Kojima's work is always well-crafted, they're relatively pretty transparent in terms of media that influenced it.

Can you make all of the connections between these films and Metal Gear Solid, Snatcher, or Kojima's other works?

I'm dumbfounded that Escape from New York isn't on his list.

I saw this list on Kotaku and alot of people where writing comments that there is no Escape From New York. I would have to agree with them, where is Escape from New York because Solid Snake is modeled after Plisken (I believe: Kurt Russel) in the film. This doesn't surprise me Kojima loves American action flicks and Snake Eater was pretty much a homage to James Bond.

My thoughts exactly, droobies; Escape is an awesome movie regardless of the Snake connection, so it's odd not to see it listed here.

I don't see how those are Spike TV related. If he liked 24-hour marathons of CSI and Married With Children, and crappy straight-to-video movies with Steven Seagal and Jean Claude Van Dam then yeah I would be a little disturbed.

Also, he damn well better mean the original Dawn of the Dead and not that god-awful remake.

Black Hawk Down?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....

Sorry Kojima, but you need better taste in films... (minus Predator, Die Hard, FMJ & Goldfinger)

I'm surprised Escape isn't in there either.

And I'd agree that Black Hawk Down is trash but Children of Men is simply frickin' fantastic film-making.

It's beautiful, well acted, well made, and it's simply an interesting story.

What droobies said. Funny how this list doesn't contain much gameplay time either!

He's got pretty good taste. 2001 is unequivocally the greatest movie ever made.

Why do people like Black Hawk Down?

Oh come on, GrayFox. 2001 is hella boring, and Harold & Maude is the greatest movie ever made.

Harold and Maude needs more monoliths.

Surprising he left out any eastern films in the list. Films from Asia feature heavily in my favorite films list.

No Star wars?
The Bourne Series? Hmmm not sure about that either TBH.

I guess its his choice though =/

I'm not so sure about this myself. I hated Quantum of Solace, which I read is a sequel to Casino Royale. I haven't seen the latter but I don't imagine it was any better.

Glad to see some 007 movies in there, and two of the best, too.

This is a decent list, if someone were to say ask me what some great slam-bang action movies were. This list does explain so much though in terms of why all the Metal Gears but particularly Guns of the Patriots takes a hard left turn into straight up preposterous at several points.

Am I the only person who hated every minute of Casino Royale? From the hour long casino segment to the lawl worthy ending I just couldn't accept it as a Bond film.

Pretty solid list. Deer Hunter is far from something I'd expect to see on Spike TV.

Surprised to see hate for Children of Men.

Spike TV? You do know that when they show those movies on the air they're edited to shit, right? they dub out all of the swearing, and cut a lot of the essential scenes that make those movies worth watching. Imagine seeing Predator without hearing Arnold saying "You are one ugly mother fucker" at the end of Predator? I honestly cannot stand it when movies I love are edited like that. just rent or buy a DVD of the film so it can be enjoyed like it's supposed to and not made into emotionless piles of crap that they make them to be when they are showed to us on network TV.

Editing for TV RUINS good films.
most of the films Kojima likes would offended him if he saw the Edited for TV cut.
just like me.

It's OK to show people being butchered on TV but don't let us hear you say "fuck" or show us a naked lady! That might make someone go mad! PLEASE! Which is worse, people having sex, or people being mindlessly butchered?

man the FCC needs to readjust their shit.

I also did not like Children of Men. I can appreciate what they did with the shots and all, but it's still a bad movie IMO.
