Metal Gear Solid Raiden Rising is a dumb name for a game. You’d figure the marketing folk would reign in Hideo Kojima’s fascination with the peculiar when it comes to the stuff on the front of a box. Alas, the name doesn’t appear to be changing, but the core Metal Gear gameplay could be. In an (OLD!) interview with GamePro at gamescom, Kojima-san described the title as his pseudo-Frankenstein’s monster, explaining that Kojima Productions is doing a lot of “experiments” for the title.
“We're at an experiment level right now,” he said. “We're doing a lot of experiments for Rising. But let me give you a hint at what's happening at KJP right now. I said this at GDC, as Kojima Productions, and for the Metal Gear Solid series as well, we always want to go to the next step beyond. And how we go up a step is really a big job actually. But what we're doing right now is making totally new, not just an overhaul, engines and A.I.s and things like that,” Kojima said.
Kojima would go on, describing that some of the new changes -- not an overhaul, folks -- involves even management and teams at KJP. Then he said that bit about the PSP team and the Rising team not liking each other too much.
Back to the point: Rising will be a different game and we’re excited to see what kind of experimentation will make it into the final product. We do draw the line at talking scorpions, though. The thought is just too creepy. Remember that, Kojima.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I'm still on the fence about this but I'm getting a Slim anyways so I guess I'll have some MGS action regardless of how suspect Rising looks.
Cheers, now whatever they do I'm going to be disappointed! Nothing they can do will live up to the hope you just filled me with.
*sobs in the corner*
Ninja-death-kill action...it's the whole reason I bought the original VR Missions disc on the PSX in the first place...hopefully it feels like a highly-refined version of Ninja Gaiden, without all of the inherent cheapness involved.
Yeah the only thing exclusive about this is that it was announced at the 360 press conference, but is multiplatform, and not timed at all.
I just hope they don't experiment too much and it ends up hurting the final product. I know that the game will be good, but whether or not it will be great will be different if these "experiments" end up going sour.
"I'm going to tell you all something about the game while not telling you anything about the game."
MGS4 perfected the gameplay, and to see them scrap that for what looks to inevitably be more of an action game similar to Ninja Gaiden just kinda hurts. I'll most likely buy it unless the review scores are ridiculously low, but I wont get my hopes up for a spin-off.
- Raiden has one eye covered, implying a lack of depth perception. This means the game will be 2D.
- The teaser screens from earlier showed stormy fields. This implies a FARMING SIM.
- The tagline is no longer "Tactical Espionage Action" it is "Lighting Bolt Action", so Raiden will be able to move very quickly. Like Sonic.
- Raiden's lower jaw appears to be made of metal, implying that he can eat anything. Like Kirby.
SO we have a 2D farming sim game where you can run fast and eat everything you grow. SOUNDS LIKE A WINNER.
Tactical Espionage Farming?
perhaps you have to infiltrate chicken coops?
