Kojima NOT disappointed with PS3, contextualizes (!) prior quotes photo

Did you hear the one where Hideo Kojima said that the PlayStation 3 was a massive pile of peacock jizz? No? Well that's because he never said it, but it's amazing what subtext you can draw from one innocent quote. Kojima was believed to have been "disappointed" with the PlayStation 3 when he discovered it couldn't make all his ambitions a reality, but the mad genius has come out to provide further context to what was actually said.

Kojima cites crossed wires in the Japanese-to-English translation, and explains that the "disappointment" was not attack on Sony's black box o' Blu-ray (bear in mind this is still a translation, so it's as liable to wire-crossing as the original quote):

"I hate to say this myself, but I am a Japanese man, so I try to be modest, or even more. I don't wish to brag about it to say 'Oh I am the MGS4 guy' or to say 'This is the best one', just like how Americans brag stuff like this I do enjoy myself, but in my mind I still think insufficient of myself.

... Let's say this developer is making a new kind of a car. He claims that this can fly. Now there is no stop when you say 'There is a car that can fly.' When you claim that it can fly, the speculation grows from 'Oh so it can fly?' and the developer would set his goals higher. The speculation is that if the car flies, then it should reach a MACH speed...but it doesn't stop there...it'd go beyond the speculation of then 'it should go into space!' with all the excitement around, the developer would go deeply into making the car going into space...however, he'll come up to the public and say the car reaches the MACH speed, but it fails to go into the space. But he shouldn't give up, because for a car to even reach a mach speed and go into air is revolutionary.

I wished to transfer my thoughts like such, but I guess it didn't work very well"

Ah, Kojima-San, I do love your insane analogies. Basically, the "MGS 4 guy" is saying (possibly? Who even knows?) that he loves what the PlayStation 3 can do, but it just didn't quite reach his own lofty ambitions. He was expecting a space car but got a flying car, and even though he's not eating green cheese on the moon, he is still happy to be flying in his ... what the ... what the Hell were we talking about again?

Look, just to simplify -- Kojima is NOT disappointed with the PS3. That's it, you can all go home now. And no, that doesn't give us license to say "Kojima loves the PS3, hates the 360 and Wii and once told Miyamoto to go f*ck himself," either.

cant wait for this to be released already. i'm expecting something revolutionary and it doesnt appear that i'll be let down. my fondest memories of mgs were fighting psycho mantis, killing sniper wolf, raiden's messed up codec messages, and the old snake getting brutally beat up in mgs3.

Ah, now i see the influence for every conversation i've had with Mei Ling.

"Snake, wise japanese man say that if you buy car that does mach speed into space but you can only fly, then you should fly, because you are still car."

What, aren't you going to be like Kotaku and cry about Hideo correcting everyone's scare mongering? Destructoid will *never* reach the big time with all of this succinct, accurate reporting. :|

personally... I've stopped listening to what Kojima has to say about ANY console. He says one thing, backtracks, says another then another completely different thing and then he does it again.

All I care about from him is his games.

Hell, when you ask them if they want a drink.

And they answer "No really, I'm okay."

Doesn't always mean, "No really, I'm okay". Just give them the damn drink!

And don't forget the car that flies into space!

That's pretty much what I thought when I read his initial comments (the lofty expectations part, not the flying car nonsense).

Kojima was hoping to make it the craziest most mind-blowing experience ever but instead he had to settle for it just being a really good videogame. He would have been "disappointed" no matter what system he was working with.

I mean, seriously, if he was still going off of Sony's ORIGINAL PS3 hype, he could have initially wanted the game to be output on two HD screens at once, both in 1080p and at 120fps but he had to settle for something actually realistic in the end.

In the Hideo Kojima Psychonauts level, the player is naked, and is forced to watch nearly 4 hours of codec friends and family yell at each other(and the player!) The player then must walk past the ghosts of all those he has slain!
Then the player would realize that this game still has enough in common, control wise, with the original Playstation game to make it feel totally obsolete. Then the player would stop playing....and go eat cake.
That level sounds good to me!

Droll: I've never really understood that MGS complaint. I don't really follow how it sharing controls with the original game is a bad thing. Most third person games still map movement to the left thumbstick and jump to the big button on the right -- we'd better go get some cake, that's atari shit up in there.

codec conversations, yeah. Would it have killed them to include a way to skip lines without stopping the audio track?

Because that damn video was an editor's mistake, get over it.

I'm never satisfied with my work, so I completely understan Kojima.
I also understand that if this new title requires me to be pressing about four or five buttons in sequence to kill someone, I'm going to get on the first flight to Japan and stick a Dual Shock 3 up his ass.
And make him waggle his behind trying to play Lair.

Jim's article notwithstanding, I like how nearly every other site reporting on this does exactly what Kojima is griping about - taking what he says out of context.

The TVG article does exactly the same. Out of context his comment about modesty sounds like an insult against western culture instead of him comparing Japan's strong sense of modesty comparatively. The rest of what Kojima says is up on Kotaku as well as a bunch of bitching by their writer.

It explains the quality of MGS4 since much of the budget for making the game was put into auto development.

Oh holy crap I just read the Kotaku piece.

Did Kojima knock up Ashcraft's wife?

There is more of a story in the press reactions than the actual quote.

There was some serious bile against the man just because he felt that he was taken out of context. If he was a world leader I could see things differently but, damn! See if he ever gives an unscripted interview to a US magazine again.

If the PS3 is only able to "make a car reach MACH speed," when it was touted as only being able to "make a car fly," I'd say that's pretty great considering how the last games were on the PS1 and PS2 --- I imagine those systems can only "make a car's engine start" and "make wheels turn" respectively.

Seeing as how the PS1 and PS2 games were fucking amazing, then any improvement (especially beyond what the PS3 was originally slated for) will be beyond fucking amazing!

I'd be tickled if all they did was just release the same gameplay with new graphics and concluding story line... but it seems like they tried to do more. Yay!

It makes perfect sense. Come on, a car that is unable to go at Mach speed sucks. But a car that is able to go at Mach speed is awesome.

Here's a chart for you idiots.

PS1: Normal Car.
PS2: Flying Car.
PS3: Flying Car at Mach Speed.
PS4: ????
PS5: Profit.

Therefore, the Metal Gear Solid series will hit profit when the car can do more than just go at Mach speed and exit our atmosphere. It can probably warp time and space or something.

...

Good God, no wonder this guy is the writer...

@Itchy:

Whooaaaaa, the PS3 is the one labeled as making cars fly, not the PS2.
Kojima is saying they made the PS3 go beyond flying cars to MACH speed, but were still unable to pass through the atmosphere.

That would mean the PS2 games were on a ground restricted vehicle, and the 4th is now on a more capable one.

I am so terribly disppointed in this restrained and utterly fair and balanced reporting. Where's the oomp!? The sensationalism is there for the taking!

Clearly, like certain other sites wisely discerned, Kojima just said that while he does, in fact, not hate the PS3, he totally hates Americans!

Any reporter worth his weight in shit wouldn't just point out this fact, he would then encourage gamers to boycott MGS 4 and it's totally racist xenophobic creator!

"since I still sense some "PS3 sucks" in here."

Then your spider sense must be broken. Not once, in my whole career, have I said the "PS3 sucks." Sony kind of sucks, but so do Microsoft and Nintendo (they're all assholes in their own special way) but the worst thing I have said about the hardware is that it was an "investment." Even that's becoming less true as the investment is starting to see some returns.

So, no idea where you sensed that "PS3 sucks" idea.
