Kojima hard at work on two titles, wants to compete with the West photo

I love the Metal Gear series, and MGS4 was a great send-off for Solid Snake, but I'm itching to see what else Hideo Kojima is capable of. Hopefully we will see some new flavors on Kojima's menu, as he is directing not one but two new videogames at the time of writing.

As discussed in the latest Famitsu, the first game Kojima is working on will be made in a style similar to his previous work, while the second yet-to-be-announced title is developed with a restructured Kojima Productions and has the Western market firmly in mind.

Kojima compares Western game development to Hollywood, taking note of the fact that Western games are made to appeal to the entire world. With that in mind, Kojima Productions is in the midst of a makeover "from the ground up" as the Metal Gear mastermind plans to compete on a worldwide stage and match the best that America and Europe has to offer.

Sounds terrific. Kojima has already done a masterful job with his Metal Gear games and if he is using Western advancement to drive his own team to greater heights, that can only mean grand things for the audience.

It's so weird to me when Japanese developers say they want to be more like Western developers. It's like hearing that the best sushi place in town is trying to be more like Burger King.

I'd like to see a new Zone of the Enders, but I highly doubt that'll happen.

Well, if MGS4 is any indication, he's going to continue to do great things. I wonder if part of the "more western" means less cut scenes, since I've seen a lot of people bitching about them. I actually enjoyed them.

The only cutscenes I had an issue with in MGS4 were the mission briefings. They were boring. The rest of it was fine.

Chiming in with RaiRed and Sho Nuff, this emphasis on Western style really has me super depressed that I'm probably never going to see another Zone of the Enders. This is a real shame, as 720p Jehuty jetting around would blow my mind.
There is no doubt that whatever Kojima works on will be something worth seeing . . . but a part of me will never forget the longing.

@ Jim Sterling

I agree the briefings almost felt like either they were tacked on at the end, or they were the first part made. Even the ability to roam about as mini-rex got old. Especially if you contrast it to the more action packed scene like that first part with Raiden and the Cow-bots.

So many people in general seem to want more Zone of Enders, but no one at Konami seems to realize/acknowledge it.

Count me in too :(

Love him or hate him, Kojima has a long way to go to compete with western developers. Apart from Metal Gear, nothing he has done has had more than a niche appeal.

Maybe if they created or developed another IP, and stop riding the Metal Gear pony into the ground, he might be an inspiration to other eastern developers to do the same.

It would be nice to walk into a store and buy a game from an eastern developer that didn't make me cringe for a change.

Its encouraging to hear him say this kind of thing, how it will play out should prove interesting. I'm all for japanese developers that really try and realise there is actually a problem, with them still stuck in very tried and tested formula. Problem is Kojima Productions need to distamnce themselves from Konami in order to grow.

Sure, I'd love to see more ZoE, Snatcher etc, but I'd rather see him break Konami's development straight jacket and produce something fresh. They seem to have lost their edge and not really want to take any risks Not because of the current economic climate, Konami have been this way for ages).

Konami should be digging into their back catalogue to remix some of their true classics for the 21st century, like Sunset Riders or Lucky and Wild, but after the whole Guitar Hero biz and them missing the boat (before their upcoming arcade , I won't hold my breath on them acting.

Zone of the Enders 3 Kojima... I want it. You want it. We all want it.

Anyone who doesn't want it is the reincarnation of Hitler and shall be burned at the stake.

Ohh and one more thing... Get Konami to FUCKING REPRINT ZOE2 while you're at it. It's 130 fucking dollars (Last time I checked).

This is great news, however why copy western game formulas? I mean if other Japanese developers do this wheres the diversity? I think its safe to say that if metal gear solid was made by a western developer it would be really different. No crazy and insane memorable boss characters and obviously not the same immature humour that kojima often provides. But I hope all the best for him because Im a huge Kojima fan.

MGS4 was pretty western.

ZOE3 better be their main focus!

I like that Kojima-san is trying to apeal to westerners, and I have doubt that he won't succeed. But I don't think he should try to go after the "hollywood" scene. The Metal Gear series is always compared to movies, but in reality they can't be any more different(debatable?). We have plenty of these types of games, so I would rather him try something new. Although I'd eat up pretty much anything he throws at me.

I don't know, Kojima-san... Will your new games be similar to Zone of the Enders? I didn't like that game.
