Kojima had no plans to be involved with Metal Gear photo

You know what is annoying? When you're walking along minding your own business and then BAM!, you're suddenly designing two new Metal Gear Solid games when you said you wouldn't be doing anymore MGS games because you wanted to focus on other stuff. Happens all the time and it's a pain in the butt. The most recent person to suffer this fate was Kojima himself as after declaring MGS4 to be the final MGS game he would work on he came out on stage at E3 and told everyone he was actually working on two new ones (we won't count MGS Arcade).

How did this happen? Well it isn't Kojima's fault; he wasn't planning on any of this. The designer says that, "At first, I was just going to create the overall guidelines and concepts for [MGS: Peace Walker], and leave it in the hands my excellent staff," says Kojima. "I was going to have a hand in the project as a producer, and make titles other than MGS. But, I set the game in the South American country of Costa Rica and created a story with themes about nuclear deterrence and the cold war. It looked as if it might be very confusing to young people, because of generational differences. So, in the end I finally said, 'I'll do it.'" If an MGS game is not confusing with Kojima at the helm, I'd hate to see the twist and turns of one without him.

So that seems reasonable. You can accidentally start working on one game you said you wouldn't, but how do you fall into two games? It could only happen if the other MGS game was nothing like previous MGS games. "It's a completely different kind of action than what has appeared in the series so far," Kojima said of MGS: Rising. "I'll be working more deeply on the project than a normal producer."

There you have it. Two games that Kojima planned to have nothing to do with, he is now pretty heavily involved with. I can't help but feel that Konami might have pushed in in this direction just a bit too. Not so good to lose your rock star lead developer.

He's been planning to not have any involvement in the series since after MGS2. Sorry Kojima, but you're married/handcuffed to the series and don't try and act like you don't like it!

If he isn't enjoying himself, oh well. If he has to suffer to make us all become emotional wrecks at the end of his games due to their sublimeness, then IT IS ONE MAN FOR MILLIONS.

He gives his life, not for hono(u)r, but for us.

@Naim Master

Thanks for spoiling MGS4 for ME! =(
Hahah, just kidding, i gotta admit, Kojima's conspiration phobia is a little bit over the top in MGS4, but that doesn't make the game any less awesome.

I could swear an undercurrent of MGS4 was THIS IS THE LAST. But shit happens.
Dudes gonna have "He made Metal Gear" on his fucking tombstone.
But how awesome would that be?

I knew it was Konami pulling the strings. When Kojima left to set up Kojima Productions, he was doing so to push his own ideas. However, I think Konami realised too late, what they were losing in Kojima.

Lets face it, Konami have no figurehead that the press love than him. Kojima is an industry darling, respected buy gamers and press. Just who else would step up to speak for Konami?

This kind of thing has me worried about Konami. Those that run the company are playing it far too safe in todays market, that very few to no fresh IP are being created by them. I'd hate for Konami to become a one hit pony like Koei, who jim seems to love, despite their dire output of DW after DW game.

Too much reliance on MGS/DDR/Pro coud be their undoing. However, the light on the horizon is the morning star of Castlevania Lord of Shadow. It looks fab and I pray it does well for them. I hope we will see some new rising stars from that game.

True. Konami has churned out a lot of shit non-DS games in recent years that Kojima hasn't helmed (Nanobreaker, LOL). Now, I'm a big fan of Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, but I can also admit that it wasn't very good. I can't wait for Kojima to re-vitalize the series. But what happens when he retires/gets burned out? Konami will be in trouble.

Kijima will be old and full with wrinkles and he will still be making MGS games, he loves doing them and we love playing them - that's that!

I just hate for him to be known as 'The Metal Gear guy'... he *did* do other games since MG1, y'know. (I'd like to see him take a world like in Policenauts or Snatcher and give *that* the MGS4 treatment... something like that would be epic, I think. (perhaps not a sequel/remake to either, but something in the vein of one of those games.)

If MGS:Rising is basically ZOE meets MGS universe in terms of action then I'll be a very happy camper. I am sure despite having other ideas and wanting to execute them he still has plenty of fun with MGS titles.

I remember back when he made MGS3 and said it that was it, his last MGS game, dude received death threats if he didn't continue. Crazy stuff, some fans are way to obsessive.

At the risk of typing a throwaway comment: classy choice! I'm glad there are people out there who still enjoy, and recognize MGS1: personally, I think it's the best in the series (but not my favorite).

I'd suggest going out and getting Twin Snakes, and a GCN on the cheap.

Ya know, I have the feeling that he's making it seem like he is more involved with Rising that I feel he actually is to try and build more hype for it. At least, that's the feeling I get.

While I agree that Kojima is definitely the man for the MGS job, it sucks that until he makes another blockbuster game he will be forever known as the "MGS" guy, much in the same way that Bungie is only really known for making Halo, despite making great games before that. And, like Kojima, both are stuck making sequels and spin-offs to a franchise that they both have stated they would like to stop working on to move on to bigger things. While I'm certainly happy that he's making an MGS game for the 360 (Unfortunately, I have no PS3), it sucks that he's still making these games even though he wants to move on. Still, at least he's making the best of it by not allowing the series to go to shit.

Costa Rica isn't in South America. It's a Central American country. Get a fucking map, Kojima.

Hideo Kojima its a f**king liar, he was planning the whole two upcoming games since he did mgs4. if you dont believe me, back in mgs4 when you speak to naomi before the battle with laughing octopus, in the screen appear all of the metal gear solid games including two extra slots that say "under construction".

Kojima has said something along the lines of "This is the last Metal Gear game I'm working on" ever since Metal Gear Solid 2.
