Kojima expresses disappointment in Metal Gear Solid 4 photo

In an odd showing of brutal honesty within the gaming industry, Kojima recently told UK's Edge magazine that he is not 100 percent pleased with the way Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots came out, pointing at some of the PS3's capabilities as part of the problem. From the interview:

"Game-wise, it's pretty close to the original vision: you sneak into the battlefield and can choose whether to do a stealth game or interfere with the battle more directly. But the graphic, side things like motion-blending and the size of the map, totally was not accomplished to my original vision -- to my satisfaction."

You can take this one of two ways: that Kojima is a perfectionist (and as most geniuses tend to be, extremely harsh about his or her own work), or you can go running down the street wailing at the top of your lungs that Kojima hates the PS3, banging pots together for dramatic effect and essentially blowing all this out of proportion. It's your call, although I guarantee you that the latter will keep you out of the better discussions that may be had about the topic.

A bit more from the interview:

"When we first showed the game engine at TGS, the staff were really proud and happy. PS3 was a dream machine, y'know, and we were going to work on this and that -- and we had so many ideas. But when we actually started developing the game, we realized there were a lot of restrictions and so it turned out how you see it today. The original vision was to go ten steps further, the reality was just one step, which isn't to say we didn't progress."

I have to say this piques my interest, if only because the Metal Gear Solid series has held such high standards of quality and produced such memorable gaming experiences. I do appreciate Kojima's incredible integrity in voicing these concerns, as I can imagine the PR department behind MGS 4 are weeping into their keyboards right about now. Most gamers will likely still adore the game and may never have been privy to this were it not for Kojima's candid words. Of course, the Japanese are known for having ridiculously high standards, so it's hard to know how to measure comments like this anyway. 20-hour work days, anyone?

Hey, you made the damn thing.

...I suddenly imagine Kojima looking in the toilet and shaking his head. "...This is unacceptable. I could've done better."

This game will be ported to the 360 later on. Just like MGS2 for the Xbox. Microsoft has been on the lookout for this game since it was announced... so yeah. And maybe they could add some more stuff to the game, knowing that making games for the 360 is easier. And no one can tell me that the PS3 has more graphic power than the 360... have a 32" sharp 1080p, xbox 360, a ps3, fight night for both, fifa, and have tried rainbow six vegas, need for speed games, and others... they all look better (more detailed) on the 360. The only game so far that seems to look/perform a lil bit better is oblivion. But again it wasn't released at the same time.

That said, you still get more for your buck when you buy a PS3, hardware wise...

I know I'm kind of out of topic, but I always meet whining dickheads, online and off. Even the "Geeks" and "Nerds" overlook the fact of hardware and software for both systems and say stupid things. I couldn't hate mindless fanboys anymore than I do rightnow. Fuck you guys!!!! (yet i love you)

All system go, fucking damnit!

The original trailer wasn't very good at all. The lighting was really good though. The textures and everything else looks much worse than the recent stuff.

The fact people still think this will come out the 360 blows my mind. If it does, it will be the worst version, just liek MGS2 was for the Xbox. I don't want hold down 3 buttons to not shoot my gun.

How did this wonderully written post turn into some sort of fanboy flamewar? You guys need to examine your priorities a bit more, I think.

Jesus.

I'll wait for MGS4: Subs of the Patriots to hit. It'll have all the extra content AND a bargain price.

interesting - he executed the Molyneux gambit before the fanboy bitching, instead of after. An intriguing tactic, good sir knight.

Hmm, perhaps a case of the "damn, there sure are a lot of impressive games out there, perhaps I should start to lower everybody's expectations..."

"I think that's the same vision he had when he bought that shirt."

"What a 360 fanboy."

Takeshi and TPJesus, you sirs are hilarious. Not everyone has the luxury of being a Stanley Kubrick or Gustav Mahler where they will even continue to edit their works after they have already been published.

Yes I'm sure the 360 would have delivered the game on a golden platter garnished with one-million-dollar checks carried by some smoking-hot babe. Since the PS3 OBVIVOUSLY fails and is inferior to the 360.
What's that? They're pretty much at the same level? Oh...

Size of the maps? That's entirely memory dependent, and 512MB of total memory is a lot to work with, no matter how it's split up at the architecture level.

Do these developers expect consumers to spend $600 for a mini supercomputer just to play games, or what?

"I'm sure visions are always grand, but there is the limitations of reality.'

"Obsessive game designer has obsessive, and unrealistic expectations of what he wants, versus what he could accomplish."

Exactly. Kojima is batshit crazy, so it's fair to assume his visions are probably impossible to realise in actuality.

Also, give it a rest about a 360 port. It won't happen. MGS ports ended with MGS 2.

Wow, I'm really shocked Colette didn't post the entire article up here. It seems a little fanboi-ish and sad on her part. She left out a good amount of details.

It may just be me, but this site lately seems really hell bent on its beloved 360, and shows hate towards most everything else.

Sounds like Kojima is less disappointed with MGS4 or the PS3 specifically than with the grand promises of "next-gen" gaming, which have largely failed to materialize.

The best games I've played this generation (excluding Wii and DS games) have been Bioshock and Portal, and the things that made these games great are truly, emphatically "last-gen": art direction and writing.

It bears repeating: hardware does not make the game.

With any luck, this means he'll give up on Metal Gear Solid all together, and spend all his time on Boktai.

lol Whats wrong with having more than one disc? Lost Odyssey has 4 dvds as well Final Fantasy VII had 4 cds and they were pretty good games! They don't have to be on one dvd/blue ray/disc to be any good just the content matters lol odd.

I got ready to defend him from the word "pretension"

But then I realized i'm the same way with my artwork, hahah.

Well I can't blame him, for wanting right now what the PS3 graphics will probably look like in three or four years.
