Koei Tecmo thinks Fist of the North Star will be huge photo

There's no denying that Koei Tecmo's Fist of the North Star/Dynasty Warriors mash up has already turned heads. The popular Manga is known to millions of people, far more than the ancient Chinese history upon which Dynasty Warriors is based. Armed with this supremely huge license, the Japanese publisher believes that the game will generate mad bank.

"Only in Japan, the game should sell a million copies," boasts company boss Kenji Matsubara. So far, the game has not been confirmed for an international release, and Koei isn't telling me anything yet, but given the worldwide popularity of the Manga, there's no way this game is staying in Japan.

I really hope it works out for them. As a long time Koei supporter, it's great to see the company get its hands on something more mainstream, and given the visual quality of the screens and video released thus far, I'd say that the company is putting all its effort into this one. Koei is capable of putting out awesome things when it tries (Gitaroo Man, Kessen, even Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce was terrific in theory) when it does its best, so here's hoping they take this ball and run with it.

Also, ATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATA!

If they brought this stateside I would be pretty tempted to pick it up even though I've never touched the Dynasty Warriors series. It's too bad nobody ever brought Arc System Works Fist of the North Star over.

Well if it gets marketing toward the same crowd as dynasty warriors at least worldwide it will sell decently well. And heck fans of the manga or anime might pick it up, because that's how we roll. It also looks really spectacular for a brawler/ one vs army style game.

and now I'm going to go explode people with my fingers.

It has been said before, this combination is brilliant. I can't wait for this bit of ultra violence to be banned in Germany and censored to Hello Kitty standards in Australia.

LOL. I hope EA are watching this game. Why??

Didn't a chap from EA recently say that they were not going to launch Brutal Legend, and even Dead Space in japan, because of lame excuses about dismemberment, gore and such.

Well, hey, Fist of the North Star is all about that kind of thing. There seems to be some kind of double standards going.

Back on Fist, it will sell, especially if it stick close to the manga. Can't wait to play as Rei, slicing foes up with the power of geometry. It think will be huge, but TK really have to sell it to gamer who might miss it.

I want to see the Fist of the North Star animated movie packaged with the game, or better yet a volume of the manga, so people know where this is coming from. If you guys can push the game on this kind of front, it may do better. I want you guys to really sell this game, so show us how cool it is.

Dear KT, take a hint from Brutal Legend. Small bits of inventive promotion like interviews etc, also give us a reason to buy into a game. Get some interviews with Tetsuo Hara and Buronson online, and tell us more about the series, show us some art etc. It all does its part.

Gundam is known by millions as well and Musou Gundam didn't sell like hot cakes in the west.

I actually think this will sell slightly more just based on the approach they are taking with it. but instant hit I'm not too sure of yet....

What this game needs to be is a balance between Godhand and Dynasty Warriors, by which I mean having the intricacies of the former's combat and the latters multitude of goons to slap about.

@Crimsondramon
you beat to it.:)

I'm hoping it will be the next God Hand. But that's just me. I'm kind of turned off by the Dynasty Warriors reference *cringes away from Jim's anger*

Yeah, Gundam is popular in the west with lots of young fans, but there have been plenty of Gundam games over the years, on PS1, PS2, GC, PSP etc. Gundam is a show that now especially focuses on pretty boy andro characters, when it used to have more adult characters. Sign of the times. DW Gundam may have sold bad because of its Gundam fighting focus, and less about the pretty boys the girly crowd like.

Hokuto No Ken is different, as its more of an adult 'gekiga' property, that's very graphic and full of Mad Max style machismo, being a child of the 80's and all. Plenty of crazy goings on within, so stay away if you have a weak heart.

@Toiletduck

God Hand was also missed by many because of lack of advertising, and timing in the PS2s life cycle. Once again, its all about active promotion of your game. Get creative and it will pay off.

@Nicojay2: I really wish that'll be the case. But from the videos it seems like MUCH more of the latter, unfortunately. Not to say it can't be mind-numbingly fun.

@Nicojay2: Good Tao, that would be perfect. I'm enjoying the fact that there aren't 56 bajilions of enemy on screen while you use a 5 meter sword. Maybe they can make something decent out of this.

One problem I feel is that one of a japanese development bubble, where it seems somehow a crime to try an idea that another game uses. My greatest fear, is that KT will ignore the advances in these kinds of games over the last few years (God of War, God Hand, Batman, Brutal Legend etc), and still tread the DW line.

I agree Springsteen, beyond the cool action, the videos don't inspire me much after countless DW games. This game needs some other USP elements to make it spicy special.

Koei, what makes this any different from previous DW games? I applaud you guys getting the Fist license, but to simply settle for DW in FotNS clothing, would not be cool enough. I really hope I'm wrong, as I want this game to be as awesome as possible. Feel free to come and chat with us on Dtoid, and discuss more about the game.

I think this would be huge oustide of Japan too. All they need to do is make the cover a picture of Kenshiro making some dude explode like he likes to do and I think it'll be an insta-hit for those who aren't as familiar with Fist Of The North Star.

Technically, Fist of the North Star is a manga that ran in the teenager-aimed manga publication Shonen Jump, but cosndering the amount of violence that the series has, there's no reason it won't appeal to all sorts of kung fu fanboys and gorehounds...

@sparkthatbled Technically I don't think anyone on this side of the hemisphere ever seen that manga. Now the TV series, oh ya, that was the shit.
