Knytt - freeware gaming bliss photo

Pictured left: some of the best adventures and level designs in gaming history.  Pictured on the right: a new game you're never played before, inspired by them. How's that for a hard sell?

Before storming off to the office this morning I found myself lost in a 160 screen 2D freeware adventure called Knytt, an amazing little platformer who's simple exploratory gameplay and soothing music sucked me in instantly. The plot is typical -- you're been kidnapped and need to find your way home, but the gameplay and scale of things is quite unlike anything on the shelves. This may also remind you of the game Within A Deep Forest. Same dude.

Don't be fooled by the 16 bit simplicity -- this game will keep you busy for hours with it's intricate tunnels and Metroid-style exploration (you must find certain items to go deeper into the map).  Selectbutton has dubbed this game Icebergvania -- a game that packs so much hidden content that you'll spent an eternity trying to uncover it all. Here's a video of me not playing it very well at all so you can get a taste. For a better video, find the hang glider.

Thank you! I think I found my new addiction, well atleast for the next week.

Amazing, love the 16 bit style too.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what "Soothing Music"?

Thanks for posting this. It's hard to sort out the crap from the good stuff as far as finding good games to play from the internet.

I enjoyed Knytt. It was short, but sweet.

I'm down with the sickness. Just killed my last hour at work on this. Whee. Can't wait to play more. Next Gen can go bit it.

Not sure if I am doing this right or not...

Just downloaded the game about an hour ago, and I already beat it... from what I gather you are just getting parts of your spaceship put back together. The items don't do anything for your character. And at the end *SPOILERS* you just fly back to the beginning. Now, is it a bad game? Not if I just spent the last hour doing a first time speed run through it. It kept me entertained...

I just don't see where you are getting this 'eternity to uncover' everything in the game...

Ok, after doing some digging around I realized that the main part of the game, finding the parts of the ship, isn't really what it's about...

Sorry, after just beating Zelda:TP I was in a linear mode when I started this :)

Not again, a great Windows-only game (still hate how Cave Story is Windows only...)! My Mac and Linux systems cry in dissatisfaction!

I'll have Windows on my desktop computer soon, so all is not lost, at least if they never port it to any other operating system. Which, you know, would totally suck, at least for me.

Bookmarked, I'll have to give this a whirl later on down the road.

Niero, thanks for exposing me to this game.

It seems like such a small thing, but that wiiiiiidescreen aspect ratio is tear-inducingly glorious. Exploring around for the first time was a rare, captivating experience.
