Kingdoms of Amalur gets special GameStop midnight release photo

Regardless of how you feel about GameStop, you have to admit they have some pretty great promotions and incentives, like what they're doing for the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning midnight release. Three different stores will have special guests to help fans celebrate the new release.

In Bellingham, MA, Curt Schilling, Founder and Chairman of 38 Studios and R.A. Salvatore will be stopping by, while Todd McFarlane will be in Tempe, AZ. Finally, in  Cockeysville, MD, Ken Rolston of Big Huge Games will be saying hello.

Since most cities have more than one GameStop, be sure to call in and check which store will be hosting these big names. If this isn't an amazing reason to go buy a game, I don't know what is. Go forth, and meet cool people!

I think I kinda want this game, which is shocking.

I'd love to meet Bob. My *only* reservation about this game is the amount of glitches in the demo. I love its flexibility and ambition!

Forget Amalur, I'm gonna pick up resident evil revelations (even though I've got both preordered). 8)

The demo totally sold me on this. It had bugs, sure, but it was damn fun. It'll be great to have a big open-world RPG that is actually fun to play at a mechanical level.

Nope, I'd gladly wait a few hours to not support gamestop.

That's pretty badass. Nice to see developers trying to garnet good will directly with gamers instead of staying at arms length. It's pretty refreshing. I already got this paid off, just gotta wait for it to come out, and then I'm all over it like white on rice.

I heard about the game and preordered it. Read about it more in depth and canceled it. Played the demo and now I'm not sure.

I'll wait till the reviews.

The demo really turned me off, it felt like a generic PS2 action rpg.

It's kinda cute how they keep pretending this is a major release.

Oh, I get it. It's not a major release because it's a new IP, right?

Its going to be a great game. Anyone who liked PSO/ PSU will be right at home.

I guess we'll see! I thought the utter mediocrity and boring generic design of the game would have disqualified it from being considered interesting. Plus the fact I've never heard anyone in the real world mention it is generally not an indicator of a major release.

Yeah, the demo totally turned me off too. Too simplistic and generic for my tastes. Astounding this is getting a midnight release.

As with all new IPs, it takes time to grow.

Of course, I know for a fact people ARE buzzing about it, as that is how I found out about the game in the first place.

Also, how is the game generic? All RPGs are somewhat formulaic. If a new RPG does not follow certain rules many people get angry about it, so of course it will have some generic traits. I suggest you go read up on the game, as it does a TON of things that other RPGs have not done.

Well, the game may not be your cup of tea, but many of the previews I have read have been laying on the praise. For example, this is from the IGN "Review in Progress" of the game:

" It's arcadey, to be sure, but when you compare it to the three popular fantasy RPGs of our time -- Skyrim, Dark Souls and Dragon Age -- Reckoning easily outclasses all of them in the gameplay department. The competition isn't even remotely close in any respect. "

I'm not saying the game is for everyone, but enough people are impressed with the game that I would argue it MORE than warrants a midnight launch.

While I initially was turned off by the demo for a multitude of reasons, I found it hard to dismiss it outright. So today I gave the demo a second chance and now I'm pretty much sold on this game! The controls felt clunky at first but I'm used to it now, I've grown to like the WOW-ish graphics and the story/world seems like it could be interesting enough. The only thing that bugs me is the camera which is just very awkward to work with and quite awful in battle. Also the interface is just 'meh'.

Yes it's quite streamlined, but the Destiny-system is cool and the combat works great (apart from the camera-issues). I just might pick this one up.

How is this the first I've heard of this game ? Definitely checking out the demo. Still didn't know gamestop would do a midnight release for something other than COD or Madden.

Oh by the way, I played both the PC and Xbox 360 version and what I really like is how incredibly smooth the UI switched between PC and Xbox-controller controls. Like if you press a button on your keyboard or move the mouse, the interface instantly switches back to the PC overlay with all the correct button-labels, etc and back to the Xbox-overlay again once you pick up the controller again. It's a nice touch.

I'll wait for my cheaper Toys R Us preorder to ship, considering I don't feel like driving the 6 hours or so it would be to Tempe. It is a nice incentive and I do enjoy worthwhile midnight releases, but yeah. I hope this game does well, the demo didn't give me all the bugs people lament about but it did get me interested in a game I wasn't paying much attention to.

I preordered RE Revelations at GameStop simply because Amazon wouldn't hook me up with that kickass case, but I'm buying Amalur at Amazon.
But still, this is a pretty badass event.

Middle of freaking nowhere for MA.... If this was nearer Boston i'd consider picking it up there... instead i'll just wait and see what reviews this game gets and get it where ever its cheapest.

I've played the demo twice now and I'm yet to see a single bug... What I have seen is the most fluid and enjoyable combat in an RPG since ME2, with some seriously clever level up and customisation mechanics. And it's a new IP, with a great art asthetic. But I guess all the cool kids on Dtoid are over on the Syndicate demo comments bit crying about how there aren't any creative games anymore and good new IPs and that the game industry is DOOOOMED!

Pillocks. But if I was designing Amalur I'd have copied and pasted the same handful of basic quest outlines 300 times, made it boring to look at and buggy out of its ass, and make the combat a real chore. Y'know, like Skyrim. I'd have sold millions then =]

The demo was buggy for me but I enjoyed it. A solid Gamefly choice for me. I wouldn't mind meeting R.A. Salvatore but if I met Todd Mcfarlane I'd probably scream out "Spawn Boot!" then hit him in the head with a barrel.

The hype surrounding this game is silly. I must have played a different demo than the rest of you. Gameplay that outclasses Skyrim & Dark Souls? It is to laugh. Seems more like Fable to me.

Played the PS3 demo, and was turned off by how... mediocre and jagged everything appeared, even in the cinematics. twitchy controls and camera angles. PS2 era indeed. Very disappointed.

Followed it up with the PC demo and had a much better experience. Controller support sealed the deal for me.

Good on Gamestop, and if I were in the area I'd love to meet Salvatore so I can thank him for all the great stories over the years. Drizzt kept me company through a lot of bad times in my life.

Like I said before though, this game is really good as a first outing for 38, very solid and fun demo and I think if the game follows that through, it'll be something I'll pick up one day. But I don't totally think this game deserves a midnight launch party, its not really a phenomenon or anything, and if we do this for this game we mine as well do it for all games.

@Blake Stone: So I should base my opinion that there isn't much real world hype for this game not on my observations of people in the real world but rather my personal feelings? Look In know you have a reputation for being a bit slow in the head but seriously that's beyond simple stupidity. Only a true master of the craft could achieve what you have sir. Bravo.

@Pico - Blind Skyrim fanboys are... Well fuck, is there any other kind of Skyrim fanboy? And don't confuse fan, with fanboy. If you can say in a straight face that the core gameplay of Skyrim was anything other then a boring and uninspired mess then you have some essential things missing...
