King of Fighters XII's roster is well endowed, chock-full of flamboyant asians photo

SNK Playmore recently revealed the full cast of fighting characters in The King of Fighters XII on their official website. In the above picture, you’ll notice that the cast is bunch of semi-happy looking dudes and dudettes.  How these characters muster up the will to fight each other is beyond my understanding.

It’s slated for a Japanese arcade release in April this year, with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions shortly thereafter. The U.S. and European releases are being handled by Ignition Entertainment and are slated to hit at some point this year as well.

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to learn how to play a fighting game. I haven’t enlisted a sensei yet (I hear that Gerstmann fellow is pretty good) but I’m currently making progress in Super Street Fighter Turbo Remix HD Really Long Name II. I still haven’t gotten past the fourth fight on the Easy tier, but I did defeat Cammy the other night. That screwdriver thing she does is ridiculous.

I just dove head first into fighting games. I'm so glad to hear a KOF is coming to the 360. Further justifies the SFIV arcade stick.

NO MAI !!! And also , I got pissed off at the KoF franchise , they change your character in EVERY FREAKIN GAME , but not subtle changes like in SF , they just remove all of you character special moves and even normal moves and make a new char all together (looking at Robert) ...

I'M GONNA TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE.

Also, I'll teach you how to play fighting games if you want Brad, but only if you don't beat me up in real life.

Heh, there's already been a fair amount of bellyaching about the roster within the community...not entirely unwarranted, but it'll get bigger when they can use recycled versions of the new sprites for the next few entries. Which will in itself lead to more bellyaching.

Large roster? This is actually a rather small roster compared to most of the past King of the Fighter games. Might be the smallest roster for the series yet.

Geese is dead and has been for a long time.

My team of Terry, Joe and Iori are all there so I'm in. This game looks amazing and, if it's as good as XI, will play superbly.

Yeah, this roster is TINY, and very Shoto heavy. I wish there were more grapplers. Where the hell are Vice (my fav), Goro, and Tizoc? And I really miss Mai. Her dive was and awesome move.

Umm, large? are you kidding? This is the smallest KOF lineup Ive seen in a long while. Anyway, Im rather disappointed with this list since Vice was one of my favorites her grapple style is awesome. I also miss Whip, and Yamazaki...

The damage isnt that bad though, I see Kensou, Athena, and Leona are there so that will be my new team. Cant wait to play this!

I don't get it. When the roster for MKvDC was revealed, everyone complained that it was too small and it had 22 characters. KOF12 has 2 less than what MKvDC had, so why is this considered a "large" roster?
Mister Disco's Avatar - Comment posted on 01/01/2009 21:30

It's considered "large" because Brad has clearly never seen a KOF game let alone played one. Why couldn't we get someone to cover KOF who actually knows a thing about fighting games?

Oh wow, Goro is in this game. But I'm still baffled as to why no Mai. That's like a Street Fighter game with no Chun Li.

And what's with the disco outfits? Iori and Ash have some explaining to do.

This game looks cool and I will bag it for my fighting genes. However, SNK have a lot to learn from Capcom by miles.

KoF series is cool, but I feel over saturation with yearly updates has destroyed its mystique. After many years its very easy to ignore it for many other games.

My advice to SNK is to give this series a break after this game, and come back with something new. It does seem a lot of the time that SNK seem fit to play second fiddle to Capcom. This is a real shame, because they are very talented and I know they can give us something more.

I'll look forward to the 360 version, but come on SNK, please try something new for us. Perhaps this game proves the point, that some japanese developers are having trouble with getting to grips with 3D (only one PS2 KoF game was previously 3D). With 360 and PS3, why is KoFXII not in full 3D? Maybe I'm being fickle gamer, as its also nice to have KoF, in an age where 3D rules the industry.

Brad, you kinda started with the wrong fighting game.. Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is by far the hardest fighting game in history.. even on easy mode! It's ridiculous and I've played fighting games for years. You should start with Marvel vs Capcom. Now that's a game you can't forget.

Goddamn fucking Raiden, why him why why why?!?! Also, why no woman's team? I'll miss King and Yuri.

@Cowboy TTop
Unless you're lobbing in the Maximum Impact series with the regular KOF series, I'd hardly call them yearly updates. Capcom just repackages an Alpha, III, or SF2 game every so often(not that I'm complaining). SNK brings out genuinely new characters with varying playstyles. They put alot more effort into their fighting games instead of using the same sprites over and over. As for 2d, it's a style. Maybe someday SNK will have the Maximum Impact series on the same level as Street Fighter 4 but until then they can have highly detailed drawn characters that rival Guilty Gear and BlazBlue.

Well, Kensou, Terry, Shen Woo, and Clark are all there, so at least I'll have a team.

Yuri being gone is unforgivable, though. I mean, how the shit did Raiden make the cut but not Yuri? If they wanted to bring back an old character so badly, why not somebody actually cool, like Jhun? Disappointing, but I'll probably buy the game anyway.

As a game, this looks good.

As a KOF, this looks awful.

First of all, the artwork, for reasons unknown, DON'T look like it belongs in the KOF franchise. I mean, they all have really square faces and the bodies are alot bigger than in previous games. IE: Look at Ralph, he look's twice as big as he usually does. Also, both he and Clark suddenly look like....they got a really really bad tan? Or maybe SNK decided to make them African American all of a sudden. And Athena looks like a little girl now with FATASS thighs. Not Chun-Li SFIV man thighs, just fat thighs.

Second of all, small, I mean REALLY small roster. This is smaller than 94/96. Both were siginificantly small. But this is ludicrous small. 20 characters is NOT KOF material. It's something Street Fighter could get away with, not this.

Thirdly, they got rid of alot of classic characters. IE: Mai, King, Shingo, Yuri, Takuma, CHANG AND CHO. But then again, who's counting?

Fourth, they added Raiden. RAIDEN! Need I say more?

Fifth, they made Kensou look like a....woman? To be honest, when I first saw the picture of the roster I thot kensou was Yuri. Yeah.

Sixth, the "teams" don't really make sense. I mean sure, you have some classic teams like Terry, Andy and Joe. Or Kyo, Benimaru, and Daemon. But what about Iori? Where does he go? Or Kim? Is Raiden the replacement for Chang? And okay, you have Robert and Kyo, who's the third member? Doesn't make a lick of sense.

I'm going to wait and see how it plays before I make judgments about the game. The ingame art looks great, albeit a different style than previous KOF's.

I think it's looking really great. The only characters that I'm going to miss are Shingo, Yuri, Takuma and Geese. I understand Geese not being in it seeing as how KOFXII isn't a dream match, so I don't really hold that against them.

However, even though there are only twenty characters, I'm still having trouble deciding on which three I'm going to pick for my team. I've gotta have Kim-- Kim is my anchor. But then there's also Terry, Andy, Raiden, Ralf, Clark, Leona, Kensou, Daimon, Shen... God damn, they're all too good. Finding my perfect team in '98 Ultimate Match took me damn well forever.

Well, I'm glad they updated the art. This makes my favorite fighting game look even better. Yeah, I'll miss Mai, King, and the other ladies, but I think I could live now that they brought Andy back.

Speaking of Andy, why on his profile pic his head his HUUUUUUGE!!! I mean, really guys... that shit is big.

But yeah, as long as SNK can keep with the epic storylines and making each character feel like they got "the hero of this game" potential like they've done 90% of the time thus far, I'll excuse the small roster.

Really, this is my fav fighting game above all else out even today because they have storylines that can each be their own RPG.
